Langerhans cell histiocytosis: impact on the permanent dentition after an 8-year follow-up.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disorder which mainly affects children. Oral changes, such as gingival ulceration, halitosis, osseous lesions associated with tooth mobility, and early loss of primary teeth, comprise the disease's first manifestations for most patients. In the long term, dental changes may occur as a result of dental and systemic treatment. Therefore, this study's purpose is to report Langerhans cell histiocytosis' effects on the permanent dentition 8 years after diagnosis, which had been established by performing a biopsy of gingival tissue on a 3-year-old patien…

Longitudinal occlusal changes from primary to permanent dentition in children with normal primary occlusion.

This purpose of this research was to examine the stability of normal occlusion during the transition from primary to permanent dentition. The sample consisted of 128 children (83 boys and 45 girls) 4.5 to 5.5 years old with normal occlusion in the primary dentition. The subjects were reexamined at 12.5 to 13.5 years. None had received orthodontic treatment. Although all the subjects had normal occlusion in the primary dentition, 72.7% (73.5% boys and 71.1% girls) had developed anomalies following eruption of the permanent teeth. These anomalies included crowding, Class II Division 1 or Class I…

Comparative analysis of the dental plaque metabolome in tooth stain and caries within primary dentition.

BACKGROUND: Dental black tooth stain (BTS) has been epidemiologically associated with a lower prevalence of dental caries, yet the underlying metabolic mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study aimed to characterize the metabolic profiles of dental plaque to explore the association between tooth stain and low caries risk. METHODS: Dental plaque samples were collected from three groups of children: caries-free with BTS (CF-BTS), caries-free without BTS (CF), and severe early childhood caries without BTS (SECC). Metabolomic profiling was performed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass s

AI-Based Intraoral Videography for Automated Dental Inspection and Charting in Children With Mixed Dentition.

Examination and documentation (charting) of teeth are indispensable yet labor-intensive processes, especially in pediatric patients, where mixed dentition, anatomical variability, and limited cooperation during imaging present unique challenges. Despite their distinguished potential, existing AI models lack applicability to pediatric dentistry because they are mostly designed for adult dentition and use radiographic images. To fill this gap, we developed an AI-powered model for automated pediatric dental charting using real-time intraoral videos, utilizing a YOLO-based object detection framewo…

Cleidocranial Dysplasia Presenting With Mixed Dentition in a 28-Year-Old Male: A Case Report.

Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is an inherited development anomaly of the skeletal system that is also classified as an autosomal dominant genetic disorder. This is due to a gene mutation on chromosome 6p21 that encodes core binding factor activity a-1 (CBFA1), a member of runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) found on the short arm of chromosome 6. CCD is a scarce condition and its occurrence is about one per million births. It primarily affects bones that are derived from both endochondral and intramembranous ossification. It is identified by certain clinical and radiological features i

Non-syndromic Bilateral Supernumerary Teeth in the Primary and Secondary Dentition: A Rare Case Report.

Supernumerary teeth are presented in any region of the dental arches as additional teeth to the standard set of teeth and may present in either the primary or secondary dentition. They can be found as single or multiple teeth on one or both sides of the dental arches, with a preference for the premaxilla. The supernumerary teeth might cause aesthetic and/or functional problems, mainly if situated in the maxillary anterior region. Multiple supernumerary teeth are often related to specific conditions or in syndromic patients, i.e., cleft palate, cleft lip, cleidocranial dysplasia, and Gardner's …
