The present study investigated clinical, cardiovascular and neuroendocrine consequences of rapid opioid detoxification (ROD) in heroin-dependent individuals, affected, or not, by comorbid antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). Thirty-two patients underwent ROD and subsequent treatment with daily naltrexone: 3 days detoxification procedures were performed utilizing clonidine, baclofen, oxazepam and ketoprofene, without anaesthesia. Withdrawal symptoms, mood changes, cardiovascular indexes (heart rate, blood pressure), norepinephrine (NE), epinephrine (EPI), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) a

OBJECTIVE: Substance use disorders (SUDs) are associated with risk of psychiatric comorbidities, with inconsistent sex differences across studies. The objective of this study was to determine odds of psychiatric comorbidities based on sex in persons with a primary diagnosis of opioid, alcohol, or cannabis dependence, using a national clinical dataset.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of data from state-funded and state-run mental health programs in 2022 (Mental Health Client-Level Data, from the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration). Data were obtained from

With few exceptions, published studies fail to indicate that the DSM-III personality disorders can be distinguished from each other with respect to etiology, prognosis, treatment response, or family history. The Structured Interview for the DSM-III Personality Disorders (SIDP) was developed to improve axis II diagnostic reliability, and hence allow validity testing of axis II. Sixty-three subjects were independently rated by two interviewers using the SIDP. The kappa coefficients for interrater agreement reached .70 or higher for histrionic, borderline, and dependent personalities. While it is

This study explored suicidality among 190 (68% male) participants in an HIV mental health clinic. Twenty-six percent had suicidal thoughts within 30 days of admission, 49% had a plan, and 48% expressed intent stating there was moderate or high likelihood they would take action. The most prevalent diagnoses among those with suicidal ideation were major depression (64%), drug dependence (52%), and depressive personality disorder (50%). In regression analyses, individuals with major depression, dysthymia, substance abuse, thought disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and borderline and avoidan

Disruptions in fronto-limbic circuitry have been reported in adults with borderline personality disorder (BPD), yet it is unknown whether dynamic functional neurophysiology is similarly altered in adolescents with high levels of BPD traits. Using magnetoencephalography (MEG) and an implicit perception of emotional faces task, this study investigated task-dependent functional connectivity of eight a priori regions of interest implicated in emotional processing, in 16 females with and without BPD traits. An underconnected network of areas was observed in the BPD-trait group during implicit angry

The behavioral morbidity associated with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) includes symptoms of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), neurocognitive deficits, psychological problems, and possibly an increased chance of accidents. EDS is among the most frequently reported symptoms in patients diagnosed with OSA. The available data suggest that the primary cause of EDS is sleep fragmentation. The subjective measures of sleepiness include the sleep wake activity inventory and the epworth sleepiness scale. Sleepiness can also be evaluated objectively in the sleep laboratory using the multiple sleep late

School-aged children with newly diagnosed insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) were studied longitudinally in order to document how they adjusted to the medical illness and to assess salient background factors. The extent of life stress and the prevalence of psychiatric disorders that predated the IDDM were within normative ranges, and there was no characteristic preexisting "diabetic personality." The initial strain of living with IDDM elicited two general modes of coping. The prototypical and subdued reaction (seen in 64% of the children) consisted of mild sadness, anxiety, feeling of

Several lines of evidence suggest that a certain type of personality or temperament is at risk for developing neuropsychiatric diseases, and that brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) might be involved in pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric diseases such as mood disorders. Considering the role of BDNF and personality traits in the neuropsychiatric diseases, it is of interest to examine the association between BDNF gene polymorphism and personality test scores. In this study, we examined the association between 196 G/A the polymorphism in the coding region of the BDNF gene and personality tr

Twelve patients seen over a 8-year period with psychogenic spasms of the hand are reported. Six elderly patients presented with extrinsic flexion of the two or three medial fingers with sparing of the thumb and index. Six other patients had various hand attitudes following coincidental but not causal trauma to the upper extremity. Because of the differences in clinical presentation, age of patients and coincident trauma in some cases, the former patients were characterized as type I psychogenic spasms and the latter as type II. A major recurrent depression was the commonest psychiatric diagnos

A previously undescribed explanation for the development of duodenal ulcer is advanced. Stressful situations and avoidance-avoidance conflicts in individuals with a dependant compliant personality incapable of appropriate "stimulus-seeking behaviour" lead to an immobilised state. This predicament is denied. Helplessness develops. This state is associated with an autonomic imbalance in which a central monoamine depletion results in uncompensated parasympathetic overactivity which facilitates the development of duodenal ulceration. Denial often invalidates superficial psychological investigation

The 1960 Picture Identification Test (PIT) provides association scores for 210 need dyads derived from 21 Murray needs. Association scores for 16 clinical-control group pairs were analyzed for differences by t test. The clinical groups represented schizophrenic, neurotic, sex disturbance, and behavior disorder categories. Assertive needs produced the largest number od dyads which discriminated (p less than .05) clinical and control groups. Schizophrenic groups had the largest number of differences from normal controls. Schizophrenics tended to under-associate pairs of Assertive needs, as compa

Our objective was to evaluate the prevalence and temporal sequence of co-occurrence of anxiety disorders with opiate dependence in order to better define the relationship between these two disorders and to improve diagnosis and treatment. The search used Medline and Toxibase up to January 1, 2009, and was based on a systematic review method. Eighteen studies were found. Prevalence of anxiety disorders assessed by Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) criteria was high in opiate-dependent treated persons (lifetime prevalence ranged from 26% to 35%). BACKGROUND: Personality disorders show strong comorbidities with alcohol-use disorder (AUD), and several personality traits have been found to be more frequent in people with AUD. This study analyzes which personality facets of those proposed in the Alternative Model of Personality Disorder (AMPD) of DSM-5 are associated with the diagnostic criteria of AUD.
METHODS: The sample was composed of 742 participants randomly selected from the Spanish population, and 243 patients attending mental health services. All participants were of legal age and signed an informed consent form. The instruments

Despite the efficacy of methadone maintenance treatment (MMT), opioid dependence still involves severe impairment of functioning and low quality of life. This study examines the influence of the psychiatric comorbidity of MMT patients on their quality of life. A total of 193 middle-aged patients in long-term MMT were assessed for current and lifetime Axis I psychiatric disorders, substance use disorders, and personality disorders using the MINI, the CIDI-SAM, and the SIDP-IV. Quality of life (Qol) was assessed using the EQ-5D. Psychiatric comorbidity was documented in 78% of the patients. Mood

Stress is associated with poorer physical and mental health. To improve our understanding of this link, we performed genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of depressive symptoms and genome-wide by environment interaction studies (GWEIS) of depressive symptoms and stressful life events (SLE) in two UK population-based cohorts (Generation Scotland and UK Biobank). No SNP was individually significant in either GWAS, but gene-based tests identified six genes associated with depressive symptoms in UK Biobank (DCC, ACSS3, DRD2, STAG1, FOXP2 and KYNU; p < 2.77 × 10-6). Two SNPs with genome-wide sign

BACKGROUND: This study explored the relationship between personality attributes and substance use disorder (SUD). Research has identified specific personality dimensions, such as neuroticism, psychoticism, antisocial personality traits, paranoia, and anxiety, as contributing factors on the way to the initiation, continuation, and relapse of SUD.
PURPOSE: To explore this connection, we examined the personality profiles of subjects with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and opioid use disorder (OUD).
METHODS: A total of 928 subjects, 320 with AUD, 490 with OUD and 118 healthy controls (HC), in the ag
