Occupational Dermatoses Related to Personal Protective Equipment Used During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The recent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to the dramatic increase in use of personal protective equipment (PPE) among health care providers and the general public. Herein the authors discuss the various occupational dermatoses including allergic and irritant contact dermatitis, acne, seborrheic dermatitis, and rosacea related to frequent handwashing, disinfecting of surfaces, and prolonged wear of various PPE including face masks, gloves, and gowns. The authors provide an overview of published PPE-associated occupational dermatoses during the COVID-19 pandemic and also d

[Skin diseases and working disability in the Netherlands. II. Catamnestic study in 3 groups of patients with occupational contact eczema].

A follow-up study was performed of the medical and social condition of 164 patients with an occupational allergic contact dermatitis. A change of work did not always lead to an improvement of the dermatitis. A number of patients improved without changing their job. It is suggested that a change of occupation can only be advised to these patients if the causal allergen can be avoided completely by doing so and only by doing so; at the same time one must reckon with other aetiologic factors and the social situation after change of work. Moreover it is pointed out that patients who changed their

Cutting fluid dermatitis.

174 consecutive patients with suspected cutting fluid dermatitis were investigated in 2 occupational dermatology clinics. 43% showed allergic reactions which were thought to be relevant to their dermatitis. Irritant contact dermatitis occurred in 63%, but only in 21% was it thought to be the sole diagnosis. Biocides, especially formaldehyde releasers, were the commonest cause of allergic reactions in a cutting fluid patch test series.

Occupational skin diseases among dental nurses.

Out of 923 female dental nurses in the Helsinki district, 799 were interviewed using a computer-assisted telephone interview. A structured questionnaire was used to inquire about skin, respiratory symptoms, atopy, work history and methods, and exposure at work. The 328 nurses, who reported work-related dermatitis on their hands, forearms or face, were invited to an interview by an occupational physician; 245 nurses participated. 31 nurses had previously been diagnosed with an occupational skin disease (OSD). 133 nurses with a suspected OSD were selected for further clinical examinations with p

A study of occupational skin disease in the metal industry (1986-1990).

A retrospective study of the epidemiology of occupational skin disease among metal workers showed that irritant contact dermatitis (75%) prevailed over allergic contact dermatitis. Most workers belonged to the age group 20 to 29 years. There was a slight preponderance of Malays and Indians compared to the working population of Singapore. Most presented for treatment within 10 days of their dermatitis. Ninety-five percent presented with dermatitis on the hands and arms. There was no significant difference in the prevalence of atopy between workers with irritant and allergic contact dermatitis.

Allergic contact dermatitis from acrylic nails in a flamenco guitarist.

Acrylates are molecules that are well known for their strong sensitizing properties. Historically, many beauticians and individuals using store-bought artificial nail products have developed allergic contact dermatitis from acrylates. More recently, the use of acrylic nails among flamenco guitarists to strengthen their nails has become very popular. A 40-year-old non-atopic male patient working as a flamenco guitarist developed dystrophy, onycholysis and paronychia involving the first four nails of his right hand. The lesions were confined to the fingers where acrylic materials were used in or

Occupational skin hazards from synthetic plastics.

Epoxy and acrylic resins have numerous industrial applications but are also widely used in the household environment. These compounds are presently one of the most important sources of occupational contact dermatitis. Contact sensitization to epoxy resins is usually caused by the resin itself but hardeners or other additives, such as reactive diluents, plasticizers, fillers and pigments, can occasionally be responsible. Since completely cured epoxy resins are not sensitizers, epoxy resin sensitization is always due to the presence, in the final polymer, of uncured allergenic low molecular weig

Studies on contact dermatitis in stomatological staff.

84 patients with contact dermatitis (38 dentists, 18 dental nurses and 28 dental technicians) were studied. All were patch tested with standard patch test series of the CMEA countries and with some professional allergens. 31 (36.9%) of them had allergic occupational contact dermatitis and 39 (46.2%) had irrtiant contact dermatitis. The highest prevalence of irritant contact dermatitis was found among dental surgeons. The percentage of atopics in the group of patients with irritant contact dermatitis was twice greater compared to that in the group of patients with allergic contact dermatitis. T

The incidence of cutting fluid dermatitis among metalworkers in a metal fabrication factory: a prospective study.

We compared the incidence of occupational dermatitis and transepidermal water vapour loss (TEWL) changes from cutting fluids (neat mineral oils) in 24 new machinists with 27 armed forces paramedics (controls) over a 6-month period. The cumulative incidence of occupational dermatitis in positive controls increased from 38% at week 3 to 77% at week 6. It then decreased to 50% at week 9 and thereafter remained constant at about 50% throughout the remaining study period. 2 workers sought medical treatment for their dermatitis. Only 1 worker had a job transfer because of his dermatitis. None of the

Approach to hand dermatitis in primary care.

Hand dermatitis is commonly seen in primary care, although it is often underdiagnosed. Exogenous causes should always be considered and a detailed environmental and occupational history taken, especially in patients presenting in adulthood. Although not life-threatening, the condition may have significant impact on the patient's quality of life and employment. Refractory cases or those suspected to be due to exogenous workplace agents may need to be referred for further investigation. Hand dermatitis can be treated effectively using pharmacotherapy and prevented by minimising subsequent exposu

Environmental and occupational skin diseases in Taiwan.

This presentation focuses on the four most important skin diseases in Taiwan thought to be of environmental and/or occupational origin. The majority of work-related dermatoses are contact dermatitis patients. Among occupational contact dermatitis patients, 58.5% involved irritant and 41.5%, allergic dermatitis. Electronics, hairdressing, medical practice, and construction were the most important occupations causing contact dermatitis. An endemic occurrence of chronic arsenism causing hyperpigmentation, keratosis, and cancer has been reported in Taiwan. Arsenical skin cancers present as multipl

Barrier creams: facts and controversies.

Barrier creams (BCs) represent devices aiming to protect the skin from contact with exogenous hazardous substances, especially under working conditions. By preventing penetration and absorption of contaminants, BCs are designed to reduce the risk of developing both irritant and allergic contact dermatitis. In fact, BCs should improve stratum corneum hydration as well as provide emolliency to maintain skin integrity and to restore and repair the epidermis barrier function. The formulation and ingredients of the available BCs vary widely, and thus the choice of a BC should depend on the kind of

Non-Allergic Contact Dermatitis in Different Professions: The Analysis in the Triveneto Region (Northeast of Italy) Patch Test Database from 1997 to 2023.

Contact dermatitis (CD) is one of the most common occupational skin diseases worldwide, and patch tests are used to identify allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Half of the cases were negative for patch tests (non-ACD). In our study, we aim to analyze patch test negativity in different occupational groups from the Triveneto (northeast Italy) Patch Test Database and to identify associated demographic and exposure-related factors. Data from 31,948 patients evaluated for suspected ACD between 1997 and 2023 were analyzed. All participants underwent clinical examination, completed a standardized que

[Adverse cutaneous reactions induced by exposure to woods].

Various adverse cutaneous reactions may occur as a result of exposure to wood dust or solid woods. These include allergic contact dermatitis, irritant contact dermatitis and, more rarely, contact urticaria, photoallergic and phototoxic reactions. Also cases of erythema multiforme-like reactions have been reported. Contact dermatitis, both allergic and irritant, is most frequently provoked by exotic woods, e.g. wood of the Dalbergia spp., Machaerium scleroxylon or Tectona grandis. Cutaneous reactions are usually associated with manual or machine woodworking, in occupational setting or as a hobb

Allergic contact dermatitis: Patient management and education.

Allergic contact dermatitis is a common diagnosis resulting from exposure to a chemical or chemicals in a patient's personal care products, home, or work environment. Once patch testing has been performed, the education and management process begins. After the causative allergens have been identified, patient education is critical to the proper treatment and management of the patient. This must occur if the dermatitis is to resolve. Detailed education is imperative, and several resources are highlighted. Photoallergic contact dermatitis and occupational contact dermatitis are other considerati

Allergic contact dermatitis due to a PVC table cover.

BACKGROUND: Plastics are a common cause of occupational skin disorders such as irritant or allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). CASE REPORT: We report a case of occupational ACD due to a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic table cover used as a mouse pad for which we performed patch tests and obtained positive patch tests for the PVC table cover. Composition testing revealed the presence of phthalates and phosphites, which may represent the specific allergens. CONCLUSIONS: Contact with some of the chemical components of the PVC table cover, together with a combination of sweating and friction, ma

[Allergic contact dermatitis in beauty parlor clients].

Occupational contact dermatitis in hair dressers and beauticians has increased in importance in the past years. Type IV-allergies against glyceryl monothioglycate components of permanent waves are most common. Other occupational allergens include bleach components such as ammonium persulfate and hair dye ingredients such as p-phenylenediamine (PPD) and p-toluylene-diamine (PTD) base. Allergies to hair dyes in customers of hair dressers have rarely been observed. Two female patients developed allergic contact dermatitis of the scalp and face after repeated use of Polycolor intensivtönung schwar
