BACKGROUND: Maintaining fat-free mass (FFM) during weight loss is important to maintain a healthy body composition. This review examined changes in FFM during weight loss induced by diet and exercise interventions, incretin-based therapies, and bariatric surgery, and assessed whether the relative loss of FFM differs by weight-loss modality.
METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase was conducted for randomised controlled trials published from 2015 to October 21st, 2025. Eligible studies included adults with overweight or obesity (with or without type 2 diabetes), ac

Background: Obesity is a multifactorial chronic disease associated with increased risk of metabolic disorders, reduced quality of life, and rising healthcare costs. Although weight reduction is achievable through various dietary approaches, maintaining the achieved results remains a major clinical challenge. This review aims to identify and discuss dietary, behavioral, and lifestyle strategies that support long-term weight loss and weight maintenance. Methods: A narrative literature review was conducted in two stages using PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The search included peer-reviewed s

BACKGROUND: Diet-induced weight loss is associated with a decline in lean body mass, as mediated by an impaired response of muscle protein synthesis (MPS). The dose-response of MPS to ingested protein, with or without resistance exercise, is well characterized during energy balance but limited data exist under conditions of energy restriction in clinical populations.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the dose-response of MPS to ingested whey protein following short-term diet-induced energy restriction in overweight, postmenopausal, women at rest and postexercise.
DESIGN: Forty middle-aged (58.6±0.4 y)

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the benefit and tolerability of two dosages of a proprietary flaxseed mucilage (IQP-LU-104) in reducing body weight in overweight and moderately obese individuals.
METHODS: In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, bi-center trial, 108 participants (body mass index [BMI] 25-<35 kg/m2) were randomly allocated to receive either IQP-LU-104 high dose (104HD), IQP-LU-104 low dose (104LD), or placebo. Participants were instructed to consume 1 sachet of the investigational product (containing IQP-LU-104 or matching placebo) before or with

OBJECTIVE: Recent research has raised important questions about the relationships between weight suppression (WS) (discrepancy between highest-ever and current weight), dietary restraint, and binge eating in bulimia nervosa (BN).
METHOD: In the current study, these variables were studied cross-sectionally through secondary analyses of baseline data collected in a multi-site treatment study. Participants (N = 182) were treatment-seeking women diagnosed with BN. Dietary restraint and binge eating were measured via the Eating Disorders Examination.
RESULTS: WS was directly and dietary restraint

We reviewed articles evaluating the relations among dieting, weight loss treatment, weight cycling, eating disorders, and psychological functioning in overweight and obese adults. Moderate caloric (energy) restriction, in combination with behavioral weight loss treatment, does not seem to cause clinically significant binge eating in overweight adults without preexisting binge eating problems and might ameliorate binge eating, at least in the short term, in those reporting recurrent binge eating before treatment. Most studies of behavioral weight loss interventions report improvements in psycho

OBJECTIVE: While most individuals with bulimia nervosa begin dieting prior to the onset of binge eating, some individuals begin binge eating prior to dieting. The purpose of this study was to assess the differences between these two groups.
METHODS: Participants (N = 120) in a treatment study for bulimia nervosa were separated into two groups (Binge First vs. Diet First) based on the ages they reported for the onset of binge eating and of dieting and then compared across a number of variables.
RESULTS: Individuals in the Binge First group reported higher weight, higher shape and weight conce

It has long been believed that food restriction leads to psychological disturbances, including depression, preoccupation with food, and binge eating. However, recent studies suggest that comprehensive weight loss programs that incorporate behavioral treatment, diet change, and encouragement of physical activity in fact can improve the psychological state, including mood. A study conducted on subjects participating in the Weight Watchers program demonstrated positive psychological changes and improved quality of life. These changes may help motivate overweight people to maintain the physical ac

The continuum model of bulimia nervosa suggests that dieting plays a major role in the etiology and maintenance of bulimia. However, a previous study (M. R. Lowe et al., 1996) recently found no relationship between dieting intensity and binge eating problems in nonclinical participants differing widely in eating and weight concerns. The present study extended these findings by examining the relationship between dieting and bingeing among individuals with bulimia. Three samples of individuals diagnosed with bulimia were divided into frequent and infrequent weight-loss dieters and were compared

OBJECTIVE: This study explored links among body image, dieting behavior, and nutritional status among 40 nationally ranked junior figure skaters.
METHOD: Questionnaires were provided to 40 junior skaters (range 12.9-22.9 years) during a skaters' camp. Food intakes were recorded over 4 consecutive days and blood samples were drawn. Nutritional status was assessed using food intake records and selected biomarker data.
RESULTS: Data suggested that these athletes dieted despite relative satisfaction with body image. Although biochemical measures of nutritional status were all within normal range

The media has been rife with stories about dexfenfluramine, the newest anti-obesity drug. The predictable result of this media coverage is that many patients are asking their physicians for the drug. In a special Q & A feature, a Des Moines family physician writes about the latest diet pill and a special ad hoc committee formed at his clinic.

This study was conducted to elucidate the mechanism of glucose intolerance due to carbohydrate restriction. 15 non-diabetic patients, aged 51 +/- 3 yr, were placed under dietary condition-I (2,012 kcal/day; carbohydrate 299 g) for more than 3 days after admission and then condition-I was substituted by condition-II (1,156 kcal/day; carbohydrate 139 g) for 2 weeks. At the end of condition-I and -II, 75 g OGTT was performed. After the comparison between condition-I and -II, patients were subdivided into two groups, namely, glucose tolerance-improved (n = 8) and -impaired (n = 7) groups. In the f

Concurrent verbalisation and a self-report questionnaire were used to investigate self-statements in patients with anorexia nervosa, patients with bulimia nervosa, two groups of dieters and non-dieting controls. Thoughts were collected while subjects performed three behavioural tasks, looking at themselves in a full-length mirror, weighing themselves and eating a chocolate covered mint. Both groups of patients had more negative thoughts related to eating, weight and shape than those in the three control groups. In addition, patients with anorexia nervosa showed a greater concern with eating wh
