Congenital segmental dilatation of the intestine: an in-depth review.

OBJECTIVE: Congenital segmental dilatation of the intestine (CSDI) is a rare gastrointestinal condition. We conducted a scoping review through MEDLINE and Google Scholar, collecting data from 1959 through August 2020 to better understand this peculiar disease. METHODS: The clinical and pathological features of 150 patients were reviewed. RESULTS: The mean age was 25.9 days, and 61.3% of patients were male. An antenatal diagnosis was made in 15.3% of patients. Predominant symptoms included abdominal distension (83.9%) and vomiting (61.3%). Pallor and anemia were associated with ileal CSDI. Th…

Progressive pulmonary tuberculosis associated with bronchial dilatation: A clinical image.

Bronchial dilatation is a potentially serious and irreversible clinical and radiological entity. It is an often underdiagnosed condition, particularly in developing countries. This clinical image presents bronchial dilatations of casual discovery associated with radiographic images suggestive of progressive pulmonary tuberculosis. Thoracic imaging remains crucial in the diagnosis of bronchopulmonary diseases.

Microstructural Periventricular White Matter Injury in Post-hemorrhagic Ventricular Dilatation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The neurologic deficits of neonatal post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH) have been linked to periventricular white matter injury. To improve understanding of PHH-related injury, diffusion basis spectrum imaging (DBSI) was applied in neonates, modeling axonal and myelin integrity, fiber density, and extrafiber pathologies. Objectives included characterizing DBSI measures in periventricular tracts, associating measures with ventricular size, and examining MRI findings in the context of postmortem white matter histology from similar cases. METHODS: A prospective cohort

Epidemiology of post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation in very preterm infants.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the incidence, trends, management's variability and short-term outcomes of preterm infants with severe post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation (sPHVD). METHODS: We reviewed infants <33 weeks' gestation who had PHVD and were admitted to the Canadian Neonatal Network between 2010 and 2018. We compared perinatal characteristics and short-term outcomes between those with sPHVD and those with mild/moderate PHVD and those with and without ventriculo-peritoneal (VP) shunt. RESULTS: Of 29,417 infants, 2439 (8%) had PHVD; rate increased from 7.3% in 2010 to 9.6% in 2018 (P =…

Ectopic gallbladder with congenital biliary dilatation: a pediatric case report.

BACKGROUND: An ectopic gallbladder is a rare anomaly and can result in the misinterpretation of imaging findings and clinical confusion. Knowledge of such anomalies facilitates accurate diagnoses and prompt management. We report a pediatric case of an ectopic gallbladder concomitant with congenital biliary dilatation (CBD). CASE PRESENTATION: A 9-year-old girl was referred to our hospital for elevated liver enzyme levels. Following physical examination and a review of medical imaging findings, she was diagnosed with Todani type IV-A CBD. We could not visualize the gallbladder by abdominal ult…

Surgical Ablation of Permanent Atrial Fibrillation: Age, LV Dilatation, Obesity.

OBJECTIVES: Although concomitant surgical ablation can help to reach freedom from atrial fibrillation (FREEAF) even in patients with permanent atrial fibrillation (AF), some cardiac surgeons hesitate to perform concomitant ablation to avoid perioperative risk escalation. Here, we investigated outcome and predicators of therapeutic success of concomitant surgical ablation in an all-comers study. METHODS: Ablation-naïve patients with formerly accepted permanent AF (FAP, n = 41) or paroxysmal AF (parAF, n = 24) underwent concomitant epicardial bipolar radio frequency ablation and implantable loo

Sleeve gastrectomy for idiopathic acute gastric dilatation with transmural necrosis.

Acute gastric dilatation (AGD) is usually related to eating disorders, postoperative status and mechanical obstruction of the duodenum. When intragastric pressure is augmented, it can lead to alteration of blood flow and result in transmural necrosis. However, there are very few reports on idiopathic AGD and so here we describe the case of a 26-year-old woman diagnosed with AGD without any apparent cause. Conservative treatment was initially conducted, but because of the persistence of dilatation, presence of gastric ulcer and gastric pneumatosis, a surgical approach was necessary. During surg…

Network Analysis Reveals Proteins Associated with Aortic Dilatation in Mucopolysaccharidoses.

Mucopolysaccharidoses are caused by a deficiency of enzymes involved in the degradation of glycosaminoglycans. Heart diseases are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in MPS patients, even in conditions in which enzyme replacement therapy is available. In this sense, cardiovascular manifestations, such as heart hypertrophy, cardiac function reduction, increased left ventricular chamber, and aortic dilatation, are among the most frequent. However, the downstream events which influence the heart dilatation process are unclear. Here, we employed systems biology tools together with trans…

Retrospective analysis of 736 cases of canine gastric dilatation volvulus.

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors influencing the survival of confirmed gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV) cases presented to a specialist referral and emergency hospital. METHODS: Clinical records of confirmed GDV cases admitted to two specialist referral and emergency centres in Sydney (Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) Homebush and ARH Baulkham Hills) between July 1999 and July 2019 were searched. RESULTS: A total of 736 GDV cases were reviewed, of which 460 dogs were surgically treated and 276 dogs were humanely killed. The survival rates of patients operated on by general surgeons and speciali…

Acute massive gastric dilatation: a rare, forgotten complication of fundoplication.

An 8-year-old boy with a history of multiple neonatal laparotomies, including congenital diaphragmatic hernia repair and an open fundoplicat … rmed, sparing the viable tissue. The patient went on to make a full recovery. Acute massive gastric dilatation (AMGD) is a rare condition characterised by severe gastric distension. Gastric ischaemia results when intragastric pressure exceeds venous pressure, obstructing venous outflow. It is important to recognise AMGD as a severe complication of fundoplica …

Cervical Dilatation Curves of Spontaneous Deliveries in Pregnant Japanese Females.

Background: Although cervical dilatation curves are crucial for appropriate management of labor progression, abnormal labor progression and obstetric interventions were included in previous and widely-used cervical dilatation curves. We aimed to describe the cervical dilatation curves of normal labor progression in pregnant Japanese females without abnormal labor progression and obstetric interventions. Methods: We completed retrospective obstetric record reviews on 3172 pregnant Japanese females (parity = 0, n = 1047; parity = 1, n = 1083; parity ≥ 2, n = 1042), aged 20 to 39 years old at del…
