[Prognosing the development of toxic encephalopathy after exposure to a complex of chemical substances in fire fighters].

92 fire fighters with the toxic encephalopathies and with no signs of this disease have been examined using the electrophysiological and medical-psychological procedures. The resulting study indices have been processed using a discriminant analysis. The probability of the toxic encephalopathy development in the subjects with occupational exposure to a complex of the harmful chemical substances has been calculated using the diagnostic coefficients and a prognostic index.

Pathways from Childhood Adversity to Prescription Drug Misuse Among Young Adult African Immigrants.

PURPOSE: African immigrants remain underrepresented in research on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and substance misuse. This study examined the relationship between ACEs and non-medical prescription drug use (NMPDU) among young adult African immigrants in the United States and explored whether mental health distress, perceived discrimination, and self-esteem mediated this relationship. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were drawn from a cross-sectional survey of 599 African immigrants in the United States; analyses focused on a subsample of 297 young adults ages 18-25. Ordinary least squares

Person-Centered Approach to Understanding Psychosocial Stressor Subgroups and Cardiovascular Disease: New Perspectives From the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis Study.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the longitudinal associations of psychosocial stress subgroups with cardiovascular disease (CVD) events and whether social support, neighborhood cohesion, and physical activity modified these associations in MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis). METHODS AND RESULTS: Data from 6349 adults (aged: 62.2 ± 10.2 years; 52.9% women) from the MESA study with no prior CVD in 2000 to 2002 (baseline) were used in this analysis. Latent class analysis was used to specify distinct psychosocial stress subgroups based on self-reported stressors stemming from respondent

Auditory discrimination as a condition for E-learning based Speech Therapy: a proposal for an auditory discrimination test (ADT) for adult dysarthric speakers.

BACKGROUND: Web based speech training for dysarthric speakers, such as E-learning based Speech Therapy (EST), puts considerable demands on auditory discrimination abilities. AIMS: To discuss the development and the evaluation of an auditory discrimination test (ADT) for the assessment of auditory speech discrimination skills in Dutch adult dysarthric speakers as a prelude to EST. METHOD: Five ADT subtests were developed, each addressing a vital speech dimension in speech therapy: articulation (segmental elements), intensity, overall pitch, speech rate and intonation. A healthy control group

Evaluation of cannabinoid agonists using punished responding and midazolam discrimination procedures in squirrel monkeys.

RATIONALE: Clinical studies have suggested that marijuana and nabilone have anxiolytic effects in humans, yet studies of anxiolytic-like effects of cannabinoid agonists in mice and rats have yielded mixed results. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to compare the effects of cannabinoid agonists and clinically used anxiolytic drugs in monkeys using punished responding and midazolam discrimination procedures. METHODS: Monkeys were trained to discriminate an i.m. injection of 0.3 mg/kg midazolam from saline or, in a separate group, to respond under a multiple schedule of food reinf

Color discrimination in action: High-throughput measurement in immersive VR.

Precise measurement of color discrimination across color space is limited by the time and effort required to collect large psychophysical datasets. We investigated whether immersive virtual reality (VR) can support high-throughput measurement of color discrimination without compromising data quality. A standard four-alternative forced-choice odd-one-out task was embedded in an interactive VR environment inspired by the rhythm game Beat Saber, in which participants indicated the location of a chromatic target by slicing approaching cubes. Stimuli were presented on a color-calibrated VR headset,

Intensity Discrimination of Electrocutaneous Haptic Feedback is Enhanced at Low Frequencies and With Repeated Exposure.

Electrocutaneous (EC) stimulation is a promising modality for noninvasive tactile feedback. Increasing the pulse frequency of EC stimulation has been shown to increase the perceived intensity in a nonlinear way. However, it is unclear why the relationship is nonlinear and how the nonlinearity impacts the theoretical number of discriminable sensory gradations that can be evoked by EC stimulation, as would be necessary to effectively convey the magnitude of tactile interactions. To address this, we systematically quantify just-noticeable differences (JNDs) and corresponding Weber fractions (WFs)

Perceived discrimination and monocyte abundance in older adults: Findings from the Health and Retirement Study.

Perceived discrimination is a pervasive social stressor linked to adverse health outcomes, and these effects appear to be mediated at least in part by immune system alterations that may affect inflammation-related diseases. To determine the cellular mechanisms involved, we investigated the association between everyday perceived discrimination and circulating monocyte counts in data from the 2016 Health and Retirement Study Venous Blood Study (n = 6332). After adjusting for age, sex, race/ethnicity, body mass index, smoking, and alcohol consumption, individuals reporting higher levels of percei

Cannabimimetic and discriminative stimulus effects of hexahydrocannabinols in mice.

BACKGROUND: Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) recently appeared on the recreational drug market and is often sold as a legal replacement for Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC). Users primarily consume HHC for recreational purposes, but adverse effects have been reported. Given the scant literature on HHC, additional research is needed to better understand its effects. AIMS: The present study sought to determine whether 9(R)-hexahydrocannabinol [9(R)-HHC] and 9(S)-hexahydrocannabinol [9(S)-HHC] are psychoactive cannabinoids that share behavioral effects with Δ9-THC. METHODS: Adult male mice were admini

Lack of Williams syndrome-associated genes alters quantity discrimination in zebrafish.

The ability to discriminate sets of items based on their numerosity is alleged to be an evolutionary conserved mechanism in all vertebrates. People with Williams syndrome (WS), a rare multigenic condition, show altered number and quantity cognition abilities. Assessing the contribution of specific genes to WS using animal models could help understand the basis of numerical impairments. Here, we assessed the quantitative abilities of juvenile zebrafish (Danio rerio) with loss of function of two of the genes affected in WS using a group size preference behavioural assay. The selected genes were:

The collective impact of childhood abuse, psychache, and interpersonal needs on suicidal ideation among individuals with bipolar disorder: A discriminant analysis.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is one of the ten leading causes of death in the United States. Childhood abuse, psychache (intense emotional pain), and interpersonal needs are widely known to be associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors. However, only a limited number of studies investigate whether these variables, when analyzed collectively, are able to distinguish between a group of individuals who report suicidal ideation and those who deny such thoughts. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data were collected from individuals (N =177) with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder participating in an intensive ou

Working memory representation of empty sets in the primate parietal and prefrontal cortices.

For the brain, representing empty sets as a precursor to zero is a challenge because it requires the active coding of a quantitative category that, by definition, contains no items. Recent neurophysiological recordings show that empty sets are distinctively encoded by neurons in the primate ventral intraparietal area (VIP) and the prefrontal cortex (PFC). However, how empty sets are represented in working memory is unknown. We simultaneously recorded from VIP and PFC while rhesus monkeys performed a delayed numerosity matching task that required the maintenance of numerosities in memory for a

Evaluation of visual motion perception ability in mice with knockout of the dyslexia candidate susceptibility gene Dcdc2.

Developmental dyslexia is a heritable disability characterized by difficulties in learning to read and write. The neurobiological and genetic mechanisms underlying dyslexia remain poorly understood; however, several dyslexia candidate risk genes have been identified. One of these candidate risk genes-doublecortin domain containing 2 (DCDC2)-has been shown to play a role in neuronal migration and cilia function. At a behavioral level, variants of DCDC2 have been associated with impairments in phonological processing, working memory and reading speed. Additionally, a specific mutation in DCDC2 h

Specific problems in visual cognition of dyslexic readers: Face discrimination deficits predict dyslexia over and above discrimination of scrambled faces and novel objects.

Evidence of interdependencies of face and word processing mechanisms suggest possible links between reading problems and abnormal face processing. In two experiments we assessed such high-level visual deficits in people with a history of reading problems. Experiment 1 showed that people who were worse at face matching had greater reading problems. In experiment 2, matched dyslexic and typical readers were tested, and difficulties with face matching were consistently found to predict dyslexia over and above both novel-object matching as well as matching noise patterns that shared low-level visu

Impaired performance of patients with writer's cramp in complex fine motor tasks.

OBJECTIVE: Writer's cramp (WC) is a task-specific focal dystonia. WC is characterized by involuntary contractions of muscles of the hand and arm during handwriting, resulting in impaired writing with exaggerated finger forces. The generalization of symptoms to other fine motor tasks is widely discussed. The aim of the study was to determine affected fine motor aspects with an extensive testing battery. METHODS: Twelve people with WC and twelve healthy controls were examined. Performance in the Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test, Nine-Hole-Peg Test and 2-point discrimination was evaluated. To an

Force-Rate Cues Reduce Object Deformation Necessary to Discriminate Compliances Harder than the Skin.

Grasping and manipulating an object requires us to perceive its material compliance. Compliance is thought to be encoded by relationships of force, displacement, and contact area at the finger pad. Prior work suggests that objects must be sufficiently deformed to become discriminable, but the utility of time-dependent cues has not been fully explored. The studies herein find that the availability of force-rate cues improve compliance discriminability so as to require less deformation of stimulus and finger pad. In particular, we tested the impact of controlling force-rate and displacement-rate

Shape-independent object category responses revealed by MEG and fMRI decoding.

Neuroimaging research has identified category-specific neural response patterns to a limited set of object categories. For example, faces, bodies, and scenes evoke activity patterns in visual cortex that are uniquely traceable in space and time. It is currently debated whether these apparently categorical responses truly reflect selectivity for categories or instead reflect selectivity for category-associated shape properties. In the present study, we used a cross-classification approach on functional MRI (fMRI) and magnetoencephalographic (MEG) data to reveal both category-independent shape r

Human attention filters for single colors.

The visual images in the eyes contain much more information than the brain can process. An important selection mechanism is feature-based attention (FBA). FBA is best described by attention filters that specify precisely the extent to which items containing attended features are selectively processed and the extent to which items that do not contain the attended features are attenuated. The centroid-judgment paradigm enables quick, precise measurements of such human perceptual attention filters, analogous to transmission measurements of photographic color filters. Subjects use a mouse to locat

Fixating on the size-speed illusion of approaching railway trains: What we can learn from our eye movements.

Railway level crossing collisions have recently been linked to a size-speed illusion where larger objects such as trains appear to move slower than smaller objects such as cars. An explanation for this illusion has centred on observer eye movements - particularly in relation to the larger, longer train. A previous study (Clark et al., 2016) found participants tend to make initial fixations to locations around the visual centroid of a moving vehicle; however individual eye movement patterns tended to be either fixation-saccade-fixation type, or smooth pursuit. It is therefore unknown as to whic

Barriers to workplace HIV testing in South Africa: a systematic review of the literature.

Low workplace HIV testing uptake makes effective management of HIV and AIDS difficult for South African organisations. Identifying barriers to workplace HIV testing is therefore crucial to inform urgently needed interventions aimed at increasing workplace HIV testing. This study reviewed literature on workplace HIV testing barriers in South Africa. Pubmed, ScienceDirect, PsycInfo and SA Publications were systematically researched. Studies needed to include measures to assess perceived or real barriers to participate in HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT) at the workplace or discuss perceived or
