Transmission of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pose substantial risks to institutional healthcare employees working with blood. While the risk of contracting hepatitis B in the hospital setting is much greater than the probability of acquiring HIV, the cost of treating the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)--if it develops--is much greater in both dollars and human suffering. In addition to the risks posed by the presence of HIV infection in the hospital increase daily. By the end of 1990, one of every 14 hospitalized patients will be an HIV carrier.

METHODS: Charts of 299 patients with corneal ulcers seen at the Cornea Service of Wills Eye Hospital from January 1, 1996, to June 30, 1999, were retrospectively reviewed. BACKGROUND: Fluorophotometry can be used to quantify changes in epithelial permeability (Pdc), corneal pH, and tear exchange (T95; time to deplete 95% of a fluorescent dye from beneath a contact lens) associated with contact lens wear. BACKGROUND: Intraperitoneal (IP) radioactive chromic phosphate (P32) remains investigational in the treatment of patients with ovarian and/or endometrial cancer. Single-use percutaneously placed catheters offer the advantage of therapy without additional surgery.
