Lifetime and 12-month intermittent explosive disorder in Latinos.

This study examined the occurrence, correlates, and psychiatric co-morbidities of lifetime and 12-month intermittent explosive disorder (IED) and whether impairment due to IED differed across Latino groups. We used data on 2,554 Latino adults (75.5% response rate) from the National Latino and Asian American Study (NLAAS). Lifetime and 12-month prevalence of IED among Latinos were 5.8% and 4.1%, respectively. Unemployment was a common risk factor for both lifetime and 12-month IED. Protective factors for both lifetime and 12-month IED were having poor/fair English proficiency and being born out

Gambling as a search for justice: examining the role of personal relative deprivation in gambling urges and gambling behavior.

The present article explores the hypothesis that gambling might serve a justice-seeking function for some people, as gambling might offer a means to pursuing desirable outcomes that people feel they deserve but might be unable or unwilling to attain through conventional means. In Study 1, across two separate samples, self-reports of personal relative deprivation predict problem gambling and gambling urges over and above relevant control variables. In Study 2, the authors manipulate personal relative deprivation by informing participants that they have either less or more discretionary income t

Impulsivity and expectancy in risk for alcohol use: comparing male and female college students in Taiwan.

This was a longitudinal study designed to examine whether gender differences would exist in acquired preparedness model (APM) for explaining the risk of alcohol use in Chinese college students. Impulsivity was assessed for 3,584 students in 2002. In 2003, 1,377 students were traced and assessed in alcohol outcome expectancy, drinking behavior, and alcohol related problems, with 1,122 valid data (male=438). Separated by gender, the data was analyzed with the Structural Equation Model. Results showed that positive, not negative, outcome expectancy for alcohol mediated impulsivity's effect on alc

[Pharmacological treatment of pathological gambling].

BACKGROUND: The need for effective treatment for pathological gambling is urgent. The majority of treatment studies and available treatments today are based upon cognitive-behavioural therapy. Recently, however, several studies investigating the effects of pharmacological interventions have been published. We conducted a review of these studies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Studies for inclusion were identified through searches in PubMed covering the period 1950 to June 2005. A total of 12 studies were included. RESULTS: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and similar compounds were associated

The relation between social desirability and different measures of heroin craving.

A low association between self-reported craving and physiological measures of craving is often found. Social desirability might influence this relation between subjective and physiological reactivity. Subjects were seventy-six in-patient abstinent heroin abusers. Social desirability, general craving scores and difference scores of physiological and subjective heroin craving, measured after exposure to a neutral and heroin cue were assessed. Cue reactivity, both subjective and physiological was found to be enhanced after exposure to a heroin-related cue. In line with earlier studies, a modest r

Quality of life in kleptomania and pathological gambling.

The current study was constructed to examine the similarities and differences in the quality of life of patients with kleptomania and pathological gambling (PG). Thirty patients with kleptomania, 43 with PG, and 30 normal control subjects were assessed with the Quality of Life Inventory that assesses self-reported satisfaction with life. Both patients with kleptomania and PG had significantly lower quality of life scores than normal control subjects ( t = 7.32; df = 58; P < .001; t = 7.32; df = 71; P < .001, respectively). These results suggest that patients with kleptomania and pathological g

Explosive-aggressive behavior related to bilateral subthalamic stimulation.

We describe a patient with Parkinson's Disease who underwent bilateral subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation and later presented with episodes of aggressive behavior disorder with disturbed impulse control and an inability to control anger likely related to the deep brain stimulation "switch-on stimulation". We hypothesize that increasing voltage intensity could influence neighboring passing fibers coming from basal limbic system that are involved in the regulation of affect and emotional behavior. We suggest investigating these neuropsychological disturbances considering their influence

Age of gambling initiation and severity of gambling and health problems among older adult problem gamblers.

This study examined the relationship between age at first gambling experience and severity of gambling and related problems among older adult problem gamblers. Fifty-two problem gamblers over the age of 65 years completed self-report instruments that assessed gambling problems as well as the Short Form 36 health survey. The median age at first gambling experience was 21 years. Compared with gamblers who had a late onset of gambling, those with an early onset wagered more frequently and had more severe medical and psychiatric problems. These data suggest that gambling that begins in adolescence

Prevalence estimates of pathological gambling in Switzerland.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of pathological gambling in the Swiss adult population before the introduction of new forms of gambling, and the link between pathological gambling and alcohol abuse. METHOD: 2526 telephone interviews were completed using standardized assessment instruments for identifying potential and probable pathological gamblers (SOGS) and alcohol abuse (CAGE). RESULTS: The current prevalence of probable and potential pathological gamblers were estimated to be 0.8% and 2.2%, respectively. The results also show a clear correlation betwee

Pathological gambling in Louisiana: an epidemiological perspective.

A review of telephone interview data using the South Oaks Gambling Screen on a random sample of 1,818 Louisiana residents > 18 years indicated that 4.8% of adults > 21 years (approximately 122,500) have gambling disorders, compared to 14.4% of 18 to 21 year olds (approximately 21,000). Geographic distribution of gambling disorders shows equal statewide penetrance. Pathological gamblers are demographically distinct, more likely to be male, < 30 years, non-Caucasian, unmarried, and less likely to have graduated from high school than nonproblem gamblers. Two demographic clusters, males < 21 who p

[Analysis of etiologic models of disease development and continuation of bulimia nervosa using structural equation modeling].

In contrast to the great number of etiological models for bulimia nervosa, few conceptions determine the therapeutic practice. Two of these models, the ego-psychological model of reduced impulse-control and the behavioural model focussing the influence of "restrained eating" are empirically compared. Both models are not supposed to be of ubiquitous validity, but valid for subgroups of bulimic women. The theoretical assumptions are translated into structural equations and a sample of 127 bulimic women is divided up into 2 subsamples according to criteria which are presumed to define the validit

Is Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder a Risk Factor for Impulse Control Disorder in Parkinson Disease?

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) and other determinants and incident impulse control disorder behaviors (ICBs) in patients with early Parkinson disease (PD) using longitudinal data from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative. METHODS: Four hundred one newly diagnosed PD patients were prospectively evaluated at baseline (BL), month 6, and annually for 5 years. Probable RBD (pRBD) was assessed with the RBD Screening Questionnaire (RBDSQ) and dichotomized using a cutoff value of ≥6. The association of BL and time-dependent (TD)

Co-occurrences of substance use and other potentially addictive behaviors: Epidemiological results from the Psychological and Genetic Factors of the Addictive Behaviors (PGA) Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Changes in the nomenclature of addictions suggest a significant shift in the conceptualization of addictions, where non-substance related behaviors can also be classified as addictions. A large amount of data provides empirical evidence that there are overlaps of different types of addictive behaviors in etiology, phenomenology, and in the underlying psychological and biological mechanisms. Our aim was to investigate the co-occurrences of a wide range of substance use and behavioral addictions. METHODS: The present epidemiological analysis was carried out as part of the P

Abnormal perceptual sensitivity in body-focused repetitive behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Several compulsive grooming habits such as hair pulling, skin picking, and nail biting are collectively known as body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs). Although subclinical BFRBs are common and benign, more severe and damaging manifestations exist that are difficult to manage. Researchers have suggested that BFRBs are maintained by various cognitive, affective, and sensory contingencies. Although the involvement of cognitive and affective processes in BFRBs has been studied, there is a paucity of research on sensory processes. METHODS: The current study tested whether adults wi

Treatment of psychogenic polydipsia with acetazolamide: a report of 5 cases.

OBJECTIVE: Psychogenic polydipsia occurs frequently in patients with chronic psychiatric illness and is often unmanageable. We herein report 5 patients in whom acetazolamide was trialed for this symptom. METHODS: We encountered a case in which polydipsia improved with incidental administration of acetazolamide. We then used this treatment for 4 additional cases of treatment-resistant psychogenic polydipsia, some of which were accompanied by hyponatremia. RESULTS: Acetazolamide improved polydipsia and/or hyponatremia in 4 of the 5 cases. This treatment was well tolerated and allowed 3 of the

History of mild to moderate traumatic brain injury and aggression in physically healthy participants with and without personality disorder.

We tested the hypothesis that history of mild to moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with higher scores on psychometrically valid measures of aggression and impulsivity in both normal control (NC), and personality disordered (PD), participants. Participants were 458 research volunteers in whom history of mild TBI and measures of both aggression and impulsivity were collected. Aggression, but not impulsivity, scores were elevated as a function of TBI and PD status; there was no interaction between mild TBI and subject group. These data suggest that lifetime history of mild TBI i

Attentional blink in adolescents with varying levels of impulsivity.

We explore the temporal attention function in a non-clinical sample of adolescents varying in impulsivity, as assessed with the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale. In a Rapid Serial Visual Presentation task, in which two targets (T(1) and T(2)) were presented in close temporal proximity among distractors, participants tried to identify T(1) and detect T(2) in one (dual-task) experiment and only to detect T(2) in a second, control (single-task) experiment. The sensitivity of T(2) detection was analyzed using signal detection theory. The attentional blink -- the impairment in T(2) detection following t

Gender differences in adolescent gambling.

BACKGROUND: Although adolescent gambling has been linked to a wide array of risk behaviors, little is known regarding the correlates of gambling in adolescent girls as compared with adolescent boys. METHODS: We examined by logistic regression a nationally representative U.S. sample (n = 534) of 16- and 17-year-olds from the 1998 Gambling Impact and Behavior Study (GIBS) (1) to investigate the influence of gender on: 1) the association between gambling and psychiatric symptomatology; and, 2) gambling attitudes and behaviors. RESULTS: Gambling was associated with elevated rates of alcohol use
