Hepatic Lipofuscin Deposition in Living Liver Donor Candidate.

Living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) is an important therapeutic option, and ensuring donor safety is paramount. We report a case of a … sence of lipofuscin deposition itself. Histopathological evaluation plays a critical role in living donor selection, particularly when liver dysfunction is suspected. Furthermore, unexpected histopathological findings, such as lipofuscin deposition, serve to reaffirm the necessity of thorough interpretation and comprehensive discussion within the transplant team, …

Donor-recipient incompatibility at CD31-codon 563 is a major risk factor for acute graft-versus-host disease after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation from a human leucocyte antigen-matched donor.

Disparities at minor histocompatibility antigens (mHA) are thought to be responsible for acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) in patients … . We suggest that donor/recipient compatibility at CD31-codon 563 should be added to HLA-typing for donor selection and/or adjustment of aGVHD prophylaxis.

Risk Factors for No Valid Liver Graft. Multivariate Study Based on the Variables Included in the Donation Protocol of the National Trasplant Organisation.

INTRODUCTION: Among the strategies designed to optimize the number of existing liver grafts for transplantation, the implementation of the graft assessment process is one of the least explored. The main objective is to identify the risk factors presented by liver donors for «NO validity». Secondly, we analyzed the coincidence between the surgeon's assessment and that of the anatomo-pathologist in the invalid donors. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Retrospective study conducted from a prospective database that analyzes 190 liver donors, 95 valid and 95 NOT valid. The variables of each of them correspondi

Living Kidney Donor Transplantation in a Resource-limited Country: The Ivory Coast Experience.

Renal transplantation that offers a good quality of life still is not performed by the majority of countries of black Africa. We started a pilot project of renal transplantation in Ivory Coast 2 years ago. The present paper reports the preliminary results, difficulties related to the program, and perspectives regarding its expansion. Ten living related kidney transplantations have been performed over a 2-year period. Recipients and their respective donors were male. The mean age of the recipients was 42.8 years (22-57), and the mean age of the donors was 29.4 years (22-43). The mean number of

Serological screening for cytomegalovirus in a leucodepleted blood supply: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) causes harm in at-risk populations. Selection of seronegative donors has been used to prevent transmission. Leucodepletion reduces the potential for CMV transmission; however, the residual risk is uncertain, leading to variability in practice. This study systematically reviews the risk of CMV transmission in leucodepleted blood products compared to seronegative blood products. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review identified comparative studies of CMV infection rates following transfusion of leucodepleted blood from CMV-negative or unselec

Impact of donor site on fat graft survival in autologous fat transfer to the breast: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Autologous fat transfer has gained recognition as total breast reconstruction. Application remains constrained by unpredictable fat graft survival. Donor site selection may influence fat survival, but evidence remains inconsistent and consensus is lacking. This systematic review evaluated the impact of donor site selection on fat graft survival following autologous fat transfer to the breast. METHODS: MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Scopus were searched up to October 27, 2025. Eligible studies included randomized controlled trials and cohort studies reporting donor site and

Blood donation and blood donor mortality after adjustment for a healthy donor effect.

BACKGROUND: Studies have repeatedly demonstrated that blood donors experience lower mortality than the general population. While this may suggest a beneficial effect of blood donation, it may also reflect the selection of healthy persons into the donor population. To overcome this bias, we investigated the relation between blood donation frequency and mortality within a large cohort of blood donors. In addition, our analyses also took into consideration the effects of presumed health differences linked to donation behavior. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Using the Scandinavian Donation and Transfu

B cell development and regulation after T cell-depleted marrow transplantation.

Antibody secreting B lymphocytes from immunized donors can be adoptively transferred after T cell-depleted marrow transplantation to produce protective levels of antibody in the recipient. We have investigated whether these transferred lymphocytes remain subject to continued clonal selection and subsequently became memory B cells even in the initial absence of T cells. Twenty-eight donor/recipient pairs were randomized pretransplant to be immunized or not with tetanus toxoid (TT). The recipients were then vaccinated with TT at 3, 6, and 12 mo posttransplant, and the anti-TT antibody response (

The healthy donor effect impacts self-reported physical and mental health - results from the Danish Blood Donor Study (DBDS).

AIMS: This study aimed at quantifying the healthy donor effect by comparing self-perceived mental and physical health between blood donors and non-donors. BACKGROUND: In theory, the selection process known as the healthy donor effect should result in better self-perceived, health-related quality of life in donors than in non-donors. METHODS: The Short Form-12 data from the Danish Twin Registry (DTR) was compared with the data from the Danish Blood Donor Study (DBDS). Data on age, sex and smoking status were included in the analyses. The multivariable linear regression analysis was stratified

Evidence for host-driven selection of the HIV type 1 vpr gene in vivo during HIV disease progression in a transfusion-acquired cohort.

An epidemiologically linked HIV-1-infected cohort, in which a nonprogressor donor infected two recipients who progressed to AIDS, was examined. Sequence analysis, over time, of HIV-1 vpr gene quasispecies from uncultured peripheral blood cells revealed an insertion of arginine at position 90 altering a highly conserved C-terminal motif, believed to play a role in Vpr nuclear targeting. Full genome analysis from each patient showed no gene defects in other gene regions, implying that the mutational selection was unique to the vpr gene. A detailed analysis of the vpr quasispecies showed very lit

Liver transplantation in China: Achievements over the past 30 years and prospects for the future.

Over the last three decades, liver transplantation (LT) in China has made breakthroughs from scratch. Now, new techniques are being continuously incorporated. However, LT in China differs from that in other countries due to cultural differences and the disease burden. The advances made in and the current issues with LT in China need to be summarized. Living donor LT (LDLT) has developed dramatically in China over the last 30 years, with the goal of increasing transplant opportunities and dealing with the shortage of donors. Western candidate selection criteria clearly are not appropriate for C

Analysis of biological models to predict clinical outcomes based on HLA-DPB1 disparities in unrelated transplantation.

HLA compatibility is a key factor for survival after unrelated hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). HLA-A, -B, -C, -DRB1, and -DQB1 are usually matched between donor and recipient. By contrast, HLA-DPB1 mismatches are frequent, although it is feasible to optimize donor selection and DPB1 matching with prospective typing. Because classical DPB1 allele mismatches are often unavoidable, however, several biological models have been developed to predict the optimal DPB1 mismatch combination for less graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and better overall survival. In 909 recipient/donor pair…

Preoperative Risk Assessment of Early Kidney Graft Loss.

BACKGROUND: A large proportion of potential organ donors are not utilized for kidney transplantation out of risk of early allograft loss because of donor-related characteristics. These can be summarized using kidney donor profile index (KDPI). Because KDPI affects the choice of the recipient, the predictive ability of KDPI is tied to recipient attributes. These have been questioned to explain most of the predictive ability of KDPI. This study aims to quantify the effect of the donor on early graft loss (EGL) by accounting for nonrandom allocation. METHODS: This study included patients undergo

Donor age as a dual-risk factor for donor safety and recipient survival in allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Donor selection in allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) requires balancing donor safety and recipient survival. We aimed to identify dual-association donor factors (DADFs)-donor characteristics associated with both increased serious adverse events (SAEs) and inferior patient survival-using umbilical cord blood (UCB) as a donor-safety benchmark. This nationwide retrospective cohort study analysed Japanese registry data (2013-2022) including 22 892 donors and 29 559 recipients. Logistic regression identified donor SAE risk factors, while patient outcomes were evaluated…

Survival outcomes of patients after liver transplantation for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma exceeding the Hangzhou criteria.

BACKGROUND: Patient selection is one of the key factors influencing prognosis after liver transplantation (LT), and a number of selection criteria have been proposed and broadly applied. The benefit of LT is debatable when patients exceed these criteria in light of liver worldwide donor shortage. This study aims to identify key prognostic indicators predicting patients undergoing LT beyond Hanzhou criteria, to guide LT candidate selection. METHODS: The clinical data and pathological findings of patients who underwent LT in the Liver Transplantation Center of General Hospital of Southern Theat
