AIM: Postoperative treatment following osteosynthesis of ankle fractures in a flexible arthrodesis boot (Variostabil) aims at fast restoration of the function of the injured extremity while allowing early full weight bearing. This treatment regimen was validated in a clinical and experimental study.
METHODS: (1) In the clinical study part, 56 patients with internally fixed ankle fractures received after treatment with the arthrodesis boot for 6 weeks. (2) In the experimental study part, the intravascular pressure was recorded in a foot vein of 8 healthy volunteers during knee bends.

During a 4-year period, 35 nonconsecutive intraarticular fractures of the calcaneus were fixed with 2.7-mm minifragment plates and 3.5-mm small fragment screws through an extended lateral approach. The results of a prospective controlled trial of early mobilisation of Colles' fractures in the elderly are presented. Early mobilisation produced less pain and a stronger grip. It did not lead to any greater loss of reduction of the fracture. However, there was no significant improvement in the final range of movement of the wrist. Immobilisation of the wrist for six weeks in plaster is extremely inconvenient for the elderly living alone and the patients greatly appreciated the reduction of this period of time to a minimum.

UNLABELLED: One third of patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) require admission to the intensive care unit (ICU), associated with significant risk of morbidity, mortality, and incomplete recovery.
METHODS: 76 adult patients with GBS admitted to the ICU at a regional referral center over a 20-year period were studied. We determined the frequency, nature, and predictors of complications they experienced while in the ICU; this morbidity was related to long-term functional recovery and time to regain independent ambulation, extracted from longitudinal follow-up data.

We report a boy with urachal cyst managed laparoscopically. A 9-year-old boy was referred from another hospital with a history of low abdominal pain. We laparoscopically excised the urachal cyst, removing all structures within the umbilicovesical fascia, including the urachus and each medial umbilical ligament, as well as the associated peritoneum from the umbilicus to the bladder dome.
