Cyanide and cyanidation wastes management in gold leaching plants in Siaya County, Kenya.

This study assesses cyanide and cyanidation wastes management practices among small, medium and large-scale gold leaching plants in Siaya County, Kenya. The socio-economic benefits of gold extraction through cyanidation of mercury-contaminated tailings notwithstanding, the study establishes inadequate cyanide and cyanidation wastes management practices which could potentially cause significant environmental and human health impacts. Through structured key-informant interviews with operators from 15 selected gold leaching plants of varying scales of operation, along with field observations, and

Socio-economic outcomes of COVID-19 on the marginalised: Who have taken the hardest hit?

This article aims to examine the socioeconomic outcomes of COVID-19 for socially marginalised people who are clients of social care organisations (e.g. people experiencing homelessness), and the factors influencing these outcomes. We tested the role of individual and socio-structural variables in determining socioeconomic outcomes based on a cross-sectional survey with 273 participants from eight European countries and 32 interviews and five workshops with managers and staff of social care organisations in ten European countries. 39% of the respondents agreed that the pandemic has had a negati

Tailoring Biosecurity Advice in Dairy Cattle Farms: Decision Analysis to Estimate the Most Cost-Effective Option.

The implementation of biosecurity measures on dairy farms is influenced by multiple factors, including farmers' experience, perception of disease risk, social influences, and epidemiological and economic factors. The aim of this study was to identify the biosecurity option providing the highest economic return for dairy farms. To achieve this, a biosecurity cost calculator was developed using a database of prices associated with the different components required to implement each biosecurity measure. The probability of pathogen introduction was estimated through a quantitative risk assessment …

The role of individual and environmental socio-economic resources for cognitive change in very old age.

OBJECTIVES: Very old adults aged 80+ years old belong to the fastest growing population segment in many countries. Nevertheless, this age group is often underrepresented in studies of cognitive aging. The goal of this study was to examine individual and environmental socio-economic resources as correlates of cognitive aging in very old age. METHOD: We used two waves of data from 2017-2018 and 2019-2021 as part of NRW80+, a survey of a population-based sample of very old individuals who are registered with their main residence in North-Rhine Westphalia, the most populous federal state in Germa

Improved Socio-Economic Status of a Community Population Following Schistosomiasis and Intestinal Worm Control Interventions on Kome Island, North-Western Tanzania.

Research on micro-level assessment of the changes of socio-economic status following health interventions is very scarce. The use of household asset data to determine wealth indices is a common procedure for estimating socio-economic position in resource poor settings. In such settings information about income is usually lacking, and the collection of individual consumption or expenditure data would require in-depth interviews, posing a considerable risk of bias. In this study, we determined the socio-economic status of 213 households in a community population in an island in the north-western

Risk factors for child maltreatment in an Australian population-based birth cohort.

Child maltreatment and other adverse childhood experiences adversely influence population health and socioeconomic outcomes. Knowledge of the risk factors for child maltreatment can be used to identify children at risk and may represent opportunities for prevention. We examined a range of possible child, parent and family risk factors for child maltreatment in a prospective 27-year population-based birth cohort of 2443 Australians. Physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect and witnessing of domestic violence were recorded retrospectively in early adulthood. Potential risk factors

The scope of costs in alcohol studies: Cost-of-illness studies differ from economic evaluations.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol abuse results in problems on various levels in society. In terms of health, alcohol abuse is not only an important risk factor for chronic disease, but it is also related to injuries. Social harms which can be related to drinking include interpersonal problems, work problems, violent and other crimes. The scope of societal costs related to alcohol abuse in principle should be the same for both economic evaluations and cost-of-illness studies. In general, economic evaluations report a small part of all societal costs. To determine the cost- effectiveness of an intervention i
