BACKGROUND: Ophthalmology residents take the Ophthalmic Knowledge Assessment Program (OKAP) exam annually, which provides percentile rank for multiple categories and the total score. In addition, ophthalmology residency training programs have multiple subspecialty rotations with defined minimum procedure requirements. However, residents' surgical volumes vary, with some residents exceeding their peers in specific subspecialty rotations.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify if there is a difference in OKAP examination scores and surgical volume exposure during ophthalmology residency trainin

BACKGROUND: As interest in surgical simulation grows, plastic surgical educators are pressed to provide realistic surgical experience outside of the operating suite. Simulation models of plastic surgery procedures have been developed, but they are incomparable to the dissection of fresh tissue. We evolved a fresh tissue dissection (FTD) and simulation program with emphasis on surgical technique and simulation of clinical surgery. We hypothesized that resident confidence could be improved by adding FTD to our resident curriculum.
METHODS: Over a 5-year period, FTD was incorporated into the cur

Child abuse is a particularly difficult subject to teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Most doctors are dissatisfied with their training in child abuse recognition and management. We developed an interactive video based Virtual Patient to provide formal training for paediatric Basic Specialist Trainees in the recognition of suspected child abuse. The Virtual Patient case revolves around the management of suspected physical abuse in a seven month old child, who initially presents to the Emergency Department with viral upper respiratory tract symptoms. This Virtual Patient was us

The extant literature concerning attitudes toward gay men and lesbians was reviewed, with a particular emphasis on the attitudes of mental health professionals. Seventy graduate students in a variety of psychology-related areas were surveyed about their attitudes toward lesbians and gay men. Findings from hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated that after controlling for socially desirable responding, the only variable to predict negative attitudes toward gay men and lesbians was endorsement of traditional gender roles. The results of this investigation were placed within a theoret

School certificate attainment, performance at medical school, and early postgraduate career, were linked in a study of five cohorts of Aberdeen medical graduates. The results show a measure of correlation but it is argued that the time has come for long-term prospective research into the validity of selection of entrants to medical schools.

OBJECTIVES: Between 2000 and 2006 Leicester-Warwick Medical Schools (LWMS) provided parallel courses for graduate and school-leaver entrants into medicine. The parallel courses were based upon a single curriculum with ;identical teaching programmes and assessment methods over the two sites (Warwick and Leicester). Warwick runs the curriculum over an accelerated 4-year period for its graduate-entry students. LWMS hence provides a unique opportunity to compare outcomes for these two contrasting groups of students.
METHODS: We carried out an observational, quantitative cohort study over a 6-year

Problem-based learning (PBL) is an effective strategy for developing higher-order cognitive skills in biomedical education; however, structured exposure is often introduced late in postgraduate immunology curricula, leaving students insufficiently prepared for complex, independent learning tasks. Teaching immunity to COVID-19 presents additional challenges due to the need to integrate innate, adaptive, and cytokine-mediated immune pathways. The objective of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the effect of a pyramidal PBL intervention using structured mind mapping on academic performance

PURPOSE: 'Low-value' clinical care and medical services are 'questionable' activities, being more likely to cause harm than good or with disproportionately low benefit relative to cost. This study examined the predictive ability of the QUestionable In Training Clinical Activities Index (QUIT-CAI) for general practice (GP) registrars' (trainees') performance in Australian GP Fellowship examinations (licensure/certification examinations for independent GP).
METHODS: The study was nested in ReCEnT, an ongoing cohort study in which Australian GP registrars document their in-consultation clinical

BACKGROUND: The transition from fourth-year medical student to surgical intern is difficult. A lack of repetitions, experience, and knowledge is problematic. We report our experience using simulation-based technical and nontechnical skills to assess the competency of surgical interns in July and January of their intern year.
DESIGN: As part of a larger assessment effort, our general surgery interns (2010-2016) have been tested on performing an emergent cricothyrotomy, interpreting 2 arterial blood gases, and reading 3 chest x-rays in fewer than 7 minutes. We retrospectively analyzed general s

Cognitive and physical disabilities among anesthesia residents are not well studied. Cognitive disabilities may often go undiagnosed among trainees, and these trainees may struggle during their graduate medical education. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is an executive function disorder that may manifest as lack of vigilance, an inability to adapt to the rapid changes associated with anesthesia cases, distractibility, an inability to prioritize activities, and even periods of hyperfocusing, among other signs. Programs are encouraged to work closely with residents with such disa
