Neuromuscular electrical stimulation resistance training enhances oxygen uptake and ventilatory efficiency independent of mitochondrial complexes after spinal cord injury: a randomized clinical trial.

The purpose of the study was to determine whether neuromuscular electrical stimulation resistance training (NMES-RT)-evoked muscle hypertrophy is accompanied by increased V̇o2 peak, ventilatory efficiency, and mitochondrial respiration in individuals with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). Thirty-three men and women with chronic, predominantly traumatic SCI were randomized to either NMES-RT (n = 20) or passive movement training (PMT; n = 13). Functional electrical stimulation-lower extremity cycling (FES-LEC) was used to test the leg V̇o2 peak, V̇E/V̇co2 ratio, and substrate utilization pre- an

Functional electrical stimulation (FES)-assisted rowing combined with zoledronic acid, but not alone, preserves distal femur strength and stiffness in people with chronic spinal cord injury.

UNLABELLED: We investigated the effect of 12 months of functional electrical stimulation-assisted rowing with and without zoledronic acid (ZA) on computationally estimated bone strength and stiffness in individuals with spinal cord injury. We found that rowing with ZA, but not rowing alone, improved stiffness at the distal femur, but not the proximal tibia. INTRODUCTION: People with spinal cord injury (SCI) have high fracture risk at the knee after the injury. Therapies that prevent bone loss or stimulate an anabolic response in bone have been proposed to reduce fractures. Zoledronic acid (ZA

High-Voltage Electrical Injury Causing a Full-Thickness Laryngotracheal Wall Defect: Reconstruction With an Anterolateral Thigh Free Flap and an Inverted Split-Thickness Skin Graft.

Full-thickness loss of the laryngotracheal wall is a rare and severe consequence of high-voltage electrical injury. It is anatomically and clinically distinct from the epithelialised tracheocutaneous fistula that follows tracheostomy decannulation, and it poses a far greater reconstructive problem because of progressive tissue necrosis, wound contamination, and exposure of the airway and major cervical vessels. We report the case of a 30-year-old man with approximately 30% total body surface area deep electrical burns involving the neck, abdomen, and all four limbs, who presented with an expos

Effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation based on wrist-ankle acupuncture theory on the skeletal muscle repair and gut microbiota modulation in rats with gastrocnemius muscle injury.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the gut microbiota has attracted considerable attention as a critical regulator of inflammation and metabolism, particularly due to its involvement in muscle repair via the "gut-muscle axis." This study aims to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation based on wrist-ankle acupuncture theory (WAA-TENS) in a rat model of gastrocnemius muscle injury, and subsequently to explore whether its effects are associated with alterations in the gut microbiota. METHODS: Twenty-four 8-week-old rats were randomly allocated to three groups

Preventing position-related brachial plexus injury with intraoperative somatosensory evoked potentials and transcranial electrical motor evoked potentials during anterior cervical spine surgery.

The use of somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) to monitor upper extremity nerves during surgery is becoming more accepted as a valid and useful technique to minimize intraoperative nerve injuries. We present a case illustrating the benefit of utilizing both SSEPs and transcranial electrical motor evoked potentials (TCeMEPs) for preventing position-related injury during surgery. The patient was a 43-year-old male with a history of neck pain, along with numbness and tingling of the upper extremities. While the patient was being draped, upper extremity SSEPs diminished significantly TCeMEP re

Utility of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation to Preserve Quadriceps Muscle Fiber Size and Contractility After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries and Reconstruction: A Randomized, Sham-Controlled, Blinded Trial.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and reconstruction (ACLR) promote quadriceps muscle atrophy and weakness that can persist for years, suggesting the need for more effective rehabilitation programs. Whether neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) can be used to prevent maladaptations in skeletal muscle size and function is unclear. PURPOSE: To examine whether early NMES use, started soon after an injury and maintained through 3 weeks after surgery, can preserve quadriceps muscle size and contractile function at the cellular (ie, fiber) level in the injured versus nonin
