Emotional intelligence (EI) may involve acute sensitivity to affective cues, particularly at early stages of emotional processing. Because emotional experiences unfold dynamically over time, we examined how emotional responses evolve once they become consciously accessible to determine whether the acute emotional sensitivity previously associated with EI extends to consciously experienced emotional dynamics. In this study, we examined how three facets of EI, namely, emotion recognition, understanding, and management, shape the temporal dynamics of subjective affective responses. We recruited 1

OBJECTIVE: Protective childhood experiences (PCEs) promote positive outcomes throughout life, but the mechanism of this relationship is unclear. The current study examined how facets of PCEs (emotional support, home stability, and parental education) are associated with adaptive daily emotion and coping.
PARTICIPANTS: N = 114 college students participated in this study across their first academic year.
METHODS: Participants completed weekly diaries reporting affect, coping behaviors, stressful events, and a text-entry of the most stressful event. Facets of PCEs were considered as predictors

Childhood emotional abuse is a well-established risk factor for delinquent behavior. However, research examining the pathways from emotional abuse to aggression within an integrated theoretical model remains limited. The current study examines the serial mediation of emotional dysregulation and deviant peer affiliation in the relationship between childhood emotional abuse and aggressive behaviors among male juvenile delinquents. A total of 438 male adolescents (mean age = 19.03 years, SD = 2.82) were recruited from a juvenile correctional facility in China. Participants completed a battery of

Children of depressed mothers are at significantly high risk (HR) for developing major depressive disorder (MDD) compared to their low risk (LR) counterparts. Evidence shows that HR youth exhibit a reduced late positive potential (LPP), an electroencephalogram (EEG) marker of emotional reactivity, in response to social-emotional stimuli. However, it remains unknown how emotion regulation (ER) styles may impact LPP responses in HR and LR offspring. The current study sought to examine the interplay of ER strategies (i.e., rumination, cognitive reappraisal, and suppression) and maternal history o

Human emotions are inherently complex, often manifesting intricate patterns of co-occurrence and variations across different contexts. Previous research has employed numerous indices to capture the complexity of emotional experience, yet these indices are usually mathematically redundant, leading to challenges in interpreting the multifaceted nature of emotions and their relevance to mental health. To address this, we propose a data-driven method to derive indices independently capturing co-occurring patterns of people's emotions across various contexts, which we term "emotion profiles," and e…

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the impact of a Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)-based counseling program on emotional regulation (ER) and emotional eating (EE) among overweight female students. The program incorporated four core DBT modules: mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.
METHOD: A sample of 68 female students at a public university in Saudi Arabia was selected for a quasi-experiment. The participants were divided equally into two groups: an experimental group (n = 34) and a control group (n = 34). The dependent variables (ER and E

Cyberbullying victimization (CV) is a significant stressor linked to youth mental health outcomes, including both emotional and conduct problems. While previous studies have identified various mediators including affective, cognitive, and social domains, few studies have simultaneously examined them within an integrated model in a longitudinal design. This study investigates whether loneliness, emotion dysregulation, and self-esteem mediate the association between CV and later emotional and conduct problems. A total of 501 Chinese adolescents aged between 15 and 18 years old (53.3% female; M a

BACKGROUND: Emotion dysregulation and internalizing symptoms are increasingly recognized as central features of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), yet substantial emotional heterogeneity exists among affected adolescents. This study aimed to identify distinct emotional profiles in adolescents with ADHD by integrating emotion regulation difficulties, resilience, and internalizing symptoms using a person-centered, data-driven approach.
METHODS: This multicenter, cross-sectional study included 109 clinically referred adolescents aged 11-18 years with a Diagnostic and Statistical Ma

BACKGROUND: Although the relationship between executive functions (EFs) and negative emotions has been well documented, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study examines the potential mediating role of emotion regulation and the moderating effect of gender through a moderated mediation model.
METHODS: Participants included 604 university students (Mage = 19.05 years, SD = 1.09; 372 females). Inhibitory control, working memory, and cognitive flexibility were assessed using the Go/No-Go task, the number running memory tasks (1750 ms and 750 ms), and the digit shifting task, respecti…

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is an emerging pathological condition among emerging adults, causing significant distress and hindering daily life functioning. The increasing prevalence of NSSI highlights its importance as a crucial area requiring clinical attention. To devise effective interventions for managing NSSI, it is important to identify the factors contributing to its onset and maintenance. Therefore, the current study aims to explore emotional and cognitive factors to provide a holistic understanding of NSSI in emerging adults in the Pakistani context. For this purpose, a qualitativ

OBJECTIVE: Adolescent children of US service members (i.e., military-dependent youth) face unique stressors that increase risk for various forms of disinhibited eating, including emotional eating. Difficulties with adaptively responding to stress and aversive emotions may play an important role in emotional eating. This study examined emotion dysregulation as a potential moderator of the association between perceived stress and emotional eating in adolescent military dependents.
METHOD: Participants were military-dependent youth (N = 163, 57.7% female, Mage = 14.5 ± 1.6, MBMI-z = 1.9 ± 0.4) a…

Asian Americans are highly underrepresented in alcohol use research, despite recent studies demonstrating the presence of hazardous alcohol use behaviors and increasing alcohol use rates among Asian Americans. Emotional abuse and emotional neglect serve as important individual factors that may impact hazardous alcohol use. The purpose of this study was thus to investigate (a) the association between childhood emotional trauma and hazardous alcohol use and (b) the role of resilience as a moderator. Asian American participants (N = 279) completed an online remote survey. Our findings revealed th

BACKGROUND: Affective processes play an important role in physical and mental health and in adaptation responses to the global environmental crisis. Eco-emotions-emotions that are substantially associated with the environment and anthropogenic changes happening within it-are complex and culturally varied. Despite the disproportionate impact of the global environmental crisis on low-income and middle-income countries, most psychological research to date has been conducted in high-income countries and has focused on climate change and negative climate emotions (eg, climate anxiety). The absence …

BACKGROUND: Social and emotional learning (SEL) is crucial for developing skills such as emotional regulation, cooperation, and goal achievement. Deficits in these skills are linked to later academic and behavioral problems. While SEL interventions have been widely implemented internationally, few have been tested in early childhood settings in Japan, and their effectiveness remains unclear. In 2022, the Fun FRIENDS social and emotional learning program was introduced in class units for 4-5-year-olds attending kindergartens and children's schools in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. Thus, this study

Altered emotion dynamics and emotion regulation (ER) have been indicated in theoretical descriptions of abnormal emotional functioning, which contributes to the development and maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN). Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) has recently become popular in research on eating disorders. It is a source of new insights into the psychopathology of AN as it enables intensive long-term tracking of everyday experiences and behaviours of individuals through repeated self-reports. The following systematic review aims to synthesize research on the use of EMA when evaluating em
