BACKGROUND: Insurance claims data have been used to inform an understanding of Lyme disease epidemiology and cost of care, however few such studies have incorporated post-treatment symptoms following diagnosis. Using longitudinal data from a private, employer-based health plan in an endemic US state, we compared outpatient care utilization pre- and post-Lyme disease diagnosis. We hypothesized that utilization would be higher in the post-diagnosis period, and that temporal trends would differ by age and gender.

PURPOSE: Return to work (RTW) is important for employees who have survived cancer, yet it is challenging for employers. Small enterprises (< 100 employees) might have limited resources to facilitate RTW of cancer survivors. The purpose of this article is to examine how such employers engage in the support of RTW and to uncover their needs.
METHODS: Eleven owners and one HR manager representing 12 small enterprises (various sectors) were interviewed regarding their experience with RTW of employees surviving cancer. We conducted a thematic analysis with aspects of Grounded Theory.

BACKGROUND: Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) is highly effective but also has higher initiation costs than oral contraceptive methods, which may contribute to relatively low use. This study describes the use of self-management procedures, similar to those proposed by Lagomarcino, Hughes, and Rusch (1989), to improve the productivity of 2 women with mild mental retardation who worked in restaurants. Substantial improvements were observed as a function of treatment, and the procedures were deemed acceptable by the participants, their coworkers, and their supervisors.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis acquired by two Sri Lankan nationals while they were employed in Iraq and Northern Nigeria respectively constitutes examples of an imported disease related to the 'Middle East and African employment boom'. In both cases the diagnoses were confirmed by demonstrating the parasites in smears from the lesions and in tissue sections, and by culturing the parasites in vitro. Since leishmaniasis, neither visceral nor cutaneous is prevalent in Sri Lanka the risks of 'introduced' diseases is discussed here in the context of these two cases.
