Latitude-based approach for detecting aberrations of hand, foot, and mouth disease epidemics.

BACKGROUND: Epidemics of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) among children in East Asia have been a serious annual public health problem. Previous studies in China and island-type territories in East Asia showed that the onset of HFMD epidemics evolved with increased latitude. Based on the natural characteristics of the epidemics, we developed regression models for issuing aberration alerts and predictions. METHODS: HFMD sentinel surveillance data from 2008 to 2014 in Japan are used in this study, covering 365 weeks and 47 prefectures between 24 and 46° of north latitude. Average HFMD cases …

A descriptive overview of the burden, distribution and characteristics of epidemics in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Although Uganda is a high burden country for epidemics of infectious diseases, the pattern of epidemics has not yet been adequately documented. The purpose of this study was to describe the distribution, magnitude and characteristics of recent epidemics in Uganda, as a basis for informing policy on priorities for targeted prevention of epidemics. METHODS: Qualitative and quantitative data was collected from the Epidemiological Surveillance Division of the Ministry of Health and the African Field Epidemiology Network through key informant interviews and a documents review. RESULTS…

[Clinical and laboratory features of mumps in hospitalized children in 2003-2004 epidemics].

OBJECTIVES: The frequency and duration of hospitalization as well as symptoms and chosen laboratory tests in children with mumps hospitalized during 2003-2004 epidemics. METHODS: The inpatients records of children with mumps hospitalized from January 2003 to September 2004 at the Clinic of Pediatric Infectious Diseases in Bialystok were reviewed. RESULTS: At this time, the percentage of hospitalizations due to mumps increased from 1.6% up 34.3% in December 2003. The main cause of hospitalizations was mumps meningitis (81.4%). Children with mumps orchitis (3.4%), pancreatitis (1.9%) and mixed…

Bacillus spp. among hospitalized patients with haematological malignancies: clinical features, epidemics and outcomes.

Between April 2000 and May 2005, 350 bacteraemic episodes occurred among patients treated in our haematology unit. Two hundred and twenty-eight of these episodes were caused by Gram-positive pathogens, most commonly coagulase-negative staphylococci and Staphylococcus aureus. One hundred and twenty-two episodes were due to Gram-negative pathogens, with a predominance of Escherichia coli, Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Bacillus bacteraemias constituted 12 of these episodes occurring in 12 patients, and accounted for 3.4% of all bacteraemic episodes. Of the 12 strains evaluat

Correlation of norovirus variants with epidemics of acute viral gastroenteritis in Hong Kong.

Norovirus (NV) (formerly called Norwalk-like virus) is the most common etiological agent of acute viral gastroenteritis outbreaks worldwide. Recent reports have shown that two new GII.4 variants caused epidemics in Europe. To investigate if it is also the case in Hong Kong, a molecular epidemiological study was undertaken between January 2002 and June 2005. During this period, there was a substantial increase in acute cases of gastroenteritis caused by NV. Phylogenetic analysis showed that GII.2 and GII.4 are the major circulating genotypes. Two new GII.4 variants (variants C and D) were ident…

Surveillance and modelling of HIV, STI, and risk behaviours in concentrated HIV epidemics.

BACKGROUND: HIV epidemics in most countries are highly concentrated among population subgroups such as female sex workers, injecting drug users, men who have sex with men, mobile populations, and their sexual partners. The perception that they are important only when they cause epidemic expansion to general populations has obscured a critical lack of coverage of preventive interventions in these groups, as well as appropriate methods for monitoring epidemic and behavioural risk trends. The difficulties in accessing such groups have likewise often cast doubt on the representativeness of observe…

Synergistic interactions between herpes simplex virus type-2 and human immunodeficiency virus epidemics.

Several factors clearly influence HSV-2 transmission, such as female gender and number of sexual contacts.3,4 Some are less well defined, and may be confounded by other factors, but include time since While the concept linking herpes simplex virus (HSV) shedding to transmission is plausible, few data support shedding as a surrogate marker. If shedding is to be used as a surrogate marker in future clinical studies, it must be clear how far shedding must be reduced, and what the shape of the transmission:viral load curve (or transmission:detection frequency curve) is before transmission is reduc

[The exploring of academic idea of Guang wen yi lun (Augmented warm epidemics)].

Dai's Guang wen yi lun (Augmented Warm Epidemics) is another treatise of epidemic disease after Wu's Wen yi lun (On Warm Epidemcs). This treatise embodies Dai's academic idea of discerning and curing cold-warm disease, including the following aspects, viz. the cold plague, the same way but with different results, creation of five discerning ways, detailed analysis at each sentence, checkup differentiation of syndromes, taking the exterior and interior as outline, application of the five ways and using regular way to treat variation.

Predicting and preventing measles epidemics in New Zealand: application of a mathematical model.

A mathematical model of the dynamics of measles in New Zealand was developed in 1996. The model successfully predicted an epidemic in 1997 and was instrumental in the decision to carry out an intensive MMR (measles-mumps rubella) immunization campaign in that year. While the epidemic began some months earlier than anticipated, it was rapidly brought under control, and its impact on the population was much reduced. In order to prevent the occurrence of further epidemics in New Zealand, an extended version of the model has since been developed and applied to the critical question of the optimal …

Do escape mutants explain rapid increases in dengue case-fatality rates within epidemics?

During the Cuban dengue epidemics of 1981 and 1997, significant monthly increases were observed in the proportion of total cases that presented as dengue haemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome (DHF/DSS), and in case-fatality rates for both dengue fever and DHF/DSS. We believe that theses increases can be explained by the hypothesis that some of the population of antibodies against dengue 1 virus raised after natural primary infections react with "neutralisation" determinants found on dengue 2 viruses. These heterotypic antibodies do not prevent secondary dengue 2 infections, but serve to …

Stochastic epidemics: the expected duration of the endemic period in higher dimensional models.

A method is presented to approximate the long-term stochastic dynamics of an epidemic modelled by state variables denoting the various classes of the population such as in SIR and SEIR model. The modelling includes epidemics in populations at different locations with migration between these populations. A logistic stochastic process for the total infectious population is formulated; it fits the long-term stochastic behaviour of the total infectious population in the full model. A good approximation is obtained if only the dynamics near the equilibria is fit.

[2 epidemics of arsenical encephalopathy in the treatment of trypanosomiasis, Uganda, 1992-1993].

Since 1988, the french non-governmental organisation Médecins Sans Frontières is running a control program of human african trypanosomiasis in the district of Moyo, North-Uganda. Between 1988 and 1993, more than 7,000 patients were diagnosed and treated. Since 1988, it has been noted that incidence of melarsoprol reaction had increased systematically between June and October of each year, indicating strong seasonal variation. In 1992 and 1993, two outbreaks of arsenical reactive encephalopathy (ARE) occurred in the sleeping sickness center of Adjumani. The incidence of ARE suddenly exceeded 10

Association of penicillin-tolerant streptococci with epidemics of streptococcal pharyngitis in closed communities.

The association of penicillin-tolerant streptococci with reported epidemics of streptococcal pharyngitis in Israel was studied. The streptococcal strains had been isolated during 11 epidemics of community-acquired pharyngitis and 6 food-borne epidemics of pharyngitis occurring in the last 15 years. Strains were stocked lyophilized. Isolates were defined as tolerant if the MBC/MIC ratio for penicillin was greater than or equal to 32. All 122 group A streptococcal strains isolated during the epidemics of community-acquired infection showed tolerance to penicillin. In contrast, none of the 52 str…

AI-assisted microfluidic immunoassay chip enabling early multiplex viral antibody detection in epidemics.

Rapid serological diagnostics are crucial in the early stages of viral outbreaks, when timely immune profiling guides containment and treatment strategies. Conventional assays are slow, equipment dependent, and unsuitable for field use. Here, we present a peptide-coated microfluidic immunoassay chip that integrates AI-guided epitope prediction with a pump-free PDMS design. The prediction model, ABEpre, achieved AUCs of 0.80-0.85 across benchmarks, and its large-scale outputs were consolidated into a searchable viral epitope database. Guided by these predictions, epitopes were immobilized in pa
