UNLABELLED: We found 175 cases with acute encephalitis in a population of 791,712 children aged 1 month-15 years during a 2-year surveillance period in 1993-1994. The overall incidence was 10.5/100,000 child-years with the highest figure in children < 1 year of age, 18.4/100,000 child-years. The microbial diagnosis was considered proven or suggested in 110 cases (63%); varicella zoster, respiratory and enteroviruses comprised 61% of these, and adeno, Epstein Barr-, herpes simplex and rota viruses comprised 5% each. The authors have retrospectively reviewed all tumors of central nervous system (CNS) operated at the most important neurosurgery hospitals of Curitiba in a 5-year period (1990-1994) and found 304 (22.4%) cases of meningioma. The aim of this work was to study the prevalence at birth and family aggregation of polydactyly in Chile. We studied 125,652 newborns between 1969 and 1991. The prevalence was 1,329 for each 1,000 live newborns and higher in males than in females. Familial recurrence was 22.5% and gene penetrance was estimated as 0.5 for the postaxial-A type and 0.3 for the postaxial-B type. Gene penetrance for postaxial-B type was higher in males. Estimation of gene frequencies and mutation rates gave the highest values for postaxial-B polydactyly.

Chagas' disease is a chronic form caused by a parasite, the Trypanosoma Cruzi, endemic of Latin America. The Trypanosoma Cruzi is transmitted by hematophageous bugs, particularly in dilapidated rural areas. Ribotyping performed with six restriction endonucleases was used to study the molecular epidemiology of shigellosis in Asturias, Spain. Of the 306 subjects studied, who had had hydatid cysts (Echinococcus granulosus) surgically excised in Jordan, 185 (60%) were female and 121 (40%) male. The liver was the most affected organ (57.8%), followed by the lung (26.4%). The kidneys, spleen, brain, soft tissues of neck, appendix and mesentery were less frequent sites. Multiple-organ infection was seen in 23 patients (7.5%). Over a third of the cases (35.8%) was aged < 21 years and the commonest occupation was housewife, followed by school student. The epidemiology of hydatidosis transmission in Jordan is discussed.

An epidemiological study of Legionnaires' disease in Denmark is presented. A high incidence of apparently sporadic cases of Legionnaires' disease in Denmark was found. The source of infection remains obscure in most cases. No outbreaks have been registered in Denmark, in contrast to most European countries. It is concluded that intensified surveillance, including monitoring of water distribution systems in hospitals, combined with an earlier etiological diagnosis might disclose more nosocomial cases.

This study was carried out to get a picture of risk factors associated with the occurrence of cancer breast. Three hundred and seventy two females (180 breast cancer patients and 192 controls) were selected from Ain Shams and Benha University Hospitals to be the subjects of this study. The results showed that the important risk factors affecting the development of cancer breast were: parity, age at first birth, age of menarche, age of the patient, family history, number of pregnancies and age of natural menopause. Mostly these factors are interrelated to each other.
