Development of an open-source 3D imaging method for forensic age estimation based on medial clavicular ossification: assessing area and volume ratios of epiphyses and metaphyses.

Forensic age estimation is essential for legal and social decision-making when reliable documentation is lacking. Traditionally, ossificatio … n and alignment enabled extraction of quantitative parameters including planar areas and volumes of epiphyses and metaphyses; area and volume ratios were calculated as dimensionless metrics. It was concluded that morphometric assessment of the medial clavicles via 3D imaging is a promising approach for forensic age estimation. The workflow's open-source arc …

Trichorhinophalangeal syndrome type I in monozygotic twins discordant for hip pathology. Report on the morphological evolution of cone-shaped epiphyses and the unusual pattern of skeletal maturation.

A pair of monozygotic twin girls with trichorhinophalangeal syndrome type I (TRPS I), followed from 8.3 to 16.1 years of age, is described. Both showed typical dysmorphic features and severe short stature, but only one had Perthes-like changes in the right capital femoral epiphysis. The radiographic findings and evolutionary changes of phalangeal cone-shaped epiphyses (PCSE) of the hands are illustrated in this report. The unusual bone maturation and growth of the twins are also described. Both presented poor growth and delayed bone age until about 13 years, followed by marked acceleration of …

Biological reconstruction in the growing child after tumour resection: long-term outcomes of vascularized fibular epiphyseal transfer.

PURPOSE: Paediatric limb-salvage surgery after tumour resection is challenging because reconstruction must account for small skeletal dimensions, immature bone, and residual growth. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term clinical, radiological, functional, and oncological outcomes of vascularized fibular epiphyseal transfer (VFET) after paediatric oncological resection. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed nine children who underwent VFET between 1995 and 2025 at two institutions. Surgical techniques, bone union, graft hypertrophy, neo-joint remodelling, growth-related changes, complicati

From Desbuquois Dysplasia to Multiple Epiphyseal Dysplasia: The Clinical Impact of a CANT1 Variant Across Five Unrelated Families.

Multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED) is a heterogeneous group of chondrodysplasia characterized by arthralgia, early onset osteoarthropathy, and the radiographic findings of small, flat, and irregular-shaped epiphyses. Some patients with MED have mild short stature as well. MED is genetically heterogeneous caused by pathogenic variants in COMP, MATN3, COL9A1, COL9A2, COL9A3, and SLC26A2. In 2017, pathogenic variants in CANT1, which are responsible for Desbuquois dysplasia, have also been reported in the genetic etiology of MED. To date, only three patients have been reported with CANT1-related …

Traumatic Hip Dislocation with Proximal Femoral Epiphyseal Fracture in 12-Year-Old Boy: A Case-Based Review.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric hip fractures comprised <1% of all pediatric fractures. These fractures are usually associated with high-energy trauma, such as motor vehicle accidents or fall from height. The Delbet classification of pediatric hip fractures is frequently used to describe these injuries and to relate the fracture type to the development of avascular necrosis. Treatment should be given as an emergency basis and monitored according to the type of fracture and the patient's age. Historically, casting was used for such fractures; however, due to the high complication rate, the treatment mo

Wide-Awake Tenolysis for Tendon Entrapment in a Distal Radial Epiphyseal Separation (Volar Displacement Type): A Case Report.

The patient was a 13-year-old male who fell while riding a bicycle and was initially diagnosed with a distal radial epiphyseal separation (volar displacement type) that was conservatively managed. Four months post-injury, he complained of limited movement in his left index finger and was referred to our hospital. Upon examination, the patient also complained of limited movement of the left index finger in wrist flexion. The wrist range of motion was 50° of volar flexion, 50° of dorsiflexion, 90° of pronation, and 90° of supination with the fingers extended. The X-ray revealed a radiolucent are

MRI Application in Quantification of Epiphyseal Development in the Wrist and Bone Age Estimation of Han Male Adolescents in East China.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the value of wrist MRI in bone age estimation for male adolescents in Shanghai, Zhejiang and Jiangsu. METHODS: A total of 124 Han male adolescents aged 6.0 to 18.0 years from Shanghai, Zhejiang and Jiangsu were selected as subjects. Their weight and height were measured, and T1WI and T2WI sequences of the wrist were scanned. The distal ends of the radius and ulna, and the first to five metacarpal epiphyses and corresponding metaphyses were selected as observational indexes after MRI images of the wrist were obtained. The development of each index was classified (0-2…

A homozygous hypomorphic BNIP1 variant causes an increase in autophagosomes and reduced autophagic flux and results in a spondylo-epiphyseal dysplasia.

BNIP1 (BCL2 interacting protein 1) is a soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor-attachment protein receptor involved in ER membrane fusion. We identified the homozygous BNIP1 intronic variant c.84+3A>T in the apparently unrelated patients 1 and 2 with disproportionate short stature. Radiographs showed abnormalities affecting both the axial and appendicular skeleton and spondylo-epiphyseal dysplasia. We detected ~80% aberrantly spliced BNIP1 pre-mRNAs, reduced BNIP1 mRNA level to ~80%, and BNIP1 protein level reduction by ~50% in patient 1 compared to control fibroblasts. The BNIP1 ortholog i

Use of Vascularized Fibular Epiphyseal Transfer with Massive Bone Allograft for Proximal Humeral Reconstruction in Children with Bone Sarcoma.

BACKGROUND: The vascularized fibula epiphyseal transfer provides a reconstructive option for longitudinal growth after oncologic resection of the proximal humerus in pediatric patients. However, postoperative fractures and poor shoulder function are common. The purpose of this review was to introduce a composite approach in oncologic reconstruction of the proximal humerus and assess its clinical outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively investigated five children (3 osteosarcoma and 2 Ewing's sarcoma) who underwent biological reconstruction with combination of vascularized fibula epiphyseal trans

Arthroscopic Epiphyseal Plate-Sparing Fixation of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Tibial Avulsion Fracture in Skeletally Immature Patients.

The tibial avulsion fracture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in skeletally immature patients poses challenges to orthopaedic surgeons due to the necessity of protecting the epiphysial plate during surgical reduction and fixation of the bone fragment. Several epiphysial plate-sparing techniques have been reported. However, the epiphysial plate is still in danger because in most of these techniques the fixation device is approaching the epiphysial plate or passing through it. We would like to introduce a suture fixation technique in which there is no fixation device passing through the f

Long-term outcomes of distal humeral epiphyseal separations treated via closed reduction and pinning under arthrogram.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to report the longterm radiological and clinical outcomes of the distal humeral epiphyseal separations (DHESs) treated by arthrogram-assisted closed pinning, retrospectively. METHODS: Among patients surgically treated from February 2000 to March 2010, 12 patients followed-up for at least 7 years were investigated. After careful inspection of initial simple radiographs, we performed intraoperative arthrogram for all children, confirmed DHES status, and concluded with closed reduction and pinning. At the final follow-up, the radiological and clinical out

Calibration of life history traits with epiphyseal closure, dental eruption and bone histology in captive and wild red deer.

The study of skeletochronology and bone tissue as a record of information on ontogenetic stages and events is widely used for improving the knowledge about life histories (LHs) of extinct and extant vertebrates. Compared with dinosaurs and extant reptiles, mammalian bone histology has received little attention. Here, we calibrate for the first time bone and dental age with histological bone characteristics and LH stages in ontogenetic series of red deer. We rely on known LHs of different aged individuals of captive Cervus elaphus hippelaphus from Austria to correlate epiphyseal closure, dental

A Novel Classification System for Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis Based on the Radiographic Relationship of the Epiphyseal Tubercle and the Metaphyseal Socket.

UNLABELLED: Recent studies have suggested that the epiphyseal tubercle serves as a fulcrum for rotation in slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). However, radiographic evidence of the rotational mechanism is limited. In this study, we describe a novel radiographic staging system for SCFE based on the anatomic relationship between the epiphyseal tubercle and the metaphyseal socket. METHODS: We reviewed the cases of 469 patients with SCFE who were treated at our institution between 2000 and 2017. SCFE was classified according to our proposed staging system using the preoperative lateral radi

Comparison of orthopaedic manifestations of multiple epiphyseal dysplasia caused by MATN3 versus COMP mutations: a case control study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED) is a relatively common skeletal dysplasia mainly involving the epiphyses of the long bones. However, it is a genetically heterogeneous group of diseases sharing certain aspects of the radiologic phenotype. In surveys conducted in East Asia, MATN3 was the most common causative gene, followed by COMP. In this study, the authors compared clinical manifestation of MED patients caused by MATN3 and COMP gene mutations, as well as subsequent orthopaedic interventions. METHODS: Fifty nine molecularly-confirmed MED patients were subjects of this study. T…

Epiphyseal growth plate growth hormone receptor signaling is decreased in chronic kidney disease-related growth retardation.

Linear growth retardation in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been ascribed to insensitivity to growth hormone. This resistance state has been attributed to impaired growth hormone signaling through the JAK2/STAT5 pathway in liver and skeletal muscle leading to reduced insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I). Here we determine whether systemic and growth plate alterations in growth hormone signaling contribute to CKD-induced linear growth retardation using partially nephrectomized and pair-fed control 20-day-old rats. Serum growth hormone did not change in rats with CKD, yet serum I
