An Absorption-Based PDMS/f-CNT Mass-Capacitor for Continuous Monitoring of Fire-Derived Organic Contamination.

Firefighters are exposed to complex smoke containing volatile, semivolatile, aromatic, and particulate-associated organic contaminants that accumulate on skin, clothing, and protective equipment. Conventional gas sensors monitor only selected airborne species, while passive samplers require laboratory analysis and cannot provide continuous exposure assessment. To address this limitation, we developed a proof-of-concept mass-capacitor that integrates contaminant absorption and electrical sensing within a single polydimethylsiloxane/functionalized carbon nanotube (PDMS/f-CNT) composite coated on

Pseudomonas aeruginosa in dental unit waterlines: an emerging threat of virulence genes in healthcare-associated infections.

INTRODUCTION: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a leading cause of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), especially in dental environments. In this study, we examine the prevalence of virulence factors in P. aeruginosa isolated from dental chair unit (DCU) water, aiming to evaluate the hygienic status of dental unit waterlines (DUWLs). METHODS: A total of 100 water samples were collected from DCU and the urban water supply at the Dental Faculty of Gorgan, Iran. The samples were cultured in Mueller-Hinton Broth, and DNA was extracted. Molecular identification was performed using gyrB-specific prime

Metataxonomics study of dental bioaerosols affected by waterline disinfection.

BACKGROUND: Microorganisms in dental unit water (DUW) play a significant role in dental bioaerosols. If the methods used to decontaminate DUW also help improve air quality in dental clinics is worth exploring. In this study, we aim to identify the source of bacteria in dental bioaerosols and investigate the impact of waterline disinfectants on the quantity and composition of bacteria in DUW and bioaerosols. METHODS: Two dental chair units in a separate treatment room are installed with two different waterline decontamination systems, a plasma or iodine cartridge. The experiment was performed

Patient notification for bloodborne pathogen testing due to unsafe injection practices in the US health care settings, 2001-2011.

BACKGROUND: Syringe reuse and other unsafe injection practices can expose patients to bloodborne pathogens (eg, hepatitis B and C viruses and human immunodeficiency virus). Evidence of such infection control lapses has resulted in patient notifications, but the scope and magnitude of these events have not been well characterized. OBJECTIVES: To summarize patient notification events resulting from unsafe injection practices in the US health care settings. METHODS: We examined records of events that involved communications to groups of patients, conducted during 2001-2011, advising bloodborne

Preventing central venous catheter-associated bloodstream infections: development of an antiseptic barrier cap for needleless connectors.

BACKGROUND: Reports of outbreaks associated with the use of needle-free valve connectors suggest 2 common risk factors: (1) poor adherence to disinfection practices before use and (2) a design that allows contamination when not in use. Swabbing a membranous septum with 70% isopropyl alcohol may not eliminate septal surface contamination. Frequent access through and handling of needle-free connectors also puts patients at increased risk of central venous catheter-related bloodstream infections (CR-BSIs). A novel antiseptic barrier cap has been designed to maintain health care worker safety and

Modeling surface transfer of Listeria monocytogenes on salami during slicing.

Listeria monocytogenes has been implicated in several listeriosis outbreaks linked to the consump tion of presliced ready-to-eat (RTE) deli meats, which has drawn considerable attention in regard to possible cross-contamination during slicing operation at retail and food service environments. Salami with 15% fat (a moderate l fat content deli item) was used to investigate the transfer of L. monocytogenes between a meat slicer and salami slices and to understand its impact on food safety. A 6-strain cocktail of L. monocytogenes was inoculated onto a slicer blade to an initial level of approxima

The Pan Genera Detection immunoassay: a novel point-of-issue method for detection of bacterial contamination in platelet concentrates.

Bacterial contamination of platelet concentrates (PCs) still represents an ongoing risk in transfusion-transmitted sepsis. Recently the Pan Genera Detection (PGD) system was developed and FDA licensed for screening of bacterial contamination of PCs directly prior to transfusion. The test principle is based on the immunological detection of lipopolysaccharide (for Gram-negative bacteria) or lipoteichoic acid (for Gram-positive bacteria). In the present study we analyzed the applicability of this method with regard to detection limit, practicability, implementation, and performance. PCs were spi

Occurrence of Salmonella in Ready-to-Eat Meat and Poultry Product Samples from U.S. Department of Agriculture-Regulated Producing Establishments. II. Salmonella in Ready-to-Eat Pork Barbecue Products, from 2005 to 2012.

Ready-to-eat (RTE) meat and poultry product samples from the random ALLRTE and risk-based RTE001 sampling projects of the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) were tested for both Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella. In the course of analyzing Salmonella data for calendar years 2005 to 2012, it was observed that 8 (17.0%) of 47 positive samples were from pork barbecue. The eight Salmonella-positive samples, from seven establishments in a single state, were from 1,085 pork barbecue samples tested nationwide (0.74% positive) and from 296 samples tested from that one state (2.7% positive).

Impact of intensified contact precautions while treating hematopoietic stem cell transplantation recipients during aplasia.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial infections are a major complication for patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT). Therefore, protective isolation is considered crucial to prevent nosocomial infections in this population. Here, the impact of intensified contact precautions on environmental contamination and the occurrence of bloodstream infections (BSI) in patients on a HCT unit were compared between two contact precaution measures. METHODS: A 2-year retrospective observational study was performed. In the first year, strict contact precaution measures were applied (i.

Nosocomial septicemia and meningitis in neonates.

The past decade brought with it both highly sophisticated neonatal intensive care with improved perinatal mortality rates, and increased risk for nosocomial septicemia and meningitis among survivors. Although most of these infections were caused by multiple antibiotic-resistant gram negative enteric bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus "outbreaks" appeared sporadically. Risk for nosocomial infection was related primarily to factors which enhance infant contact with these bacteria (crowding and high nurse to infant ratios, poor handwashing practices, contaminated life support equipment, antibiotic e

MiR-7 alleviates secondary inflammatory response of microglia caused by cerebral hemorrhage through inhibiting TLR4 expression.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common pathogens responsible for food poisoning due to its ability to produce staphylococcal enterotoxin (SE). S. aureus can form biofilms on the surfaces of food processing devices, enabling the distribution of SE on foods through cross-contamination events. Thailand is known for its exotic cuisine, but there is no data on the prevalence of SE-harboring S. aureus in restaurants in Thailand. METHODS: In this study, we conducted surface swabs on surfaces of kitchen utensil that come into contact with food and on the hands of food handlers wo

Nosocomial HIV infection: epidemiology and prevention--a global perspective.

Because, globally, HIV is transmitted mainly by sexual practices and intravenous drug use and because of a long asymptomatic period, healthcare-associated HIV transmission receives little attention even though an estimated 5.4% of global HIV infections result from contaminated injections alone. It is an important personal issue for healthcare workers, especially those who work with unsafe equipment or have insufficient training. They may acquire HIV occupationally or find themselves before courts, facing severe penalties for causing HIV infections. Prevention of blood-borne nosocomial infectio

Considerations for cardiac catheterization laboratory procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic perspectives from the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions Emerging Leader Mentorship (SCAI ELM) Members and Graduates.

The novel coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is highly infectious, carries significant morbidity and mortality, and has rapidly resulted in strained health care system and hospital resources. In addition to patient-related care concerns in infected individuals, focus must also relate to diminishing community spread, protection of staff, case selection, and concentration of resources. The current document based on available data and consensus opinion addresses appropriate catheterization laboratory preparedness for treating these patients, including proce

Surgical problems in space: an overview.

Terrestrial experience indicates that surgical emergencies may cause significant morbidity in space, and may present unique problems. Microgravity physiologic changes that may increase susceptibility to, and complications from, injury include fluid redistribution and diuresis, bone demineralization, and immune system alterations. Conventional diagnostic tests may be unavailable or unreliable--e.g. the radiologic finding of "air under the diaphragm", which conventionally indicates perforation of an air-containing hollow viscus, such as the stomach, with a gravity-dependent rising of gas in the

Injury patterns in motorcycle accidents.

A retrospective study of 260 cases of motorcycle accidents which occurred over a 4 1/2 year period is reported. Approximately 8% died of their injuries. The vulnerability of the tibia to open fractures is noted, and the frequent association of these open injuries with severe contamination and devitalization of tissues resulting in a high complication rate. Severely comminuted intraarticular fractures of the distal tibia and radius were numerous, and one is tempted to name the injury the "motorcycle radius." Traumatic amputations were few and all involved the lower extremity. Fractures of the c

Nitrosamine Contamination in Pharmaceuticals: Threat, Impact, and Control.

Nitrosamine-contaminated medicinal products have raised safety concerns towards the use of various drugs, not only valsartan and all tetrazole-containing angiotensin II receptor blockers, but also ranitidine, metformin, and other medicines, many of which have been recalled and prone to shortage. At any stages, from drug substance synthesis throughout each product's lifetime, these impurities may evolve if an amine reacts with a nitrosating agent coexisting under appropriate conditions. Consequently, drug regulatory authorities worldwide have established stringent guidelines on nitrosamine cont
