A 44-year-old man presented with a 2-year history of an intermittent urticarial rash, malaise, weight loss, night sweats, headaches and bone pains. As an alternative to surgical splenectomy, partial splenic embolization was performed in seven children for hypersplenism manifested by splenomegaly, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, and erythrocyte hemolysis. Within a few days, platelet and leukocyte counts rose significantly in all patients and were maintained in six of seven patients during a follow-up period of 9 to 69 months. Spleen size and abdominal distention also decreased significantly in all children. There were no infectious complications.

In order to determine the prevalence and percentage distribution of ringed sideroblasts in primary myelodysplastic syndromes, the results of Prussian blue staining were analysed in 133 cases. Ringed sideroblasts ranging from 1 to 86% of cells were found in 76 (57%) cases. Maternal haemoglobin F production has been monitored in 11 normal pregnancies, with an immunofluorescent technique. The effect of dietary zinc deficiency (imposed at weaning) on the hematological profile of the male rat was studied. Lack of dietary zinc resulted in elevated numbers of erythrocytes and segmented neutrophils and decreased reticulocyte number. The hematocrit of zinc-deficient rats was significantly elevated after the first week. The mean lifespan of erythrocytes from zinc-deficient rats (tested in adult control rats) was not significantly altered from that of controls. The lack of dietary zinc did not cause a major change in the erythrocyte density (age) distribution.
