Recent molecular imaging provides in vivo imaging of activated factor XIII (FXIIIa), an important mediator of thrombosis or fibrinolytic resistance. Two Swiss Braunvieh cows were referred to our clinic because of narrowing of the rectum and difficult rectal examination attributable to restricted arm movement within the pelvic cavity. The objective of this prospective field study was to investigate whether commonly used criteria for clinical death occurred at the same time as cardiac death, as determined by electrocardiography. Specific ECG changes during euthanasia were also studied. CASE DETAILS: A 14-year-old female cat presented with signs of respiratory distress. Pleural fluid was found on radiographic assessment. An 8-year-old Labrador Retriever developed acute central vestibular signs. An extra-axial mass was detected on MR images ventral to the brainstem. The mass was both T1- and T2-hypointense; there was also thin-rimmed patchy contrast enhancement. These findings were nonspecific, but the extreme T2-hypointensity was notable and suggested a hemorrhagic mass. The histologic diagnosis was anaplastic meningioma with acute hemorrhage. These findings document an unusual appearance of a meningioma in MR images due to intratumoral hemorrhage.
