Predicting Fear of Breast Cancer Recurrence in women five years after diagnosis using Machine Learning and healthcare reimbursement data from the French nationwide VICAN survey.

OBJECTIVE: A major concern for cancer survivors after treatment is the Fear of Cancer Recurrence (FCR), which is the fear that cancer will reappear or progress. This fear can be exacerbated by medical uncertainty about the future, leading to harmful obsession and having a negative impact on quality of life. This study aims to develop a predictive Machine Learning (ML) model using healthcare reimbursement data to better predict FCR and understand the factors influencing FCR in women with breast cancer five years after their diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used data from the VICAN (VIe apr

AraVirusPPI: A protein language model-powered method for predicting Arabidopsis thaliana-virus protein-protein interactions.

Plant-virus protein-protein interactions (PPIs) play crucial roles in viral infection and host immune responses. However, large-scale experimental characterization of plant-virus PPIs is costly and labor-intensive, suggesting the need to develop computational methods. Recent advances in biological sequence language models are offering unprecedented opportunities to develop machine learning-based plant-virus PPI predictors. In this study, we collected publicly available PPI data between Arabidopsis thaliana (A. thaliana) and viruses, establishing a robust dataset for method development. Based o

Development of a rapid metal oxide semiconductor-based sensory system for noninvasive neonatal sepsis detection.

A portable electronic nose system, termed cNose, is presented which combines an optimized metal oxide semiconductor gas sensor array with machine learning algorithms to determine fecal volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for noninvasive bedside screening of neonatal sepsis. The system was evaluated at a public hospital in Sleman, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, using 347 fecal samples (197 positive, 150 negative for sepsis confirmed by blood culture). This balanced dataset was used for exploratory machine learning analysis and proof-of-concept evaluation rather than for population-level inference. Featur

Electron Transfer-Tailored D-Band Center to Boost Nanozyme Catalysis for Interpretable Machine Learning-Empowered Intelligent Biosensing.

The escalating global burden of infectious diseases demands biosensing technologies that transcend the complexity-sensitivity-accuracy trade-off in real-world applications. Herein, an interpretable machine learning-empowered multimodal biosensor synergizing electron transfer-enhanced nanozymes and aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) for ultrasensitive pathogen detection is presented. By engineering aminophenol formaldehyde resin nanobowls anchored with monodisperse Pt nanoparticles, interfacial electron transfer (N→Pt→O) induces an upshift of Pt d-band center relative to the Ferm

Prediction of influenza A virus-human protein-protein interactions using XGBoost with continuous and discontinuous amino acids information.

Influenza A virus (IAV) has the characteristics of high infectivity and high pathogenicity, which makes IAV infection a serious public health threat. Identifying protein-protein interactions (PPIs) between IAV and human proteins is beneficial for understanding the mechanism of viral infection and designing antiviral drugs. In this article, we developed a sequence-based machine learning method for predicting PPI. First, we applied a new negative sample construction method to establish a high-quality IAV-human PPI dataset. Then we used conjoint triad (CT) and Moran autocorrelation (Moran) to enc

Spatial patterns of intestinal parasite infections among children and adolescents in some indigenous communities in Argentina.

Argentina has a heterogeneous prevalence of infections by intestinal parasites (IPs), with the north in the endemic area, especially for soil-transmitted helminths (STHs). We analyzed the spatial patterns of these infections in the city of Tartagal, Salta province, by an observational, correlational, and cross-sectional study in children and adolescents aged 1 to 15 years from native communities. One fecal sample per individual was collected to detect IPs using various diagnostic techniques: Telemann sedimentation, Baermann culture, and Kato-Katz. Moran's global and local indices were applied

Yield prediction in a peanut breeding program using remote sensing data and machine learning algorithms.

Peanut is a critical food crop worldwide, and the development of high-throughput phenotyping techniques is essential for enhancing the crop's genetic gain rate. Given the obvious challenges of directly estimating peanut yields through remote sensing, an approach that utilizes above-ground phenotypes to estimate underground yield is necessary. To that end, this study leveraged unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for high-throughput phenotyping of surface traits in peanut. Using a diverse set of peanut germplasm planted in 2021 and 2022, UAV flight missions were repeatedly conducted to capture image

Human Pose Estimation for Clinical Analysis of Gait Pathologies.

Gait analysis serves as a critical diagnostic tool for identifying neurologic and musculoskeletal damage. Traditional manual analysis of motion data, however, is labor-intensive and heavily reliant on the expertise and judgment of the therapist. This study introduces a binary classification method for the quantitative assessment of gait impairments, specifically focusing on Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a prevalent and fatal neuromuscular genetic disorder. The research compares spatiotemporal and sagittal kinematic gait features derived from 2D and 3D human pose estimation trajectories ag

Treatment response to spironolactone in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction: a machine learning-based analysis of two randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Whether there is a subset of patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) that benefit from spironolactone therapy is unclear. We applied a machine learning approach to identify responders and non-responders to spironolactone among patients with HFpEF in two large randomized clinical trials. METHODS: Using a reiterative cluster allocating permutation approach, patients from the derivation cohort (Aldo-DHF) were identified according to their treatment response to spironolactone with respect to improvement in E/e'. Heterogenous features of response ('responde

Using electronic health records to identify candidates for human immunodeficiency virus pre-exposure prophylaxis: An application of super learning to risk prediction when the outcome is rare.

UNLABELLED: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) protects high risk patients from becoming infected with HIV. Clinicians need help to identify candidates for PrEP based on information routinely collected in electronic health records (EHRs). The greatest statistical challenge in developing a risk prediction model is that acquisition is extremely rare. METHODS: Data consisted of 180 covariates (demographic, diagnoses, treatments, prescriptions) extracted from records on 399 385 patient (150 cases) seen at Atrius Health (2007-2015), a clinical network in Massachuset

How extreme rainfall and failing dams unleashed the Derna flood disaster.

On September 11, 2023, Storm Daniel unleashed unprecedented rainfall over the Wadi Derna watershed, triggering one of the most devastating floods in modern history, striking Derna, a coastal city in Libya. This study reconstructs the disaster using an integrated modeling approach that combines satellite imagery, hydrologic, hydraulic, and geotechnical simulations, machine learning, eyewitness accounts, and digital elevation data to assess the impact of cascading dam failures. Our findings reveal that the region's dams, even if structurally sound, would have provided minimal protection against
