A 13-year-old castrated male ragdoll cat's left eye was evaluated for dyscoria, iridal thickening and color change of 2 years duration, as well as elevated intraocular pressure. The primary lesion seen on ophthalmic examination was a pale pink-white mass observed in the dorsomedial aspect of a diffusely thickened iris. Metastatic workup revealed hepatic and splenic nodules, but cytology was inconclusive. The left eye was enucleated, and histopathology was consistent with uveal amelanotic melanoma.

A case is presented of traumatic cataract which was aspirated to reveal a retrolenticular mass. Enucleation of the eye showed this was a retinoblastoma whose cells were adjacent to the gaping surgical wound. I emphasize the facts that trauma and its sequelae do not preclude existence of previous serious lesions and that invasive surgical therapy in cases of intraocular neoplasm may lead to their extraocular spread. Diagnostic ultrasound examination of eyes with opaque media may be of great value in preventing such cases.

We report two cases of combined hamartoma of the sensory retina and retinal pigment epithelium (CHR-RPE) in which apparent growth of the lesion was observed. In case 1, the eye was enucleated with a presumed diagnosis of juxtapapillary malignant melanoma. Histopathologically, the enucleated globe showed an elevated peripapillary mass containing disorganized retinal tissue intermixed with vascular and glial elements as well as tubules of proliferating retinal pigment epithelium. We have summarized the clinical features of 53 patients with CHR-RPE reported between 1952 and 1988 excluding the cas

Cyclodialysis was performed in one eye of each of eight cynomolgus monkeys. Two days later, the intraocular pressure was 1.6 +/- 0.7 mmHg in eyes with cyclodialysis and 12.0 +/- 0.7 mmHg in fellow control eyes. 10(-4) M fluorescein-isothiocyanate dextran (70,000 molecular weight) was perfused into the anterior chamber of each eye for 30 min. The eyes were enucleated and dissected into sclera, choroid, retina, iris, and ocular fluid. Samples were homogenized and centrifuged, and the fluorescence of the supernatant was measured. Expressed as equivalent volumes of aqueous, the rate of anterior ch

Argon laser lesions were induced to the structures of the anterior chamber angle in rabbits and cats and in a pre-enucleated infant's eye. Histopathological changes at different follow-up periods were analyzed. The argon laser beam was also applied to 28 uncontrolled glaucomatous eyes. Twenty-five eyes responded by an abrupt hypotensive effect, but in 21 of them, elevated pressure recurred after 20 to 40 days. Eight eyes maintained low intraocular pressure throughout the 12 to 20 month follow-up period. Of these, 3 were eyes of babies with congenital glaucoma, and 3 had simple glaucoma followi

An 11-year-old boy presented with a mid-zonal pigment epithelial iris cyst. The cyst progressed relentlessly, ultimately leading to enucleation of the eye 4 years after presentation. Histopathology revealed a ciliary body schwannoma filling the anterior chamber and a small, incidental noncontiguous ciliary body melanoma. Vision loss, pupil distortion, and relentless growth despite complete cyst deflation following aspiration were clues for the tumor-induced nature of the visible cyst.

PURPOSE: To describe a case of chronic exogenous Exophiala dermatitidis endophthalmitis.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review and case report.
RESULTS: A 60-year-old man with history of chronic herpes zoster keratitis complicated by secondary fungal keratitis treated with penetrating keratoplasty presented with a white cataract, chronic anterior uveitis, and counting fingers vision in the left eye. Combined cataract extraction and diagnostic vitrectomy revealed positive cultures and polymerase chain reaction-based testing for E. dermatitidis-the same organism responsible for the keratitis. Th

We report a very unusual presentation of primary intraocular lymphoma masquerading as anterior uveitis with atypical symptoms. A 68-year-old man, initially presented with a 4-day history of painless, left blurred vision. Examination revealed 2 or more anterior chamber cells, mutton-fat keratic precipitates and posterior synechiae. Treatment was initiated, the eye settled, and the patient was discharged. He re-presented 7 months later with hypopyon, a hazy cornea, fibrin deposits and a narrowed anterior chamber angle. Over the coming weeks, it became apparent that the temporal iris was thickene

Fusarium species are a known cause of ocular infection that can produce local and/or systemic invasive fusariosis. Fusarium ocular infection can evolve to keratitis, endophthalmitis and, in extreme cases, ocular perforation. We report, for the first time in children, the case of a 5 year old girl diagnosed with toxic epidermal necrolysis who developed Fusarium ocular infection requiring ocular enucleation.

BACKGROUND: Ocular prosthetics make a decisive contribution to the functional, esthetic and psychosomatic rehabilitation of patients after ocular extirpation.
OBJECTIVES: This article provides an overview of the fitting, daily care and complications of ocular prosthetics.
METHODS: The study comprised a PubMed literature review and own clinical results.
RESULTS: Ocular prosthetics made from cryolite glass or perspex can be manufactured and fitted 5-8 weeks after removal of the eye. During this period a conformer is placed within the conjunctival sac in order to prevent scar formation and shr

We report a case of traumatic phacocele in a 42-year-old patient with a history of congenital glaucoma and bilateral goniotomies as an infant. Her left eye had little vision and poorly controlled intraocular pressure but was comfortable until her presentation after blunt trauma. Phacocele or subconjunctival dislocation of the crystalline lens is a rare consequence of blunt trauma, particularly in a patient whose only previous ocular surgery was goniotomy more than 40 years ago.

The authors presented a case of a boy aged 16, in whom xeroderma pigmentosus was diagnosed 6 years earlier. The boy was referred to the clinic on account of a quickly growing tumor of conjunctiva and cornea of his right eye. During 2-year follow-up, in spite of two surgical excision, the tumor relapsed and finally enucleation of the eyeball was performed. Histopathological examination revealed melanoma malignum. The clinical aspects of prophylaxis, early diagnosis and treatment of xeroderma pigmentosum are discussed.

Four cases of human intraocular malignant melanoma were treated with ultrasonically induced hyperthermia immediately before enucleation. Tumors were treated in two regimens: 30 minutes at 43 degrees to 45 degrees C and 5 minutes at greater than 50 degrees C. Temperatures were estimated from applied power levels, based on empirical data and mathematical models. Histopathologic changes observed in human tumors were compared with changes seen in malignant melanoma xenografts in athymic nude mice which were treated with ultrasonically induced hyperthermia for 30 minutes at 42 degrees to 46 degrees

BACKGROUND: Retinoblastoma poses a substantial burden in developing countries. We conducted this study to assess the effect of implementing a multidisciplinary approach and standardized protocols for treating pediatric patients with retinoblastoma at the Children's Cancer Hospital Egypt (CCHE).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In January 2011, the CCHE implemented standardized protocols for the diagnosis, treatment, and reporting of retinoblastoma cases. The hospital also introduced a new retinoblastoma management algorithm and data analysis system. In this study, we compared the pathologic features, t

A rare case of ciliary body melanoma (CBM) with subconjunctival extension following prior trabeculectomy is presented. The 66-year-old female patient experienced recurrent ocular discomfort and subconjunctival pigmentation in the left eye. Clinical evaluation identified a pigmented subconjunctival mass, secondary glaucoma, and evidence of previous filtration surgery. Imaging and histopathology confirmed CBM with extraocular extension, and the patient subsequently underwent enucleation; the postoperative recovery was uneventful. This case underscores the importance of considering intraocular tu

The literature-reported incidence of ophthalmic injuries occurring with facial fracture ranges widely from 0.8% to 30%. Ocular trauma necessitating enucleation or evisceration is less common, but it is not rare. The trauma and physical disability related to removal of the eye are extreme. Moreover, the loss of an eye causes severe changes to the anatomy and physiology of the orbit, resulting in deformities that affect the relationship between the socket and the prosthesis. Here, the authors present their own experience of 8 consecutive cases of trauma injuries with globe loss and emphasize the

A 29-year-old man sustained severe trauma to his left eye requiring corneoscleral wound repair and retinal detachment repair. Because of a persistent retinal detachment, he underwent vitrectomy and silicone oil implantation into the vitreous cavity. Over the ensuing 2 years 4 months, the eye gradually became glaucomatous, blind, and painful, requiring enucleation. Histopathologic examination revealed that coalescent globules of silicone oil had infiltrated the entire length of the attached atrophic optic nerve. Superficially reminiscent of the changes seen in Schnabel's cavernous optic atrophy

A 26-year-old Negro male schizophrenic is described with severe bilateral orbital injuries following attempted self-enucleation. Owing to his psychosis there was difficulty in obtaining a visual acuity and in establishing the cause of his fixed, dilated pupils. ACT scan showed bilateral orbital oedema, with surgical emphysema and haemorrhage. The visual evoked potential (VEP) was present in the right eye but absent in the left. High doses of systemic steroids effected rapid resolution of the orbital swelling and recovery of the vision in the right eye. The effects of self-inflicted injury to t
