Eyes are essential sensory organs needed by teleost Atlantic salmon for high visual acuity and survival in both the wild and in aquaculture settings. In this work, we assessed the ocular manifestations of Infectious Salmon Anaemia Virus (ISAV) infection in Atlantic salmon by a cohabitation-mediated infection assay and histological and immunohistochemical approaches. The findings reveal that Atlantic salmon with a systemic ISAV infection displayed ISAV antigen accumulation in specific ocular tissues and significant ocular morphological changes that could compromise visual acuity. Immunohistoche

Corneal infiltrate is a common presentation in ophthalmic emergency departments. Infiltrates can be classified as sterile or infectious. Sterile corneal infiltrate (SCI) is less studied compared to infectious infiltrate. SCI can present in individuals who wear contact lenses or after corneal procedures, such as corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL), photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), and laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). It is crucial to distinguish between SCI and infectious keratitis, as the treatment approach differs greatly. Infectious infiltrates often present with mucopurulen

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk factors, microbiology, and treatment outcomes of polymicrobial keratitis (PMK).
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 65 patients diagnosed with PMK between 2016 and 2019. The clinical and microbiological characteristics and outcomes were evaluated. The primary outcome measure was clinical resolution of keratitis. Absolute success (group A) was defined as resolution of infection with medical treatment, qualified success (group B) was resolution with medical therapy and additional minor procedures, and failure (group C) was defined as wors

To identify the most common isolates from the corneal ulcers with antimicrobial pattern of bacterial isolates. All patients with suspected corneal ulceration presenting to BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences from Jan 2004 - Dec 2008 were evaluated. Corneal scraping was performed and processed for direct microscopy, bacteriological and fungal culture. Bacterial isolates were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Of 351 specimens examined, growth of etiological agents were obtained in 278 (79.20%). Of these, 113 (40.65%) had pure fungal growth, 108 (38.85%) had pure bacterial gr

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Growing use of sequencing technologies has accelerated investigation of the ocular surface microbiome, yet this environment is characterized by extremely low microbial biomass, complicating data interpretation. This review assesses current evidence linking microbial communities to ocular surface disease, discusses methodological and biological factors influencing interpretation of microbiome-disease associations, and proposes a framework in which microbial roles may be considered as drivers, modifiers, or markers.
RECENT FINDINGS: Studies across multiple ocular surface dise

OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the types of ocular manifestations observed in patients suffering from systemic sepsis including modifications in management of sepsis with ocular involvement. INTRODUCTION: Sepsis is a life-threatening condition resulting in widespread organ dysfunction, driven by dysregulated host responses to infection. In patients with altered sensorium or impaired communication, timely detection of ocular involvement becomes particularly challenging. Delays in recognition can lead to irreversible visual loss, underscoring the need for ear

BACKGROUND: According to the World Health Organization, infections, particularly sepsis, are linked to over 20% mortality worldwide and are leading cause of morbidity. A variety of infections have neuro-ophthalmic manifestations. The profile of infectious agents, clinical manifestations, severity, and prognosis of these diseases are highly heterogeneous, and it is therefore difficult to make generalized statements about management.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: Available literature with regard to individual infectious agents and their neuroophthalmic manifestations or complications was searched using

The article 'Ocular Syphilis: An Update (2019)' provides a thorough review of the challenges in diagnosing ocular syphilis. However, our research on 'Dermatological and Ocular Manifestations of Syphilis,' identifies a significant gap in both literature and clinical practice: the lack of recognition of dermatological signs during ophthalmological assessments. Ocular syphilis often mimics other conditions and can remain undiagnosed for months or years. Detecting dermatological signs, such as the characteristic palmar rash of secondary syphilis and extragenital chancres, could prompt earlier inve

For the purpose of this symposium, the term "keratitis" implies suppurative nonviral and viral keratitis. Corneal ulcers have been described in ancient literature. But even today, despite the availability of a wide range of newer antimicrobials and new diagnostic techniques, infective keratitis continues to pose a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. This article focuses on the key diagnostic clinical features of the most common organisms causing infective keratitis - bacteria, fungi, viruses, nocardia and acanthamoeba - in India. While the clinical features in some cases are fairly straightf

Rickettsial infection may cause severe systemic disease. The ocular manifestations of rickettsial infection may include sub-conjunctival hemorrhages, corneal abscesses, uveitis, optic nerve head edema, retinal vasculitis hemorrhages and infiltrates and endophthalmitis. Ocular complications may result in significant visual loss. Ocular manifestations may precede other systemic signs and symptoms and assist in clinical diagnosis. This report describes two cases with ocular involvement of rickettsial disease.

Two kinds of immunosuppression must be distinguished: malignant diseases on one hand, and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome on the other hand. Ocular infections can involve any part of the eye and they can lead to blindness. They usually attest of a systemic infection. Their treatment consist of an induction course to provide complete healing of the lesions, immediately followed by a maintenance course to prevent relapses. Retinitis are the most common posterior involvement, especially the retinitis due to cytomegalovirus and Toxoplasma gondii. Zoster ophtalmicus is the most common anterior i

ISSUES: Use of crack cocaine and associated medical complications persists globally. Some reports in medical literature describe a sight-threatening condition commonly referred to as 'crack eye' or 'crack eye syndrome'. The purpose of this review is to describe what is known about crack eye from case reports in peer-reviewed literature.
APPROACH: A structured search was completed in MEDLINE, TOXLINE, EMBASE, PsychInfo, Scopus and Biomed Central, to collect case reports and case series on corneal complications attributed to crack cocaine smoking.
KEY FINDINGS: Of 111 articles screened, 11 con

BACKGROUND: Invasive aspergillosis is often fatal. Here, we report a patient with invasive aspergillosis primarily involving the optic nerve diagnosed on autopsy.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 77-year-old female with underlying diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension presented with disc swelling of the left eye. Although mini-pulse steroid therapy improved visual acuity (VA) of the left eye, it abruptly decreased to no light perception within a month, followed by a decrease in VA of the right eye to 0.5. At referral, VA was 0.3 in the right eye, and there was no light perception in the lef
