Marginal mandibular nerve palsy is among the most common facial nerve iatrogenic injuries and has significant functional and aesthetic consequences. In a case series of four patients (n = 4) with iatrogenic and acquired marginal mandibular nerve injuries, we performed a cervical branch facial nerve (VIIc) fascicular transfer to the marginal mandibular nerve (VIIm) for late and chronic facial palsies. Pre-and post-op videos were then analysed to determine the return lower lip depression, using the Terzis lower lip score and smile index was used for objective assessment. Overall, 75% of the case

This 3-year prospective cohort observational analysis of elite amateur hockey players ranging in age from 17 to 20 years on a United States Hockey League team describes ice hockey injuries using a strict definition of injury, standardized reporting strategies, and diagnosis by a team physician. One hundred forty-two injuries were recorded for an on-ice injury rate of 9.4 per 1000 player hours. A player was 25 times more likely to be injured in a game (96.1 per 1000 player-game hours) than in practice (3.9 per 1000 player-practice hours). Game-related injuries were more frequent in the third pe

Maxillofacial/neck vascular injuries caused by improvised explosive devices IEDs or ballistics injuries are life threatening when they cause severe haemorrhage resulting in airway compromise. One should always keep in mind that the best technique used is that which saves the patient's life and not the most expensive and/or technologically advanced. Medical professionals on the scene should have the necessary experience to handle the emergency situations of airway compromise and haemorrhage control. In this instance there is only, "one to a few minutes" to clear airway obstruction and arrest ha

Pediatric cervical spine injuries (CSI) are uncommon events, but can be devastating injuries. Facial fractures have been associated with injuries to the cervical spine in children, but may be deemed isolated facial fractures and bypass the standard trauma pathway. The objective of this study is to describe the mechanisms, associated injuries and outcomes of pediatric cervical spine injuries in patients with known maxillofacial trauma at a level 1 trauma center. An analysis was performed of all patients under the age of 18 with maxillofacial trauma admissions to a single level 1 trauma center,

An epidemiological study of dental and facial trauma injuries was performed on patient presentations to the University of Otago School of Dentistry during the period 2000-2004. A total of 1287 patients were seen for dental injuries with 3473 tooth injuries. The mean age was 17.48 +/- 13.13 years (range: 2-86), the highest number of injuries occurred in the 16-25 year group with a male to female ratio of 2.01:1. Uncomplicated crown fractures were the most common injury that required treatment and the variables of age, gender, tooth type, type of injury, cause of injury, location where injury oc

Maxillofacial injuries are common sequelae in road traffic accidents. For the restrained driver, impact against the steering wheel is the most prevalent cause of injury. A sample of drivers restrained by seat belts with facial injury caused by the steering wheel was taken from data at the Accident Research Unit, University of Birmingham, UK. Two hundred and forty facial injuries occurred in 135 drivers, and these are described. Superficial contusion, laceration and nasal fractures predominated. There were 504 injuries at other body regions, and these were often caused by other vehicle componen…

BACKGROUND: Children are uniquely susceptible to craniofacial trauma because of their greater cranial mass-to-body ratio. The craniofacial injuries comprise approximately 11.3% of an overall pediatric emergency, and its etiology affects the incidence, clinical presentation, and treatment modalities, which are influenced by sociodemographic, economic, and cultural factor of the population being studied.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review to analyze the epidemiology of facial injuries in pediatric population (age range-0-16 years), divided into three age groups, i.e., group I (0-5 ye…

INTRODUCTION: The treatment of facial fractures is an integral part of the oral and maxillofacial surgical treatment spectrum. In the case of complex fractures that involve multiple levels of the facial skeleton associated with severe concomitant injuries, an individual and interdisciplinary treatment approach is needed, which requires the infrastructure of a national trauma center.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze the incidence and management of patients with complex facial fractures and considering the concomitant injury pattern.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysi

Maxillofacial injuries resulting from trauma can be a challenge to the Maxillo-Facial Surgeon. Frequent causes of these injuries are attributed to automobile accidents, physical altercations, gunshot wounds, home accidents, athletic injuries, work injuries and other injuries. Motor vehicle accidents tend to be the primary cause of most midface fractures and lacerations due to the face hitting the dashboard, windshield and steering wheel or the back of the front seat for passengers in the rear. Seatbelts have been shown to drastically reduce the incidence and severity of these injuries. In the …

BACKGROUND: Animal-related facial fractures can affect livelihoods impacting the hard and soft tissues of the face. Animal husbandry and recreational sports have close relationships with animals, which can lead to injuries equivalent to those of road traffic accidents and assaults. Our aim is to describe epidemiological trends of animal-related facial fractures in the paediatric and adult age group across South Australia.
METHODS: A retrospective review from January 2012 to January 2017 at the Women and Children's Hospital and Royal Adelaide Hospital in Adelaide. All animal-related injuries t

Motorcycle and moped injuries remain a significant cause of motor-vehicle related morbidity and mortality. There is a paucity of literature describing the skeletal injuries of moped riders and how these compare to those of motorcyclists, however. This study seeks to examine the skeletal injuries sustained in such incidents and determine if there are significant differences. Hospitalized riders injured on powered two-wheeled vehicles (PTW) between 2004 and 2007 were entered into a registry along with their presentation and clinical course. This registry was sorted by PTW type. Riders with injur

Facial soft tissue injuries encompass a broad spectrum of presentations and often present significant challenges to the craniofacial surgeon. A thorough and systematic approach to these patients is critical to ensure that the patient is stabilized, other injuries identified, and the full extent of the injuries are assessed. Initial management focuses on wound cleaning with irrigation, hemostasis, and debridement of nonviable tissue. Definitive management is dependent on the region of the face involved with special considerations for critical structures such as the globe, lacrimal apparatus, fa

To obtain objective data on the consequences of delayed treatment of facial fractures we reviewed the records of 220 patients who had suffered facial fractures concomitantly with extrafacial trauma severe enough in its own right to warrant hospital admission. Fractures studied were those of the mandible, maxilla, zygoma, and frontal sinus. Seventy-three patients fit inclusion criteria. Most injuries occurred in motor vehicle accidents. Associated extrafacial injuries were common and frequently multiple, the more serious of which generally took priority over the facial injuries in the triage sy…

Patients with maxillofacial trauma require careful evaluation due to the anatomical proximity of the maxillofacial region to the head and neck. Facial trauma can lead to life-threatening airway compromise or hemorrhage, or permanent facial deformity. Although the Advanced Trauma Life Support guidelines provide a framework for the management of trauma patients, they do not provide a detailed reference for many subtle or complex facial injuries. In addition to an overview of maxillofacial trauma pathophysiology, associated injuries, and physical examination, this review will also discuss relevan…

OBJECTIVE: In order to investigate the elements which affect operative treatment effect to patients with facial nerve injuries.
METHOD: 27 postoperative cases with facial nerve injures were analyzed.
RESULT: The results showed that the effect of treatments was more satisfactory when age was younger, the timing of operation was earlier, operative approach was right, facial nerve injury was mild, or lesion position was lower. The effect of postoperation reached House I-II degree in 21 patients (21/27), House III-IV degree in 6 patients.
CONCLUSION: According to different causes of facial nerv

Several seemingly minor traumatic pediatric injuries have potentially serious sequelae. Topics include periorbital lacerations, facial lacerations, nasal fractures, posterior oropharyngeal injuries, penetrating neck injuries, Seymour fractures, and straddle injuries. The pearls and pitfalls of the presentation and management of these injuries are reviewed in this article.
