Neoplasms of the maxilla have multiple different origins and histology, and often extend towards the infratemporal fossa, orbit, or skull base. Extensive resection may be required, often leading to poor esthetic and functional results. Usually, these lesions are removed via a transfacial approach. The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of the transoral versus transfacial approach for maxillary tumors. A single-institution retrospective study was conducted on patients with maxillary-midface tumors, treated between January 2009 and December 2019. The patients were divided into two gro

Intraosseous hemangiomas are uncommon intrabony lesions, representing approximately 0.5 to 1% of all intraosseous tumors. Their description varies from "benign vasoformative neoplasms" to true hamartomatous proliferations of endothelial cells forming a vascular network with intermixed fibrous connective tissue stroma. These commonly present as a firm, painless swelling. Intraosseous hemangiomas present more commonly in females than in males and most likely occur in the fourth decade of life. The most common etiology of intraosseous hemangioma is believed to be prior trauma to the area. They ha

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To describe the histopathologic findings in the temporal bone in patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2). The literature contains limited data on otopathology of NF2.
STUDY DESIGN: Basic science study.
METHODS: Twenty-six temporal bones from 16 patients with NF2 were examined by light microscopy. The diagnosis of NF2 was made on the basis of bilateral cochleovestibular schwannomas. Clinical information was obtained from review of the medical records.
RESULTS: The tumors were multicentric in origin in 19 of 26 (73%) ears. Typically, tumors were seen arising within

Acoustic neuroma usually presents as an unilateral tumor, seldom - bilateral and rarely in coexistence with other central nervous system neoplasms. The following paper reports such a case of a 21-year-old male patient presented with sudden deafness in left ear accompanied with tinnitus and vertigo. Symptoms started 4 weeks prior hospitalization. Their aggravation has been observed 7 days before admission to the hospital. Audiometry revealed moderate sensorineural hearing loss in left ear (for low and middle frequencies), brainstem auditory evoked potentials were absent on the left side and ENG

An association between mastocytosis and monoclonal gammopathy is a relatively rare but well recognized clinical finding. In the majority of cases, however, overt myeloma or lymphoma is not detectable morphologically. Here we describe the case of a 51 year-old male patient first presenting with paresis of the right facial nerve and the serological finding of IgM kappa paraproteinemia. The patient did not have organomegaly, lytic bone lesions, or urticaria pigmentosa-type skin lesions. Histological examination of a trephine biopsy specimen revealed the unusual coexistence of plasma cell myeloma

An elderly man presented to the acute ear, nose and throat (ENT) services with a history of intermittent, self-limiting facial nerve palsy. Full ENT examination was normal, with all cranial nerves and peripheral neurology intact. Multiple imaging modalities suggested an aggressive bony lesion, secondary to locally advanced prostate malignancy with extensive metastatic infiltration. Prostate cancer is known to preferentially metastasise to bone and has been known to cause multiple cranial nerve palsies and ophthalmoplegia. This is the first case described in the literature of metastatic prostat

Hemangiomas are tumors identifed by rapid endothelial cell proliferation in early infancy, followed by involution over time. All other abnormalities are malformations resulting from anomalous development of vascular plexuses. The malformations have a normal endothelial cell growth cycle that affects the veins, the capillaries or the lymphatics and they do not involute. Hemangiomas are the most common tumors of infancy and are characterized by a proliferating and involuting phase. They are seen more commonly in whites than in blacks, more in females than in males in a ratio of 3:1.

BACKGROUND: Large temporal plexiform neurofibroma (PNF) is an irritating problem that causes facial disfigurement. Surgical resection of PNF is the only effective way to remove the tumor as well as to improve the patient's facial appearance. However, temporal branch of the facial nerve (TBFN) in the tumor is prone to be destroyed during PNF removal. Thus, TBFN palsy is the inevitable complication after surgery and might induce other malformation and dysfunction. Therefore, the aim of this study is to reconstruct a nearly normal face contour while preserving the facial nerve function.

Calcified chondroid mesenchymal neoplasm (CCMN) is a rare, recently defined tumor characterized by mesenchymal tissue with chondroid features and calcification. It typically harbors an FN1 fusion and shows a predilection for the temporomandibular joint and distal extremities. CCMN is benign and has not been associated with malignant behavior. We present the case of a 61-year-old woman with an eight-year history of a progressively enlarging, palpable mass in the left parotid region, associated with ipsilateral hearing loss and facial palsy. Imaging studies, including computed tomography (CT) an

A 78-year-old man presented with rapidly enlarging lymph nodes in the right preauricular region and neck. Needle biopsy revealed a cytokeratin 20-positive, high-grade neuroendocrine neoplasm consistent with Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). Cross-sectional imaging disclosed a 5.2-cm intraparotid mass and extensive adenopathy in the ipsilateral cervical and submental chains (Figs 1A and 1C), without distant metastatic disease. A skin examination did not reveal a primary lesion (hence, stage IIIA, T0N1bM0). The patient's history was notable for hypertension, diet-controlled diabetes type II, high cho

T-cell lymphomas are infrequently encountered in the head and neck area, with the most common subtype being Extranodal NK/T cell lymphoma, nasal type (ENKTL-NT). ENKTL-NT shows a predilection for midline facial structures presenting with ulcerative destructive lesions, whereas palatal involvement is one of the most prominent signs from the oral cavity. Herein, we describe a case of a 76-year-old Greek man with nasal obstruction and an extensive painful necrotic ulcer with ragged borders on the left distal portion of the soft palate and palatine tonsil of 4-months duration. INTRODUCTION: «Man-in-the-barrel» syndrome refers to diplegia of the upper extremities in which mobility of the head and lower limbs is preserved. Brachial plexitis that presents as «man-in-the-barrel» syndrome is an unusual manifestation of giant cell arteritis. We report a case of C5-C6 plexitis as part of the clinical features of a patient with giant cell arteritis.
CASE REPORT: A 70-year-old male with a two-month history of weight loss, headache, facial pain and jaw claudication, associated with a persistent elevation of acute phase reactants and bilateral brachial plexopathy, with no evi

Atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor (AT/RT) of the brain is a highly malignant (CNS WHO grade 4) embryonal neoplasm. Majority of AT/RTs occur in the posterior fossa although supratentorial examples may also be observed. Pathologically, the tumor typically consists of cells with rhabdoid morphology that are immunoreactive for synaptophysin, EMA, and variably for GFAP. Diagnosis is typically confirmed by observing loss of INI-1 or BRG-1 expression from the nucleus of the tumor cells. Little is known regarding the embryogenesis of AT/RT. We therefore present here a case of supratentorial AT/RT in a

Sinonasal inverted papilloma (SIP) is a benign neoplasm of the nasal cavity and sinuses, with a certain risk of malignant transformation. The malignant transformation of SIP is uncommon, and the invasion of malignant tumors into the facial skin is even rarer. This report describes the case of a male patient in his 20 s who underwent two endoscopic resections for SIP in the nasal cavity within a 6-year period. Histopathological analysis during the second surgery revealed the malignant transformation of the tumor into squamous cell carcinoma. Despite receiving conventional postoperative radiothe

Spindle Cell Carcinoma (SpCC), also known as Sarcomatoid Carcinoma, is a rare and peculiar biphasic malignant neoplasm that occurs mainly in the upper aero-digestive tract, mostly in larynx. SCC accounts for 3% of all squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) in the head and neck region. It is a rare variant of SCC which shows spindled or pleomorphic tumour cells simulating a true sarcoma. We present a case report of SpCC nasal cavity in a 50-year-old female patient, presented with intermittent epistaxis from left nasal cavity. On physical examination, the patient had an ulcero-exophytic type of mass in

Endocrine sequelae are among the most frequently reported complications in childhood cancer survivors, affecting 40 to 60% of these patients during adult life. Most of these complications are the result of cranial radiation therapy for brain or facial tumor, lymphoma or leukemia. The present review describes the main endocrine disturbances observed in this population, including disorders of hypothalamic-pituitary axis, especially the frequently observed growth hormone deficiency and disorders of puberty, thyroid and parathyroid dysfunction, obesity and metabolic syndrome, alterations in glucos
