In clinical practice the presence of a positive family history of diabetes mellitus is one of the criteria to perform a glucose screening test. However it has been shown not to be always reliable. OBJECTIVE: Family members usually become involved during the course of care for a chronic illness. This study identified the diabetic adult's perceived supportive family member(s) and analyzed whether family participation was associated with the diabetic adults' level of metabolic control.
METHODS: A telephone survey of 131 diabetic adults was conducted from a family practice residency office asking patients to identify family members participating in their diabetes care and to enumerate specific support activities. A significant portion of children referred for psychiatric treatment have been sexually abused. One of the most difficult symptom manifestations to treat in young children is the management of anger. The authors describe the surgery carried out for 11 carotid body tumours (CBTs) that were found in three generations of a Greek family. Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is mainly characterised by hypo- or agammaglobulinaemia of late onset, usually discovered in the second decade of life. In individuals CVID is associated with a variable impairment of cellular immunity and the susceptibility to microbial infection may vary as well. CVID is described in a mother and a son who suffered from serious bacterial infections. In addition, minor immunological test abnormalities of apparently healthy first degree relatives are described.

McArdle disease is reported in three generations of a consanguineous Druze family. The diagnosis was established on the basis of a failure of a rise in lactate in the ischemic forearm exercise test, glycogen accumulation in muscle fibers and the lack of myophosphorylase by histochemical and biochemical studies. The inheritance pattern is compatible with an autosomal recessive mode. Examination of family members revealed a marked variability in the clinical findings and functional status. This is the first reported case of the disorder in this ethnic group.

The authors conducted a systematic investigation of nightmares in consecutive admissions to an inpatient unit at a Veteran Administration hospital for a six-month period. Fifteen of the 41 nightmare sufferers identified their nightmares as post-traumatic.
