Vitamin D receptor gene polymorphism as an important modifier of positive family history related breast cancer risk.

The association between vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphisms and diseases such as breast cancer, prostate cancer and osteoporosis has been extensively investigated during recent years. To date, several polymorphisms have been found in the VDR gene. In this Finnish case-control study, comprising 483 breast cancer patients and 482 healthy population controls, we investigated the association between altered breast cancer risk and two polymorphisms in the 3' end of the gene detectable with ApaI and TaqI restriction enzymes. A statistically significant difference was observed in the ApaI gen

EEG low-voltage alpha and alpha power in African American young adults: relation to family history of alcoholism.

BACKGROUND: Several studies support an association between having a low-voltage EEG and alcohol dependence; however, it is not clear whether this measure represents a risk marker or is a result of years of heavy drinking. The present study's aims were to investigate the prevalence of low-voltage alpha EEG variants in African American young adults who have not yet developed alcohol dependence and to test for associations between low-voltage alpha (LVA) EEG, alpha power, and a family history of alcohol dependence. METHODS: Clinical ratings and spectral characteristics of the EEG, collected usin

[Factors related to access to family dentists and regular dental checkups--results of oral health examination of an adult population].

In February 2000, we examined the oral health status of 578 government employees (males 408, females 170). We also asked them to complete questionnaires on oral health. The following results were obtained. Of the total sample, 39.2% had a family dentist. There were significantly more women, and older workers, who had a family dentist. The reasons to visit family dentists were "treatment (75.9%)," "prevention (14.4%)," and "regular checkups (8.8%)." Workers who had family dentists had more filled teeth and fewer present teeth than those without family dentists, and the difference was significan

Family-related correlates of sexually transmitted disease and barriers to care: a pilot study of pregnant African American adolescents.

This study explored associations between family-related measures and sexually transmitted disease (STD) history among 170 pregnant African American adolescent females, 14 to 20 years of age, attending prenatal care clinics in a large urban area of the South. Measures of low family support and infrequent mother-daughter communication were significant bivariate correlates of having at least one STD. Mother-daughter communication about preventing acquired immune deficiency syndrome remained significant in a multivariate model. The study also explored barriers to STD care-seeking behavior and foun

Experiences and expectations of the new genetics in relation to familial risk of breast cancer: a comparison of the views of GPs and practice nurses.

BACKGROUND: Advances in genetics may change the practice of medicine in many ways. Ascertaining practitioners' perceptions about managing the risk of familial breast cancer can give an insight into the current and expected impact on general practice to inform relevant education. Little is known about the practice nurses' (PNs) views of the new genetics in comparison with those of the GP. OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to describe and compare the views of GPs and PNs on their experiences and expectations of the new genetics in relation to managing familial risk of breast cancer. METHOD: A questionna

Manganese homeostasis in Bacillus subtilis is regulated by MntR, a bifunctional regulator related to the diphtheria toxin repressor family of proteins.

The Bacillus subtilis yqhN gene encodes a metalloregulatory protein distantly related to the Corynebacterium diphtheriae diphtheria toxin repressor (DtxR). While DtxR mediates the iron-dependent repression of iron uptake, we demonstrate that yqhN (herein renamed mntR) encodes a manganese modulated regulator of manganese transport. An mntR mutant strain is sensitive to both manganese and cadmium, suggesting that the transport of these metals is derepressed. We selected Tn10 insertions that suppress the Mn(II) sensitivity of the mntR mutant or that increase the Cd(II) tolerance of wild-type cell

Clinical features of fatal familial insomnia: phenotypic variability in relation to a polymorphism at codon 129 of the prion protein gene.

Fatal Familial Insomnia is a hereditary prion disease characterized by a mutation at codon 178 of the prion protein gene cosegregating with the methionine polymorphism at codon 129 of the mutated allele. It is characterized by disturbances of the wake-sleep cycle, dysautonomia and somatomotor manifestations (myoclonus, ataxia, dysarthria, spasticity). PET studies disclose severe thalamic and additionally cortical hypometabolism. Neuropathology shows marked neuronal loss and gliosis in the thalamus, especially the medio-dorsal and anterior-ventral nuclei, olivary hypertrophy and some spongiosis

Xenoxins, a family of peptides from dorsal gland secretion of Xenopus laevis related to snake venom cytotoxins and neurotoxins.

Three new, highly similar peptides from the skin secretion of Xenopus laevis have been purified and analyzed by mass spectrometry and Edman degradation. The 66-amino-acid peptides, termed xenoxin-1, -2, and -3, contain 8 cysteines and show similarity to snake venom cytotoxins and short neurotoxins. Assignment of two out of four disulfide bonds suggests a tertiary structure similar to that of cytotoxins and short neurotoxins. A cDNA encoding pre-xenoxin-1 was isolated from a X. laevis skin cDNA library. The nucleotide sequence predicts the synthesis of a precursor with a signal peptide followed

Modulation of natural and interleukin-2-induced tumour-cytolytic activities by the members of a protein family related to beta-thromboglobulin.

A preparation of three C-terminal fragments of the platelet protein beta-thromboglobulin was previously described to have immunomodulatory properties on phagocytic cells. One of the components is obviously identical to the recently described neutrophil-activating peptide 2 (NAP-2). In further investigations on this protein preparation (called factor C) we are able to show an additional influence on the tumour-cytolytic activities of mononuclear cells. Total neutralization of the factor C effect, by treating a factor C preparation with specific monoclonal antibody C24 prior to application in ce

Serum and erythrocyte magnesium levels in junior high school students: relation to blood pressure and a family history of hypertension.

Serum and erythrocyte magnesium concentrations (S-Mg, E-Mg) were measured in 380 Japanese junior high school students, and the relationship to blood pressure and a family history of hypertension were studied. Systolic blood pressure was higher in the subjects with a positive family history of hypertension [FH(+)] than in those with a negative family history [FH(-)], whereas E-Mg was lower in the FH(+) group than in the FH(-) group with a significant different in boys. Furthermore, in the FH(+) group, systolic blood pressure was significantly higher in the subjects with lower S-Mg and E-Mg than

Family and community pressure, obesity-related behaviours, and psychological wellbeing among female adolescents with overweight or obesity: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent obesity has physical, psychological and social consequences. Family and community influences can be important in determining the eating behaviour, body image and emotional health of adolescents. Few qualitative studies have investigated female adolescents' own perception of family and community related pressure around their weight. METHODS: This qualitative exploratory study used semi-structured interviews to investigate these experiences among 30 female adolescents aged 12-19 years (mean 16.3 years) with overweight or obesity. Weight status was classified against the W

Pandemic-Related Black Family Well-Being Across North Carolina County Tiers: An Exploratory Cross-Sectional Study.

This exploratory cross-sectional study examined whether pandemic-related family well-being responses differed across North Carolina's 2021 county economic tiers among 178 Black parents. Survey responses were linked to county tier and included reported stress, emotional symptoms, food hardship, self-rated health, sleep change, work and parenting disruption, and parent-child interaction items. Primary analyses used the Kruskal-Wallis and chi-square tests; within-tier correlations and tier-stratified linear probability models were used for supplementary and descriptive purposes. Respondents acros

Relational inequalities and loneliness: How diverse family forms shape loneliness among heterosexual and LGBTQ+ adults in later life.

OBJECTIVES: Loneliness is a major concern in later life, yet disparities between heterosexual and LGBTQ+ older adults remain insufficiently understood. This study examined how families of origin and families of choice relate to loneliness among adults aged 50 +, and whether these associations differ by sexual orientation. DESIGN: Data were collected via online surveys in Israel and compared two groups: LGBTQ+ and heterosexual adults aged 50 +. PARTICIPANTS: The analytic sample included 948 participants. MEASUREMENTS: Loneliness was assessed using the brief UCLA Loneliness Scale. Participant

NIMA-related kinase family at the nexus of skeletal development and congenital arthrogryposis: coordinated regulation of cell cycle and ciliary dynamics.

BACKGROUND: The NIMA-related kinase (NEK) family comprises a group of serine/threonine kinases that play pivotal roles in cell cycle control. Emerging evidence has demonstrated that loss-of-function (LOF) mutations in NEK family members, particularly NEK1 and NEK9, cause skeletal and joint developmental abnormalities. RESULTS: This review synthesizes clinical, genetic, and functional evidence from patient-based studies, cell models, and animal experiments to elucidate the pathogenic mechanisms. Loss-of-function of these two kinases can disrupt cell cycle progression through distinct mechanism

Genotype-phenotype divergence in pediatric familial Mediterranean fever across two closely related populations: a Türkiye-Azerbaijan comparison.

BACKGROUND: Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is the most common monogenic autoinflammatory disease and has a high prevalence in Türkiye. Despite shared ethnic ties, pediatric FMF in Azerbaijan remains poorly characterized. This study aimed to systematically compare the clinical, laboratory, and genetic characteristics of pediatric FMF patients from Türkiye and Azerbaijan to determine whether common ancestral origins result in uniform disease expression. METHODS: This retrospective bicentric study enrolled pediatric FMF patients aged 0-18 years who met the Eurofever/PRINTO criteria and had ≥
