Regional airway fat distribution and its association with brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome severity in pugs with varying body condition.

Obesity is a recognised risk factor for brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) in pugs; however, the mechanisms linking obesity to BOAS remain unclear. Previous veterinary studies have primarily focused on tongue fat, with limited evaluation of other airway regions. This study aimed to investigate the associations between body condition score (BCS) and regional airway fat, and their relationship with BOAS functional grades. Client-owned pugs undergoing BOAS assessment and pre-operative head and neck computed tomography (CT) were enrolled. Fat volumes within the tongue (T), pharynx (

Association between body fat distribution and female stress urinary incontinence: a cross-sectional study with the NHANES 2011-2018.

BACKGROUND: The android to gynoid ratio (A/G ratio) reflects the distribution of abdominal fat relative to gluteofemoral fat and may affect stress urinary incontinence (SUI) by increasing pelvic floor load due to elevated intra-abdominal pressure. However, its direct relationship with SUI remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to explore whether a higher A/G ratio is linked to increased SUI prevalence in American women aged ≥20 years. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis used data from 5,309 women aged ≥20 years in the 2011-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES

Association of predicted lean body mass and fat mass with prognosis in patients with heart failure preserved ejection fraction.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that body composition influences the prognosis of heart failure patients; however, the prognostic value of lean body mass and fat mass in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association of lean body mass index and fat mass index with the prognostic outcomes in patients with HFpEF. METHODS: We performed a post hoc analysis of data from the Treatment of Preserved Cardiac Function Heart Failure with an Aldosterone Antagonist (TOPCAT) trial to assess the relationship betwe

Preliminary Reference Values for Plantar Fat Pad Thickness Beneath the Metatarsal Heads and Its Relationship with Body Mass Index.

Introduction and Objectives: The thickness of the plantar fat pad (PFP) beneath the metatarsal heads may play a protective role in preventing forefoot disorders such as metatarsalgia. However, reference values for plantar adipose tissue thickness in this region among healthy individuals are currently unavailable. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine, by means of ultrasound imaging, the thickness of the PFP beneath the five metatarsal heads and to analyze its possible relationship with body mass index (BMI). Materials and Methods: Thirty-five young adults (17 males and 18 females)

Quantification of Visceral Fat at the L5 Vertebral Body Level in Patients with Crohn's Disease Using T2-Weighted MRI.

The umbilical or L3 vertebral body level is often used for body fat quantification using computed tomography. To explore the feasibility of using clinically acquired pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for visceral fat measurement, we examined the correlation of visceral fat parameters at the umbilical and L5 vertebral body levels. We retrospectively analyzed T2-weighted half-Fourier acquisition single-shot turbo spin echo (HASTE) MR axial images from Crohn's disease patients who underwent MRI enterography of the abdomen and pelvis over a three-year period. We determined the area/volume of

Nonlinear relationship between cardiometabolic index and bone mineral density in U.S. adults: the mediating role of percent body fat.

BACKGROUND: Both lipid metabolism and obesity are crucial factors in osteoporosis, influencing the relevance of the cardiometabolic index (CMI), a new body fat index incorporating obesity and lipid metrics. Our study aims to explore the relationship between CMI and lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) and the mediating role of body fat percentage. METHODS: Utilizing the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 2011 to 2018, we conducted a cross-sectional analysis. We employed multiple linear regression models, subgroup analyses, generalized additive models (GAM),

Aetiology of Type 2 diabetes in people with a 'normal' body mass index: testing the personal fat threshold hypothesis.

Weight loss in overweight or obese individuals with Type 2 diabetes (T2D) can normalize hepatic fat metabolism, decrease fatty acid oversupply to β cells and restore normoglycaemia. One in six people has BMI <27 kg/m2 at diagnosis, and their T2D is assumed to have different aetiology. The Personal Fat Threshold hypothesis postulated differing individual thresholds for lipid overspill and adverse effects on β-cell function. To test this hypothesis, people with Type 2 diabetes and body mass index <27kg/m2 (n = 20) underwent repeated 5% weight loss cycles. Metabolic assessments were carried out a

Impact of Prenatal Exposure to Maternal Diabetes and High-Fat Diet on Postnatal Myocardial Ketone Body Metabolism in Rats.

Infants exposed to diabetic pregnancy are at higher risk of cardiomyopathy at birth and early onset cardiovascular disease (CVD) as adults. Using a rat model, we showed how fetal exposure to maternal diabetes causes cardiac disease through fuel-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction, and that a maternal high-fat diet (HFD) exaggerates the risk. Diabetic pregnancy increases circulating maternal ketones which can have a cardioprotective effect, but whether diabetes-mediated complex I dysfunction impairs myocardial metabolism of ketones postnatally remains unknown. The objective of this study was to

Quantitative Muscle Analysis in FSHD Using Whole-Body Fat-Referenced MRI: Composite Scores for Longitudinal and Cross-sectional Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is a rare, debilitating disease characterized by progressive muscle weakness. MRI is a sensitive assessment of disease severity and progression. We developed a quantitative whole-body (WB) musculoskeletal MRI (WB-MSK-MRI) protocol analyzing muscles in their entirety. This study aimed to assess WB-MSK-MRI as a potential imaging biomarker providing reliable measurements of muscle health that capture disease heterogeneity and clinically meaningful composite assessments correlating with severity and more responsive to change

The Body Fat Percentage Rather Than the BMI Is Associated with the CD4 Count among HIV Positive Japanese Individuals.

Maintenance of the cluster of differentiation 4 (CD4) positive lymphocyte count (CD4 count) is important for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive individuals. Although a higher body mass index (BMI) is shown to be associated with a higher CD4 count, BMI itself does not reflect body composition. Therefore, we examined the association of body weight, body composition and the CD4 count, and determined the optimal ranges of CD4 count associated factors in Japanese HIV positive individuals. This cross-sectional study included 338 male patients treated with antiretroviral therapy for ≥12 mont

Cooked Adzuki Bean Reduces High-Fat Diet-Induced Body Weight Gain, Ameliorates Inflammation, and Modulates Intestinal Homeostasis in Mice.

Adzuki bean is widely consumed in East Asia. Although the positive effects of its biologically active ingredients on obesity have been confirmed, the role of whole cooked adzuki bean in preventing obesity and the relationship between the effects and gut microbiota remain unclear. Mice were fed either a low-fat diet (LFD) or high-fat diet (HFD) with or without 15% cooked adzuki bean for 12 weeks. Cooked adzuki bean significantly inhibited weight gain and hepatic steatosis, reduced high levels of serum triacylglycerol (TG), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), an

Association between body mass index, waist circumference, and relative fat mass with the risk of first unprovoked venous thromboembolism.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Obesity defined by body mass index (BMI) is independently associated with venous thromboembolism (VTE). Abdominal obesity, defined by waist circumference, is a predictor of cardiovascular events. Recently, relative fat mass (RFM) was proposed as a marker of cardiovascular risk. We assessed the role of three different measures of obesity to predict unprovoked VTE in a longitudinal study. METHODS AND RESULTS: Moli-sani is a prospective cohort study carried out in the general population of the Molise region, Italy. A total of 23,538 individuals (48% men, age 55.4 years) enro

Polyunsaturated fatty acids as modulators of fat mass and lean mass in human body composition regulation and cardiometabolic health.

It is now recognized that the amount and type of dietary fat consumed play an important role in metabolic health. In humans, high intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) has been associated with reductions in cardiovascular disease risk, improvements in glucose homeostasis, and changes in body composition that involve reductions in central adiposity and, more recently, increases in lean body mass. There is also emerging evidence, which suggests that high intakes of the plant-based essential fatty acids (ePUFAs)-n-6 linoleic acid (LA) and n-3 α-linolenic acid (ALA)-have a greater impact o

A Single Day of Excessive Dietary Fat Intake Reduces Whole-Body Insulin Sensitivity: The Metabolic Consequence of Binge Eating.

Consuming excessive amounts of energy as dietary fat for several days or weeks can impair glycemic control and reduce insulin sensitivity in healthy adults. However, individuals who demonstrate binge eating behavior overconsume for much shorter periods of time; the metabolic consequences of such behavior remain unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of a single day of high-fat overfeeding on whole-body insulin sensitivity. Fifteen young, healthy adults underwent an oral glucose tolerance test before and after consuming a high-fat (68% of total energy), high-energy (78% grea

Too fat to fit through the door: first evidence for disturbed body-scaled action in anorexia nervosa during locomotion.

To date, research on the disturbed experience of body size in Anorexia Nervosa (AN) mainly focused on the conscious perceptual level (i.e. body image). Here we investigated whether these disturbances extend to body schema: an unconscious, action-related representation of the body. AN patients (n = 19) and healthy controls (HC; n = 20) were compared on body-scaled action. Participants walked through door-like openings varying in width while performing a diversion task. AN patients and HC differed in the largest opening width for which they started rotating their shoulders to fit through. AN pat

Acetic acid upregulates the expression of genes for fatty acid oxidation enzymes in liver to suppress body fat accumulation.

We investigated the effect of acetic acid (AcOH) on the prevention of obesity in high-fat-fed mice. The mice were intragastrically administrated with water or 0.3 or 1.5% AcOH for 6 weeks. AcOH administration inhibited the accumulation of body fat and hepatic lipids without changing food consumption or skeletal muscle weight. Significant increases were observed in the expressions of genes for peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARalpha) and for fatty-acid-oxidation- and thermogenesis-related proteins: acetyl-CoA oxidase (ACO), carnitine palmitoyl transferase-1 (CPT-1), and unco

Dietary intake in HIV-infected men with lipodystrophy: relationships with body composition, visceral fat, lipid, glucose and adipokine metabolism.

Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for HIV-infection is associated with lipodystrophy, insulin resistance, increased prevalence of disturbances in glucose tolerance and diabetes, hyperlipidemia and increased cardiovascular risk. Whether dietary intake influences total body fat, visceral fat, insulin resistance, glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism and circulating inflammatory markers in HIV-infected subjects with lipodystrophy is unclear and the focus of this report. We examined the dietary intake of 106 male HIV-infected HAART-recipients with lipodystrophy, enrolled in a study of th
