Prenatal Exposure to Organophosphorus Pesticides and Preschool ADHD in the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study.

Prenatal organophosphorus pesticide (OPP) exposure has been associated with child attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in agricultural communities and those that are exposed to residentially applied insecticides. To examine this association in populations that are exposed primarily through diet, we estimate the associations between prenatal OPP exposure and preschool ADHD in the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa), and describe modification by paraoxonase 1 (PON1) gene variants. We used participants from the MoBa Preschool ADHD Sub-study (n = 259 cases) and a rand

Father involvement in the care of children born small and sick in Rwanda: Association with children's nutrition and development.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about father's involvement in the care of children born with perinatal risk factors. This study aimed to underst … ild development outcomes. Children's nutritional status were directly measured. Only children whose fathers were living in the home were included in the sample. Bivariate analyses were conducted using Fisher's exact test and Wilcoxon Rank Sum test. RESULTS: A total of 236 children aged 24-47 months were included in this study, 66.4% were born preterm or …

W. Dean Warren, MD, FACS, Father of Selective Shunts for Variceal Hemorrhage: Lessons Learned.

Dr Dean Warren was born in 1924 and died prematurely from cancer in 1989. He was a man of uncommon intelligence, wit, collegiality, integrity, honesty, and a true leader in American surgery. In 1966, he and his colleagues (Drs Zeppa and Fomon) presented a new concept for surgical shunts to control variceal hemorrhage while maintaining portal perfusion or hepatopetal blood flow. He termed this new shunt the distal splenorenal shunt (DSRS), which was the first selective shunt invented. The DSRS selective shunt was a brilliant improvement over the total shunt concept proposed by Nicolai Eck and w

Resemblance and clustering of mother's and father's psychopathology levels among Chinese parents of schoolchildren with psychiatric disorders.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have assessed the characteristics of spousal psychopathologies among parents of schoolchildren with and without psychological disorders (PD) in China. METHODS: Parental symptoms were measured using the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) in 275 mothers and 278 fathers of 298 schoolchildren with PDs diagnosed in a population survey and in 825 mothers and 834 fathers of 894 schoolchildren without PDs as a 1:3 matched comparison group. Spousal GHQ scores were compared. Childhood PD type, presence of childhood comorbidities, and multiple parental and family characteristics …

Medical conditions of Omer Seyfettin (1884-1920), the father of Turkish short stories, enshrined as a mystery.

Born in 1884 in Balıkesir, Turkey, Ömer Seyfettin was a leading figure among modern Turkish short story writers whose death in 1920 at the age of 36 led to long-term speculations about his fatal illness. In order to pay homage to his memory in the centennial of his death and to shed light on his later medical condition, this paper seeks to reexamine his last days from a medico-historical perspective. Our findings indicate that there was a notable decline in his health occurring after 1917 when he was confined to social isolation. A carbuncle was diagnosed in his posterior neck when he was 35-y

An illustration of collaborative care with a focus on the role of fathers in Maudsley Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults (MANTRA).

The aim of this case study is to illustrate the importance of collaborative care as part of Maudsley Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults (MANTRA). Mothers are often at the foreground of providing support within the family. However, fathers have the potential to play a profound role. In this paper, we describe a patient with anorexia nervosa treated with the MANTRA. The formulation of this case included autistic spectrum traits in both the father and daughter leading to social isolation. We describe how the family members were engaged into treatment and how paternal support was used to promot…

Vulnerability or resilience to early substance use among adolescents at risk: The roles of maltreatment and father involvement.

Although research has indicated that maltreated children are at higher risk of adolescent substance use, it remains unclear whether the type and timing of maltreatment affect the likelihood of adolescent substance use. Research has also found father involvement to be a potential protective factor against adolescent substance use, but the role of quality vs. quantity of father involvement as well as gender differences in the effects of father involvement on substance use among at-risk adolescents have not been studied. The current study adds value to the existing literature by filling these gap

A pilot evaluation of 'Working Out Dads': promoting father mental health and parental self-efficacy.

AIM: Approximately one in 10 fathers experience mental health difficulties in the early years of parenting, yet there is a dearth of evidence-based interventions to promote fathers' mental health at this time. Therefore, the aims of this study were: (1) to obtain preliminary data on the short-term changes in mental health symptoms and parenting self-efficacy for fathers of young children (aged 0-4 years) participating in Working Out Dads (WOD) and (2) to explore fathers' experiences of participation in WOD. METHOD: The sample consisted of 57 fathers who had at least one child aged between 0 a…

A qualitative exploration of mothers' and fathers' experiences of having a child with Klinefelter syndrome and the process of reaching this diagnosis.

Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is a common genetic condition that is currently under-diagnosed. The phenotype is broad, with physical, medical and psychosocial features ranging from mild to severe. When a child is diagnosed with KS, the parents may spend months to years searching for a diagnosis. This study used a qualitative methods approach to explore parents' experiences of having a child with KS and receiving a diagnosis. Fifteen semistructured one-to-one in-depth interviews were conducted to explore their experiences and views. The interviews were then transcribed, coded and thematically analy

FATHER RESIDENCE AND ADOLESCENT PROBLEM BEHAVIOR: ARE YOUTH ALWAYS BETTER OFF IN TWO-PARENT FAMIIES?

This study uses data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health to examine combinations of father residence and closeness which have received minimal examination but involve significant numbers of children. Our findings lead to a number of conclusions. First, adolescents who are close to their nonresident fathers report higher self-esteem, less delinquency, and fewer depressive symptoms than adolescents who live with a father with whom they are not close. Second, adolescents living with a father with whom they are not close have better grades, less violence and less substance us…

Fathers' views and understanding of their roles in families with a child with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia: an interpretative phenomenological analysis.

This study explored how fathers of children diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) perceived and understood the roles they had within their family over the course of their child's illness and treatment. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with five fathers. Transcripts were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). The major themes that emerged were: adjusting to the diagnosis; the experience of maternal gate-keeping; striving for normalization; experiences of giving and receiving support. Overall, the fathers perceived themselves as having signi…

A father and son with mental retardation, a characteristic face, inv(12), and insertion trisomy 12p12.3-p11.2.

A male patient with mental retardation (MR) and mild facial features was shown by high-resolution G-banding to have pericentric inversion of chromosome 12 with an unknown segment inserted into the long arm of the inverted chromosome [46,XY,inv(12)(pter-->p11.2::q14.1-->p11.2::?::q14.1-->qter)]. Both the inverted chromosome 12 and clinical manifestations were transmitted to his son. Karyotypes of the propositus' parents were normal. Studies with fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) in both the propositus and his son revealed that the extra segment was derived from 12p. Further FISH mapping

Case report: natural transmission of an AZFc Y-chromosomal microdeletion from father to his sons.

Y-chromosomal microdeletions, associated with oligozoospermia or azoospermia, are usually de novo deletions in the affected patients. We report here the rare case of an affected father who transmitted a Y-chromosomal microdeletion to at least two of his three sons naturally and who also fathered a daughter. The extent of the deletion, which was determined with new STS-primers and covers 3.5 Mb, was identical in the father and his azoospermic sons. To determine any possibly modifying influence of other genes involved in spermatogenesis, we analysed two polymorphisms of the DAZL gene, the autoso

Familial mutation in the testis-determining gene SRY shared by an XY female and her normal father.

In humans, mutations in the testis-determining gene SRY result in XY sex reversal with pure gonadal dysgenesis (PGD). However, only about 10-15% of the cases of PGD can be explained by mutations within the SRY open reading frame, suggesting the existence of other sex-determining genes. Although SRY is known to bind and bend DNA, its target and mode of action remain elusive. Here, we describe a novel mutation in SRY at codon 127, resulting in a tyrosine (Y) to phenylalanine (F) substitution in the protein. This sequence variant was found not only in the XY female patient but also in her father,

Revision of the diagnosis of T-zone lymphoma in the father of a patient with autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome type II.

Autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome (ALPS) is a disease of childhood characterized by typical clinical and laboratory findings. Here we describe an adult patient presenting with lymph node enlargement and splenomegaly. Pathological examination of an adenopathy supported the diagnosis of malignant T-zone lymphoma. The patient was treated accordingly. 3 years later his child was diagnosed with ALPS. Therefore the diagnosis of the father's disease was reconsidered. Review of the slides and functional tests led to the diagnosis of ALPS in both father and son. ALPS should be considered as a pos

Early-onset benign limb-girdle myopathy with contractures and facial involvement affecting a father and daughter.

We describe a father and daughter with early-onset benign limb-girdle myopathy and contractures of elbows and hands, resembling Bethlem disease. Muscle biopsy showed a pattern of dystrophy with non specific mitochondrial changes. In both patients there was unusual facial muscle weakness. We discuss the nosologic position of Bethlem myopathy and suggest that facial involvement may be an additional feature of this disease.

Father's occupational exposure to radiation and the raised level of childhood leukemia near the Sellafield nuclear plant.

The first indications that childhood leukemia rates may be raised near the Sellafield nuclear plant in West Cumbria, England, came from largely anecdotal evidence in a television program "Windscale: The Nuclear Laundry" shown during 1983. During subsequent years, various epidemiological studies have investigated the claim in more detail. Geographical analyses of childhood leukemia incidence in the northern region and mortality in England and Wales using routinely available data made the first contribution. As a result, it was confirmed that leukemia rates in the area, particularly the neighbor

The whistling face syndrome, or craniocarpotarsal dysplasia. Report of two cases in a father and son and review of the literature.

Two cases of "whistling face syndrome" with the typical manifestations in the face, hands, and feet in a father and son are presented. From studying them over a 3-year period and from reviewing 46 reported cases, we conclude that (a) hand and foot deformities do not improve spontaneously with growth and better results are achieved by early surgery, (b) decreased intermaxillary distance contributed more than intercommissural distance to feeding and anesthetic difficulties in our patients, and (c) thickened and contracted joint capsules and myopathic changes are thought to form the basic patholo
