The cost of fear: Impairments of decision-making in specific phobia.

BACKGROUND: Decision-making processes may play a pivotal role in the etiology and maintenance of specific phobia. However, empirical evidence is limited. This study examined whether decision-making is only impaired in presence of fear-related stimuli or whether general impairments exist but are more pronounced in the presence of fear-related stimuli. Further, we examine which components of the decision-making process might be impaired. METHODS: We examined a spider phobia group (SP, n = 109) relative to matched healthy controls (HC, n = 81) using a virtual decision game. To tap the approach-a…

The Role of the Orbitofrontal Cortex in the Regulation of Fear Coping Strategies.

Under threats, individuals exhibit freezing behavior and prepare for active coping. The ability to flexibly shift between freezing and activ … al orbital area (MO) and the lateral orbital area (LO) have distinct functions in the regulation of fear. Here, we updated the existing rodent literature studying the function of the OFC, with a particular focus on the MO and the LO in different coping strategies of animals. By examining the role of the OFC in the mediation of defensive coping strategi …

The impact of multiple exposures and movement on the fear response of poultry.

Fear tests are a common research method to assess the affective state of an animal. This study aimed to assess: 1) the impact of repeated exposure to fear tests on fear response and, 2) how the addition of movement to fear stimuli during a novel object test impacts bird fear response. Over two trials, a total of 3,600 Ross 308 birds (1800 birds/trial) were raised until 42 days of age. At 23d, 30d, and 37d, three fear tests were performed, novel object, human approach, and response to observer tests. The novel object test was split into three movement treatments, stationary, intermittent, and c…

Avoidance and fear day by day in social anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Theories assert that avoidance maintains maladaptive anxiety over time, yet a clear prospective test of this effect in the day-by-day lives of people with social anxiety disorder (SAD) is lacking. METHOD: We used intensive longitudinal data to test prospective relationships between social fear and social avoidance in 32 participants with SAD who reported on a total of 4256 time points. RESULTS: Results suggested that avoidance strongly predicted future anxiety, but only in a minority of people with SAD. Relationships between anxiety and avoidance varied considerably across individ…

A fear conditioned cue orchestrates a suite of behaviors in rats.

Pavlovian fear conditioning has been extensively used to study the behavioral and neural basis of defensive systems. In a typical procedure, a cue is paired with foot shock, and subsequent cue presentation elicits freezing, a behavior theoretically linked to predator detection. Studies have since shown a fear conditioned cue can elicit locomotion, a behavior that - in addition to jumping, and rearing - is theoretically linked to imminent or occurring predation. A criticism of studies observing fear conditioned cue-elicited locomotion is that responding is non-associative. We gave rats Pavlovia…

Influence of diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus on fear of childbirth.

INTRODUCTION: Considering the relationship between Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and maternal and perinatal adverse outcomes, it's pertinent to investigate whether this diagnosis is a predictor of fear of childbirth. As there is little data about the fear of childbirth in Brazil, it´s necessary to understand better the population, and this way the authors can identify factors that influence this fear as well as propose public health policies to treat it. OBJECTIVE: The main goal was to compare the prevalence of fear of childbirth between the groups of low-risk pregnancy and gestational diabet…

Neuropsychobiology of fear-induced bradycardia in humans: progress and pitfalls.

In the last century, the paradigm of fear conditioning has greatly evolved in a variety of scientific fields. The techniques, protocols, and analysis methods now most used have undergone a progressive development, theoretical and technological, improving the quality of scientific productions. Fear-induced bradycardia is among these techniques and represents the temporary deceleration of heart beats in response to negative outcomes. However, it has often been used as a secondary measure to assess defensive responding to threat, along other more popular techniques. In this review, we aim at pavi…

Impairment in acquisition of conditioned fear in people with depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Depression is one of the primary global public health issues, and there has been a dramatic increase in depression levels among young people over the past decade. The neuroplasticity theory of depression postulates that a malfunction in neural plasticity, which is responsible for learning, memory, and adaptive behavior, is the primary source of the disorder's clinical manifestations. Nevertheless, the impact of depression symptoms on associative learning remains underexplored. METHODS: We used the differential fear conditioning paradigm to investigate the effects of depressive sym…

Fear of Cancer Recurrence in Adult Survivors of Childhood Cancer.

IMPORTANCE: Fear of cancer recurrence is common among survivors of adult-onset cancer and associated with increased distress, functional impairment, and health care utilization. However, little is known about the prevalence and risk factors of fear of cancer recurrence among adult survivors of childhood cancer who are also at high risk for subsequent malignant neoplasms. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the prevalence of and risk factors for clinically significant fear of cancer recurrence in adult survivors of childhood cancer. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional investigation…

Rapid Processing of Invisible Fearful Faces in the Human Amygdala.

Rapid detection of a threat or its symbol (e.g., fearful face), whether visible or invisible, is critical for human survival. This function is suggested to be enabled by a subcortical pathway to the amygdala independent of the cortex. However, conclusive electrophysiological evidence in humans is scarce. Here, we explored whether the amygdala can rapidly encode invisible fearful faces. We recorded intracranial electroencephalogram (iEEG) responses in the human (both sexes) amygdala to faces with fearful, happy, and neutral emotions rendered invisible by backward masking. We found that a short-…

The role of dispositional mindfulness in the fear-avoidance model of pain.

OBJECTIVE: The fear-avoidance model of pain posits that a painful stimulus is interpreted through pain catastrophizing, which leads to negative downstream cognitions, emotions, and behaviors that shape the experience of pain. As dispositional mindfulness is associated with less catastrophizing and pain, some researchers have suggested incorporating mindfulness into the fear-avoidance model. Across two studies, we empirically tested dispositional mindfulness as a stand-alone component within the fear-avoidance model of pain. METHODS: Two independent, online cross-sectional surveys (Ns = 362 an…

Stress and sex-dependent effects on conditioned inhibition of fear.

Anxiety and stress-related disorders are highly prevalent and are characterized by excessive fear to threatening and nonthreatening stimuli. Moreover, there is a large sex bias in vulnerability to anxiety and stress-related disorders-women make up a disproportionately larger number of affected individuals compared with men. Growing evidence suggests that an impaired ability to suppress fear in the presence of safety signals may in part contribute to the development and maintenance of many anxiety and stress-related disorders. However, the sex-dependent impact of stress on conditioned inhibitio…

Fear conditioning as a pathogenic mechanism in the postural tachycardia syndrome.

Despite its increasing recognition and extensive research, there is no unifying hypothesis on the pathophysiology of the postural tachycardia syndrome. In this cross-sectional study, we examined the role of fear conditioning and its association with tachycardia and cerebral hypoperfusion on standing in 28 patients with postural tachycardia syndrome (31 ± 12 years old, 25 females) and 21 matched controls. We found that patients had higher somatic vigilance (P = 0.0167) and more anxiety (P < 0.0001). They also had a more pronounced anticipatory tachycardia right before assuming the upright posit…

The influence of sleep on fear extinction in trauma-related disorders.

In Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), fear and anxiety become dysregulated following psychologically traumatic events. Regulation of fear and anxiety involves both high-level cognitive processes such as cognitive reattribution and low-level, partially automatic memory processes such as fear extinction, safety learning and habituation. These latter processes are believed to be deficient in PTSD. While insomnia and nightmares are characteristic symptoms of existing PTSD, abundant recent evidence suggests that sleep disruption prior to and acute sleep disturbance following traumatic events bot…
