Evaluation of a Binary Classification Approach to Detect Herbage Scarcity Based on Behavioral Responses of Grazing Dairy Cows.

In precision grazing, pasture allocation decisions are made continuously to ensure demand-based feed allowance and efficient grassland utilization. The aim of this study was to evaluate existing prediction models that determine feed scarcity based on changes in dairy cow behavior. During a practice-oriented experiment, two groups of 10 cows each grazed separate paddocks in half-days in six six-day grazing cycles. The allocated grazing areas provided 20% less feed than the total dry matter requirement of the animals for each entire grazing cycle. All cows were equipped with noseband sensors and

Prevalence of Parent-Reported Problematic Eating Behaviors and Skills at 8-24 Months of Age in Infants Born at Less Than 34 Weeks Gestation.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe the evolution and prevalence of parent-reported problematic feeding behaviors and eating skills in infants born prior to 34 weeks at the time of eating solid foods between 8 and 24 months of age, and to explore the associations between problematic feeding and the impact on the parent and family. METHOD: Parents of eligible children (N = 35) completed an online survey when their child was 8, 10, 12, 18, and 24 months corrected age. The survey included the Pediatric Eating Assessment Tool (PediEAT), Child Oral and Motor Proficiency Scale (ChOMP…

Flamingos use their L-shaped beak and morphing feet to induce vortical traps for prey capture.

Flamingos feature one of the most sophisticated filter-feeding systems among birds, characterized by upside-down feeding, comb-like lamellae, and a piston-like tongue. However, the hydrodynamic functions of their L-shaped chattering beak, S-curved neck, and distinct behaviors such as stomping and feeding against the flow remain a mystery. Combining live flamingo experiments with live brine shrimp and passive particles, bioinspired physical models, and 3D CFD simulations, we show that flamingos generate self-induced vortical traps using their heads, beaks, and feet to capture agile planktonic p

Functional morphology of the pharyngeal teeth of the ocean sunfish, Mola mola.

Many fish use a set of pharyngeal jaws in their throat to aid in prey capture and processing, particularly of large or complex prey. In this study-combining dissection, CT scanning, histology, and performance testing-we demonstrate a novel use of pharyngeal teeth in the ocean sunfish (Mola mola), a species for which pharyngeal jaw anatomy had not been described. We show that sunfish possesses only dorsal pharyngeal jaws where, in contrast to their beaklike oral teeth, teeth are recurved spikes, arranged in three loosely connected rows. Fang-like pharyngeal teeth were tightly socketed in the sk

Projections from the anterior basomedial and anterior cortical amygdaloid nuclei to melanin-concentrating hormone-containing neurons in the lateral hypothalamus of the rat.

Melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) is involved in the regulation of feeding behavior as well as in goal oriented behaviors, and MCH-containing neurons are distributed mainly in the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA). The anterior basomedial nucleus (BMA) and anterior cortical nucleus (CoA) of the amygdala form part of a circuit involved in processing olfactory, gustatory and visceral information, and the BMA-LHA and CoA-LHA pathways are suggested to be implicated in the control of feeding behavior. However, it is still unknown whether or not MCH-containing LHA neurons are under the direct influe…

What Fish Can Teach Us about the Feeding Functions of Postcranial Muscles and Joints.

Studies of vertebrate feeding have predominantly focused on the bones and muscles of the head, not the body. Yet, postcranial musculoskeleta … ranial interface in other vertebrate groups, and how that role changes (or not) with morphology and feeding behaviors. Such studies can expand our understanding of muscle function, as well as the evolution of vertebrate feeding behaviors across major transitions such as the invasion of land and the emergence of jaws.

Behavioral transcriptomic effects of triploidy and probiotic therapy (Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, and Lactococcus mixture) on juvenile Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha).

Aquaculturists use polyploid fish to maximize production albeit with some unintended consequences including compromised behaviors and physiological function. Given benefits of probiotic therapies (e.g., improved immune response, growth, and metabolism), we explored probiotic supplementation (mixture of Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, and Lactococcus), to overcome drawbacks. We first examined fish gut bacterial community composition using 16S metabarcoding (via principal coordinate analyses and PERMANOVA) and determined probiotics significantly impacted gut bacteria composition (p = 0.001). Long-term feeding on powdered food causes hyperglycemia and signs of systemic illness in mice.

AIMS: Dietary habits are crucial factors affecting metabolic homeostasis. However, few animal experiments have addressed the effects of long-term feeding with soft food on parameters reflecting systemic health. MAIN METHODS: Using mice, we compared the effects of short (3 days) and long (17 weeks from weaning) feeding periods between powdered food and normal pellet food on the levels of blood glucose, serum levels of insulin, catecholamines, and corticosterone, blood pressure, and/or social interaction behaviors. In addition, the effects of a human glucagon-like peptide-1 analog, liraglutide

The presence of mahi-mahi at multi-predator feeding aggregations modifies striped marlin attack behaviour.

Terrestrial multi-species predator feeding aggregations (MPFAs) are characterized by contest competition, but scramble competition is likely more common at MPFAs in pelagic waters. However, empirical investigations are rare. Aerial video was used to estimate abundances of striped marlin and mahi-mahi alongside their attack and capture rates and spatio-temporal positioning as they competed at prey schools. Mahi-mahi had higher capture efficiencies than marlin, and the presence of marlin did not affect mahi-mahi predatory behaviour. Conversely, the presence of mahi-mahi in smaller abundances may

Influence of blood meal on the responsiveness of olfactory receptor neurons in antennal sensilla trichodea of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti.

In female Aedes aegypti L. mosquitoes, a blood meal induces physiological and behavioral changes. Previous studies have shown that olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) housed in grooved peg sensilla on the antennae of Ae. aegypti down-regulate their sensitivity to lactic acid, a key component driving host-seeking behavior, which correlates with observed changes in the host-seeking behavior of this species. In the present study, we performed electrophysiological recordings from the most abundant antennal sensillum type, sensilla trichodea. Our results indicate that the response spectra of ORNs con

English- and Spanish-speaking Latina mothers' beliefs about food, health, and mothering.

Parent beliefs regarding food, health, and child feeding behaviors among Latinos have not been well-documented. A series of eight focus groups were conducted with English-speaking and Spanish-speaking low-income Latina mothers of preschoolers to investigate their beliefs regarding how food and food preparation are related to their children's health and to their own roles as mothers. Systematic content analysis using NUDIST 6 revealed seven themes discussed by the focus groups. Integration of these themes revealed three major areas of consideration: (1) a lack of connection between the domains …

A Clip-Based Dairy Cow Behavior Recognition Method Integrating Temporal Modeling and Behavioral Priors.

Accurate dairy cow behavior recognition is important for health monitoring, welfare assessment, and early warning in smart livestock farming. However, recognizing fine-grained behaviors such as feeding, drinking, and rumination remains difficult in real barns because of occlusion, complex backgrounds, subtle motion changes, and class imbalance. This study proposes a behavior recognition method that integrates temporal modeling and behavioral priors. The Contrastive Language-Image Pre-training (CLIP) visual encoder is used as the feature extraction backbone, while two temporal adapters are intr

Abnormal heart rate response during newborn sucking behavior study: subsequent sudden infant death syndrome with cardiac conduction abnormality.

This report concerns a four-month-old white female infant who exhibited abnormal feeding behavior and EKG irregularities during a newborn sucking behavior study. The immediate post-birth history showed an irregular heart rate on two occasions, but a cardiac consultation elicited no unusual findings. During sucrose sucking conditions, the heart rate increased with a beat-to-beat variation of 50 beats per minute, noted to be due to premature atrial beats. At 39 days, an EKG showed a marked sinus tachycardia of 156, a PR interval of 0.08, QRS of 0.05 and a QT of 0.26. The infant was diagnosed as …

Feeding live or processed black soldier fly larvae to slow-growing broilers impacts their behaviour differently.

In response to increasing public concerns and retailer demands, the broiler production industry and legislative authorities are looking for measures to improve broiler welfare. Black soldier fly (BSF) larvae could be used in broiler diets as these insects contain bioactive compounds that may improve broiler health. The underlying pathways of these bioactive compounds to support broiler health are not fully understood yet. However, experimental evidence indicates that BSF larvae as part of laying hen diets can lead to improved disease resistance and immune response in those chickens, based on i

Intersection between Eating Disorders and Obesity in Youth: Implications for Treatment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Eating disorders among children and adolescents occur in all body sizes and must be properly identified and treated across settings for optimal health outcomes. This review summarizes considerations for behavioral, pharmacological, and surgical obesity treatment and eating disorder risk. RECENT FINDINGS: Obesity and eating disorders share many common risk factors. Yet adolescents with obesity and eating disorders are underrepresented in research studies and often remain undiagnosed in medical practice despite presenting with more severe symptoms. There is evidence for reduc

Safety of ephedra and related anorexic medications.

BACKGROUND: The increasing incidence of obesity, anorexia and bulimia has resulted in an increased interest in anorexic medications that can modify human eating behaviors. History and medical research is replete with consequences of addressing behavioral disorders with pharmacologic approaches to intervention in the absence of cognitive therapies such as self-efficacy counseling, which we and others have shown to be extremely effective at modifying behaviors previously thought to be resistant to such treatment. This paper looks at some of the ramifications of using anorexic medications, includ
