Effect of Kangaroo Mother Care on Duration of Phototherapy on Neonatal Jaundice: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (NNH) is a common morbidity in the neonatal period, especially in the preterm and low-birth-weight babies. Low-birth-weight babies receiving phototherapy do not receive kangaroo mother care (KMC), which may hamper their weight gain and establishment of breast-feeding. The authors investigated the effect of KMC on duration of phototherapy in neonates admitted to a level III nursery with neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. Fifty neonates with gestational age of 30 to 40 wk, birth weight 1001-1999 g, and requiring phototherapy were randomized. Control group received photother

[Risk factors for diarrheal disease in infants: a case-control study].

This study aims to identify risk factors associated with episodes of diarrhea among infants under six months from the Southern Zona da Mata region in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil. This was a case-control study nested in a cohort. A total of 397 infants were studied, with 239 infants classified as cases and 158 as controls (1.5:1). Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals were calculated. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify predictive factors for the outcome, showing that lack of piped water in the house (OR = 3.60; 95% CI 1.49-8.74) and duration of breastfeeding less

Scintigraphy for evaluating early aspiration after oral feeding in patients receiving prolonged ventilation via tracheostomy.

OBJECTIVE: In tracheotomised patients the incidence of aspiration is difficult to determine because investigators often apply different criteria. In this study a scintigraphic method was used to visualise feeding aspiration directly and the results were compared with clinical evidence of aspiration. DESIGN: Prospective study in difficult-to-wean patients with tracheostomy. SETTING: Respiratory ICU. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study population consisted of 62 consecutive patients (16 females, age: 64.1+/-11.1 years). All patients were tracheotomised and had previously been long-term ventilated

The effect of breast milk and vanilla odor on duration of transition from gavage to oral feeding in premature infants.

Premature infants are at risk of various physical complications if they do not receive oral feeding and weight gain, which can affect their health and well-being. This study aimed to compare the effect of the smell of breast milk and vanilla extract on the duration of transition from gavage feeding to oral feeding in premature infants in the neonatal intensive care units of hospitals affiliated with Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. This clinical trial was conducted on 60 premature infants who were randomly assigned to three groups: breast milk smell stimulation during gavage feeding, van

Short versus long feeding interval for bolus feedings in very preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: There is presently no certainty about the ideal feeding intervals for preterm infants. Shorter feeding intervals of, for example, two hours, have the theoretical advantage of allowing smaller volumes of milk. This may have the potential to reduce the incidence and severity of gastro-oesophageal reflux. Longer feeding intervals have the theoretical advantage of allowing more gastric emptying between two feeds. This potentially provides periods of rest (and thus less hyperaemia) for an immature digestive tract. OBJECTIVES: To determine the safety of shorter feeding intervals (two ho

Ovarian cancer in a former asbestos textile factory worker: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Prelacteal feeding is one of the major harmful newborn feeding practices and is top on the list of global public health concerns. The practice deprives newborns of valuable nutrients and protection of colostrum and exposes them to preventable morbidity and mortality. Studying the prevalence and factors influencing the prelacteal feeding practice of mothers will help program managers and implementers to properly address broad major public health problems. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the prevalence of prelacteal feeding practices and its associated factors among mother-

Feeding difficulties in the first days of life: findings on upper gastrointestinal series and the role of the videofluoroscopic swallowing study.

BACKGROUND: Feeding difficulties in the newborn period are a common indication for an upper gastrointestinal (UGI) series. OBJECTIVE: To review the radiological findings in infants with feeding-related difficulties, with no other medical problems, and to evaluate the role, if any, of the videofluoroscopic swallowing study (modified barium swallow, MBSW). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all the UGI and MBSW studies performed at our institution over a 5-year period in infants under 1 month of age. We found a total of 77 patients referred for feeding-related problems. RESULT

Posthospitalization breastfeeding patterns of moderately preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about how preterm infants make the transition from breast-feeding and bottle feeding to exclusive breast-feeding in the weeks following hospital discharge. This study examined the breastfeeding patterns of preterm infants born at 30 to 35 weeks' gestation over a 4-week period following hospitalization. METHOD: Daily feeding diaries were completed by 53 mothers. These diaries were used to describe the proportion of breast milk feeds and feeds directly at breast. RESULTS: Infants received a high proportion of breast milk feeds, with 60% receiving breast milk exclusi

Genetically modified plant-derived feed materials: results of official monitoring in Poland.

INTRODUCTION: Highly efficient animal rearing would be impossible without the use of high-protein feed. In Europe the main source of feed protein has become soybean meal imported from South America, where the majority of it is genetically modified. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of genetically modified (GM) plant material in feed on the Polish market. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study material consisted of feed materials and compound feed samples collected as part of the Official Feed Control Plan in 2018-2024. Methods recommended for use in official testing by the Europea

Bayesian model for tracing Salmonella contamination in the pig feed chain.

Salmonella infections in pigs are in most cases asymptomatic, posing a risk of salmonellosis for pork consumers. Salmonella can transmit to pigs from various sources, including contaminated feed. We present an approach for quantifying the risk to pigs from contaminations in the feed chain, based on a Bayesian model. The model relies on Salmonella surveillance data and other information from surveys, reports, registries, statistics, legislation and literature regarding feed production and pig farming. Uncertainties were probabilistically quantified by synthesizing evidence from the available in

Effect of behavioural change communication through women development army on optimal complementary feeding practice among children aged 6-23 months in Southwest Ethiopia: a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Optimal development and growth in children are primarily determined by dietary practice during the first 24 months of life. However, in low-income countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, ensuring adequate nutrition and maternal nutritional knowledge are challenging. As a result, it is a major public health issue in Ethiopia. Therefore, it is essential to address feeding practices and knowledge gaps through behavior change communication. This study assessed the effect of behaviour change communication through the women's development army on complementary feeding practices among

Effects of food insecurity risk on infant feeding confidence and practices during the COVID-19 pandemic and its waves.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath changed numerous social and economic environments. Food insecurity rates rose with potential negative ramifications for infant feeding methods. The relationship between food insecurity and infant feeding practices since the onset of the pandemic is not yet fully understood. We examined these relationships in a cohort of infants born during the onset and aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of infants enrolled from birth into the COVID-19 Mother-Baby Outcomes (COMBO) study and bo…
