Fetal development of the enteric nervous system of transgenic mice that overexpress the Hoxa-4 gene.

Megacolon occurs in neonatal and adult transgenic mice that overexpress the Hoxa-4 gene. Abnormalities, which are restricted to the terminal colon of these mice, include a hypoganglionosis, abnormal enteric ganglia with a structure appropriate for extra-enteric peripheral nerve and not the enteric nervous system (ENS), and gaps in the longitudinal muscle occupied by ganglia. To investigate the developmental origin of these abnormalities, we analyzed the development of the pelvis and terminal colon in Hoxa-4 transgenic mice. Morphological abnormalities were detected as early as E13. These inclu

A histological study of the developing condylar cartilage of the fetal mouse mandible using coronal sections.

The first indication of cartilage formation was detected on day 14.5 of pregnancy in close connection to the ossifying mandible. A separated blastema was never observed. Thus the findings support the concept that the condylar cartilage develops from already differentiated cells, not from primary undifferentiated mesenchymal cells. Moreover, endochondral bone formation started on day 16 of pregnancy. Although the condylar cartilage basically undergoes the same processes of endochondral bone formation as the long bone, many hypertrophic chondrocytes may survive and are released into the primary

The effect of low amniotic pressure without oligohydramnios on fetal lung development in a rabbit model.

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to examine fetal lung development in reduced intraamniotic pressure without amniotic fluid loss. STUDY DESIGN: A circular portion of uterine wall measuring 1 cm in diameter was excised while the chorionic and amniotic membranes were left intact at the twenty-third day of gestation in New Zealand White rabbits. The chorionic and amniotic membranes herniated spontaneously through the defect. RESULTS: Amniotic pressure was significantly reduced after herniation. Lung weight/body weight ratios at term were significantly reduced in experimental fetuses compared with con

Regional development of Langerhans cells and formation of Birbeck granules in human embryonic and fetal skin.

The regional development of Langerhans cells (LC) and the formation of Birbeck granules (BG) were examined in human embryonic and fetal skin. Samples were obtained from multiple anatomic sites and stained with anti-CD36, anti-CD1a, and anti-HLA-DR antibody as well as Lag antibody specifically reactive to BG and some vacuoles of human LC. In the first trimester, CD36+ dendritic epidermal cells were identified before the appearance of CD1a+ cells and Lag+ cells. Some of the former co-expressed HLA-DR antigens but not CD1a antigens. In the second trimester, regional variations in LC development w

Development and persistence of catecholaminergic neurons in cultured explants of fetal murine vagus nerves and bowel.

Transient catecholaminergic (TC) cells have been found to appear in the vagal pathway and bowel of fetal mice and rats. It has been proposed that these cells are migrating vagal crest-derived precursors of enteric neurons that lose their catecholaminergic properties when they terminally differentiate. In the current experiments, segments of fetal mouse gut were explanted before (day E9) TC cells or any neural markers could be detected in situ. Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-immunoreactive neurons developed in vitro in 4/12 such explants; therefore, cells with a catecholaminergic potential are prese

[The sensory cells of the fetal vomeronasal organ in the human. A contribution to the variability of their differentiation and rudimentary development].

Serial cranial sections of seven human fetuses between 11 and 18 weeks were studied using Palmgren's silver impregnation technique. The vomeronasal organ revealed receptor cells in four cases. This is the first demonstration of functional elements in the vomeronasal organ in man. They may also be present in old-world monkeys. It is evident that the human vomeronasal organ is frequently present in man, but differentiation of the organ and its individual constituents shows considerable variation.

The natural history of gastroschisis during fetal life: development of the fibrous coating on the bowel loops.

Patients with gastroschisis have a paraumbilical defect of the anterior abdominal wall through which bowel loops protrude. These bowel loops are edematous and covered by a fibrous coating. The moment of occurrence of gastroschisis as well as the development of the fibrous coating are unknown. This prompted an investigation of 26 human embryos and fetuses with gastroschisis at various developmental stages (crown-rump length 25-240 mm) and two stillborn fetuses (gestational age 30 weeks) with gastroschisis, as well as resected material from ten newborns (gestational age 33-40 weeks) operated for

The relationship of fetal plasma protein concentration and hemoglobin level to the development of hydrops in rhesus isoimmunization.

Fetoscopic samples of pure fetal blood were obtained at 18 to 25 weeks' gestation from seven hydropic and 10 nonhydropic fetuses affected by rhesus isoimmunization, and the fetal plasma albumin, plasma total protein, and hemoglobin concentrations were determined. All fetuses with sonographic evidence of hydrops had a hemoglobin of 3.8 gm/dl or less, whereas all but one of those without hydrops had a hemoglobin greater than 4.0 gm/dl. The plasma total protein was less than 2 standard deviations below the mean of the normal range in all hydropic fetuses and in six of 10 of those without hydrops.

Fetal gastric and colonic implants in syngeneic and allogeneic mice developing typical inflammatory changes.

Implants of fetal stomach and colon under the kidney capsule of syngeneic, and H-2 compatible and H-2 incompatible allogeneic mice were examined histologically at different time intervals after the procedure. According to the time of implantation typical inflammatory changes were seen in syngeneic stomach and colon implants, which resembled changes seen in chronic atrophic gastritis and chronic ulcerative colitis. Immunofluorescence studies showed that the host developed antibodies against fetal antigens, while there was no evidence for cellular immune response to fetal syngeneic antigens with

Histological study of the fetal development of the human acetabulum and labrum: significance in congenital hip disease.

Seventy-four acetabula from a total of 140 normal human fetuses, obtained from abortions and deaths in the prenatal period, were used. The fetuses ranged from 9.1 to 40 cm in crown-rump length and are believed to be between 12 weeks and term. Acetabula were decalcified embedded in paraffin or celloidin, sectioned, and stained using conventional histologic techniques. Sections from the superior one-quarter of the acetabulum were examined for the initial appearance and later spread of osseous tissue. Throughout the fetal period bone was present only in the floor of the acetabulum and did not ext

Morphometric study of the fetal development of the human hip joint: significance for congenital hip disease.

Hip joints (280) from 140 human fetuses, obtained from abortions and deaths in the perinatal period, were studied. The fetuses ranged from 8.7 to 40 cm in crown-rump length and are believed to be between 12 and 42 weeks in age. The joints were dissected, morphology inspected, and measurements taken of the depth and diameter of the acetabulum, the diameter of the femoral head, length and width of the ligament of the head, the neck-shaft, and torsion angles of the proximal femur. Regression models were fitted to determine which would best predict the growth pattern. Multivariate analysis of vari

Fetal heart rate patterns in infants in whom necrotizing enterocolitis develops: a preliminary report.

Perinatal changes in fetal heart rate (FHR) were monitored in infants in whom necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) developed. Eleven of 16 monitoring strips indicated severe FHR changes consistent with perinatal hypoxia, two indicated mild changes, two indicated tachycardia alone, and only one was normal. Severe variable FHR decelerations indicating umbilical cord compression occurred in four cases, persistent late FHR decelerations occurred in two cases, persistent late and severe variable FHR decelerations occurred in two cases, prolonged bradycardia occurred in two cases, and bradycardia with pe

The role of paternal obesity in fetal development, pregnancy complications, and childhood outcomes: a systematic review.

The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease theory proposes that environmental influences during early life have long-term effects on health outcomes. Although maternal factors have been extensively studied, the impact of paternal obesity on fetal development and pregnancy outcomes has received limited attention. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effects of paternal obesity on fetal development and pregnancy complications within the DOHaD framework. English-language studies published between 2020 and 2025 were searched in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library …

Prenatal Aflatoxin B1 Exposure: A Review of Pathogenesis and Impact on Fetal Skeletal Development and Ossification.

Prenatal exposure to aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) poses a significant risk to fetal development and is associated with reduced birth weight in humans. Experimental studies consistently show that AFB1 induces fetal abnormalities, with skeletal malformations and ossification defects being the most common. However, the specific impact of AFB1 on fetal osteogenesis remains unclear. Given this knowledge gap, this study aimed to review the existing literature concerning the pathogenesis of AFB1 and its potential influence on bone development. The primary mechanisms implicated in AFB1's impact on bone include…

The Effects of Maternal Iron Deficiency and Iron Deficiency Anemia on the Developing Fetal and Neonatal Brain.

Iron is an essential micronutrient for fetal and postnatal neurodevelopment because of its role in critical neurologic processes, including myelination, monoamine neurotransmitter metabolism, neuronal adenosine triphosphate generation and structural development, and epigenetic modification of synaptic plasticity genes and networks. All these processes begin in the fetal stage and are at risk when the fetus is iron-deficient. Pregnancy places a tremendous negative strain on maternal iron status because of the expansion of her blood volume, coupled with placental and fetal iron demand. Fetal iro

MRI-based spectral analysis of fetal brain gyrification in typical development and in lissencephaly and polymicrogyria.

Cortical gyrification is a key marker of fetal brain development and is typically assessed qualitatively on ultrasound or MRI. While previous quantitative approaches have characterized gestational trajectories in typically developing (TD) fetuses, only a few studies have investigated cortical malformations such as lissencephaly and polymicrogyria. Spectral analysis, which characterizes signals by their frequency content, has been successfully applied to study gyrification in neonates and adults but has not yet been explored prenatally. This study aimed to apply spectral analysis to routine fet

Using Biodesign Methodology for the Development and Initial Validation of a Novel Fetal Shunt: The Vortex Shunt.

Fetal lower urinary tract obstruction (LUTO) is a severe malformation that is associated with significant neonatal and pediatric morbidity and mortality risk. Existing fetal shunts aimed at bypassing the obstruction and improving neonatal survival have significant limitations, primarily shunt dislodgement. Repeat in-utero invasive shunt replacement procedures are associated with maternal, fetal, and obstetric risks, highlighting a clinical need for a novel fetal shunt with improved performance. We used a biodesign approach to develop and validate a novel fetal shunt, the Vortex shunt, which ca
