Complete Chain of the First Global Kidney Exchange Transplant and 3-yr Follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Global Kidney Exchange (GKE) offers an opportunity to expand living renal transplantation internationally to patients without financial means. These international pairs are entered into a US kidney exchange program that provides long-term financial support in an effort to identify opportunities for suitable exchanges for both these international pairs and US citizens. OBJECTIVE: While the promise of GKE is significant, it has been met with ethical criticism since its inception in 2015. This paper aims to demonstrate the selection process and provide >3 yr of follow-up on the first…

Assessing essential needs expressed by breast and gynecological cancer patients with food insecurity.

Food insecurity poses a challenge for cancer patients, who must maintain adequate nutrition during treatment. This study analyzed data from 295 low-income participants in the NCI-funded Food to Overcome Outcome Disparities trial to examine the overlap between degree of food security and other essential needs. Patients with very low food security reported greater financial toxicity from cancer care and lived in more disadvantaged areas than those with low food security. Financial, supportive service, and housing needs were highly expressed among participants, particularly those with very low fo

Organ procurement in Munich: financial and organizational aspects.

The Transplantation Center at the University of Munich is like all other German centers financially supported by the Insurance Companies via a non-profit organization (Kuratorium für Heimdialyse e.V.). The financial modalities are based on the arrangement that the Insurance Companies pay a certain amount for each transplantation to the non-profit organization. This institution, in cooperation with the University, uses this money to cover all extra expenses arising in the field of organ procurement as well as clinical transplantation (providing additional staff, equipment, etc). This model of a

The economic consequences of autistic spectrum disorder among children in a Swedish municipality.

In this study, the societal economic consequences of autistic spectrum disorder were investigated using a sample of parents of children identified with the disorder and living in a Swedish municipality. Cost information was collected using a postal questionnaire that was developed through experiences gained from an earlier study. Using conservative assumptions, the additional societal cost due to the disorder was estimated to be approximately 50,000 annually per child. Parents of children with the disorder spent an average of about 1000 hours per year additionally caring for and supporting the

Effects of Interventions to Improve Access to Financial Services for Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Enterprises in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: An Evidence and Gap Map.

Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) account for most firms in most economies, particularly in developing nations, and are key contributors to job creation and global economic development. However, the most significant impediment to MSME development in low- and middle-income countries is a lack of access to both investment and working capital financing. Due to a lack of essential track record, appropriate collateral, and credit history, MSMEs are frequently denied business loans by traditional lending institutions. In addition, MSMEs face institutional, structural, and non-financ

This study examined whether caregivers of male or female patients with epilepsy differ in perceived burden, social support, and coping mechanisms. In a cross-sectional design conducted at a tertiary neuropsychiatric hospital, 60 caregivers (30 per group) completed the Family Burden Interview Schedule (FBIS), the Social Support Questionnaire (SSQ), and the Ways of Coping Questionnaire (WCQ). Caregivers of female patients reported greater financial strain and more pronounced impacts on mental and physical health, yet they also perceived higher levels of social support. In contrast, caregivers of

From pollution to prosperity: Investigating the Environmental Kuznets curve and pollution-haven hypothesis in sub-Saharan Africa's industrial sector.

Drivers of environmental change and policy processes are pushing the sub-Saharan African region to do more in the struggle against climate change as the region suffers most from climate change impact. To this end, this study investigates how the interaction effects of a sustainable financing model in energy use influence carbon emissions in Sub-Saharan African economies. It is based on the theory that energy consumption is determined by increased economic financing. Panel data analysis of thirteen countries from 1995 to 2019 is used to explore the interaction effect on CO2 emissions, taking a

Financial education for HIV-vulnerable youth, orphans, and vulnerable children: A systematic review of outcome evidence.

PROBLEM: According to Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the World Health Organization, HIV is the leading cause of youth mortality in Africa, and the second cause of death among young people worldwide. Global commitments to reverse the HIV epidemic will only be achieved if strategies prioritize children and youth. Relevant evidence reviews found mixed evidence that HIV prevention may be addressed through economic strengthening activities such as financial education for youth. There was some evidence related to the potential for plural interventions that include both finan
