A new automated chilled adult release system for the aerial distribution of sterile male tsetse flies.

Tsetse eradication continues to be a top priority for African governments including that of Senegal, which embarked on a project to eliminate Glossina palpalis gambiensis from the Niayes area, following an area-wide integrated pest management approach with an SIT component. A successful SIT programme requires competitive sterile males of high biological quality. This may be hampered by handling processes including irradiation and the release mechanisms, necessitating continued improvement of these processes, to maintain the quality of flies. A new prototype of an automated chilled adult releas

Signalling networks orchestrating the development of Drosophila indirect flight muscles.

Indirect flight muscles (IFMs) of Drosophila melanogaster are among the most structurally ordered and metabolically demanding tissues in the animal kingdom. Importantly, IFMs comprise two anatomically and mechanistically distinct muscle groups: the dorsal longitudinal muscles (DLMs) and the dorsoventral muscles (DVMs). Their ability to sustain high-frequency, stretch-activated oscillations depends not only on specialised sarcomeric architecture but on multilayered signalling networks that coordinate lineage specification, myoblast proliferation, fibre patterning, mechanotransduction, metabolic

Response and Plasticity of a Cleaning Mutualism Following Short Term Reductions in Habitat Availability.

Species interactions, facilitated by animal behaviour, drive global biodiversity, yet species interactions are being disrupted by environmental change across ecosystems. On coral reef ecosystems, cleaning mutualisms where a 'cleaner' species removes parasites from a 'client' species at dedicated cleaning 'stations' on live coral are directly impacted by ongoing declines in live coral due to environmental change. Using cleaning mutualisms as a model system, we hypothesised that reduced habitat availability will result in a decline in mutualism-associated behavioural expression. Through an in si

Identification of Enterococcus spp. from food sources by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry and characterization of virulence factors, antibiotic resistance, and biofilm formation.

The continuous detection of multi-drug-resistant enterococci in food source environments has aroused widespread concern. In this study, 198 samples from chicken products, animal feces, raw milk, and vegetables were collected in Japan and Egypt to investigate the prevalence of enterococci and virulence characterization. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) was employed for species identification and taxonomic analysis of the isolates. The results showed that the rates of most virulence genes (efaA, gelE, asa1, ace, and hyl) in the Japanese

Emissions of NMVOC and H2S from field-applied manure measured by PTR-TOF-MS and wind tunnels.

Field application of animal manure is a source of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) emission that contribute to air pollution and odor nuisance in local surroundings. In this study the non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) and H2S emission and odor activity dynamics over time after field application of pig and cattle manure were investigated. Furthermore, three different application techniques, trailing hoses, trailing shoes, and trailing hoses applying manure 20 cm above canopy, was compared. With a flexible system combining dynamic chambers and Proton-Trans

Terrestrial stress analogs for spaceflight associated immune system dysregulation.

Recent data indicates that dysregulation of the immune system occurs and persists during spaceflight. Impairment of immunity, especially in conjunction with elevated radiation exposure and limited clinical care, may increase certain health risks during exploration-class deep space missions (i.e. to an asteroid or Mars). Research must thoroughly characterize immune dysregulation in astronauts to enable development of a monitoring strategy and validate any necessary countermeasures. Although the International Space Station affords an excellent platform for on-orbit research, access may be constr

The effect of solvent and matrix combinations on the analysis of bacteria by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry.

The ability to rapidly identify the taxonomic class of the wide variety of microorganisms involved in human and animal disease is becoming increasingly important, especially with the increasing development of resistance to the antibiotics which form the main defence against them. A number of groups have recognised the utility of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry MALDI-TOF in the analysis of these microorganisms. However, no consistent methodology has been developed which is in general use. In particular the use of different solvent extraction systems

Ocular Risks of Spaceflight and a Path to Prevention: Targeting Mitochondria-ER Stress With Low-Intensity Ultrasound.

The cornea is highly susceptible to spaceflight-induced stress, compromising visual acuity and mission safety. Here, we identify endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and mitochondrial dysfunction as key mediators of corneal degeneration under simulated microgravity (SMG). SMG exposure led to corneal epithelial thinning, reduced nerve fiber density, and delayed wound healing. Multi-omics profiling and cellular assays revealed aberrant ER-mitochondrial crosstalk, characterized by excessive formation of mitochondria-associated membranes (MAMs) and activation of stress signaling pathways. Notably, treatment

Down-regulation of GATA1-dependent erythrocyte-related genes in the spleens of mice exposed to a space travel.

Secondary lymphoid organs are critical for regulating acquired immune responses. The aim of this study was to characterize the impact of spaceflight on secondary lymphoid organs at the molecular level. We analysed the spleens and lymph nodes from mice flown aboard the International Space Station (ISS) in orbit for 35 days, as part of a Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency mission. During flight, half of the mice were exposed to 1 g by centrifuging in the ISS, to provide information regarding the effect of microgravity and 1 g exposure during spaceflight. Whole-transcript cDNA sequencing (RNA-Seq

Surgical problems in space: an overview.

Terrestrial experience indicates that surgical emergencies may cause significant morbidity in space, and may present unique problems. Microgravity physiologic changes that may increase susceptibility to, and complications from, injury include fluid redistribution and diuresis, bone demineralization, and immune system alterations. Conventional diagnostic tests may be unavailable or unreliable--e.g. the radiologic finding of "air under the diaphragm", which conventionally indicates perforation of an air-containing hollow viscus, such as the stomach, with a gravity-dependent rising of gas in the

Histomorphometric analysis of rat skeleton following spaceflight.

Male Sprague-Dawley rats were placed in orbit for 7 days aboard the space shuttle. Bone histomorphometry was performed in the long bones and lumbar vertebrae of flight rats and compared with data derived from ground-based control rats. Trabecular bone mass was not altered during the 1st wk of weightlessness. Strong trends were observed in flight rats for decreased periosteal bone formation in the tibial diaphysis, reduced osteoblast size in the proximal tibia, and decreased osteoblast surface and number in the lumbar vertebra. For the most part, histological indexes of bone resorption were nor

Mechanisms of development of morphological changes in mammals aboard biological satellites.

After orbital space flights lasting 19.5--22.5 days, disturbances are observed in mineral metabolism in rats, which are morphologically manifested as osteoporosis of the spongy sections of long hollow skeletal bones, periosteocytic osteolysis of them, atrophy and dystrophy of skeletal muscles, and inhibition of erythroid growth of bone marrow, which occurred and developed in weightlessness as a result of deprivation of motor activity due to removal (or reduction) of static load from the musculoskeletal system. Development of stress reaction, which is apparently intensified at certain stages of

Profiles of Sensitivity to Antibiotics and Heavy Metals in Strains of Pseudomonas mendocina Isolates from Leachate Pond.

Background/Objetives: Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is a multifaceted issue that the World Health Organization (WHO) identifies as one of the primary threats to global health for humans, animals, and the environment. In Colombia, AMR has been extensively studied at the hospital level; however, there are limited environmental studies, particularly concerning leachates from landfills. The objective of this study was to identify and determine the genetic relationships, as well as the sensitivity profiles to antibiotics and heavy metals, of ten Pseudomonas mendocina isolates from a leachate pond.

Fatal nocardiosis in a dog caused by multiresistant Nocardia veterana.

Among pathogenic Nocardia species in humans and animals, infections caused by Nocardia (N.) veterana have rarely been described and so far, all non-human cases are linked to bovine mastitis in Brazil. The aim of this study was to identify the causative microorganism involved in the death of a three-month-old dog suffering from dyspnea and neurological deficits ante mortem. Pathomorphological investigation revealed (pyo-)granulomatous lesions in various organs. Bacteriological examination was performed and the respective bacteria were subjected to matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization tim

Maternal perinatal undernutrition modifies lactose and serotranferrin in milk: relevance to the programming of metabolic diseases?

A close link between intrauterine growth restriction and development of chronic adult diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension has been established both in humans and animals. Modification of growth velocity during the early postnatal period (i.e., lactation) may also sensitize to the development of metabolic syndrome in adulthood. This suggests that milk composition may have long-lasting programming/deprogramming metabolic effects in the offspring. We therefore assess the effects of maternal perinatal denutrition on breast milk composition in a food-restricted 50% (FR50) rat model

CSF proteomic analysis reveals persistent iron deficiency-induced alterations in non-human primate infants.

Iron deficiency (ID) anemia during infancy results in long-term neurological consequences, yet the mediating mechanisms remain unclear. Infant monkeys often become naturally anemic during the first 6 months of life, presenting an opportunity to determine the effect of developmental iron deficiency. After weaning, animals were chosen randomly for supplementation with oral iron or, fed a standard commercial chow diet. The control group was never iron deficient. ID anemia was corrected by 12 months in both groups, as indicated by hematological parameters. CSF was collected for proteomic analysis

A physics-guided neural network framework for prediction and control of spring-mass running.

The spring-mass template acts as a fundamental bridge between animal locomotion and legged robotic platforms. However, controlling spring-mass dynamics involves a persistent trade-off: numerical integration offers accuracy but high computational cost, while approximate analytical solutions provide efficiency but suffer from linearization errors. To resolve this, we propose a physics-guided hybrid neural network framework for the spring-mass running template. Unlike closed-box predictors trained end-to-end, our architecture enforces flight phase physics by embedding exact analytical solutions f
