Critical relative channel width to ensure reservoir sustainability in flood retention dams: Insights from a nationwide inventory in Japan.

Flood retention dam (FRD) reservoirs are usually dry, minimizing sediment deposition through fluvial flushing and thereby keeping maintenance costs low. However, when the Relative Channel Width (RCW)-the ratio of the flushing channel width to the reservoir bottom width-is extremely small, the flushing process becomes ineffective, leading to substantial sediment accumulation and costly maintenance. Nevertheless, the relationship between RCW and sedimentation in FRD reservoirs has largely remained qualitative. This study quantifies the relationship between RCW and reservoir sedimentation status

Seasonal Flooding Disrupts Expected Depth-Dependent Patterns of Mineral Associated Carbon, Nitrogen, and Phosphorus Across Land Uses.

Approximately 25%-70% of soil organic matter (OM) is stored below 30 cm, rendering subsoil OM cycling an important control on OM persistence. With climate change, soils are experiencing new pedoclimatic disturbances like seasonal flooding that can destabilize mineral associated organic matter (MAOM) and undermine carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) persistence. Our current understanding of how OM cycles down the soil profile is largely based on well-drained soils. Thus, it remains uncertain if expected depth-dependent trends and subsoil OM persistence differ in soils subjected to seas

Harnessing compound flood risk assessment Utilizing a physics-informed GeoAI surrogate framework considering social vulnerability sources.

Compound flooding (CF), driven by the interaction of extreme storm surge, rainfall, and river discharge, poses escalating risks to society, especially in densely populated megadeltas. Most assessments still treat these drivers separately, and few link flood hazards to social vulnerability. This study develops a physics-informed GeoAI (PI-GeoAI) surrogate framework that couples a hydrodynamic model with supervised machine learning for spatiotemporal risk assessment. We demonstrate the framework using Typhoon Mangkhut in the Greater Bay Area, China. The Random Forest surrogate outperforms seven

Detection of pathogenic leptospires in water bodies in neighborhoods vulnerable to flooding, through a participatory research approach in Santa Fe (Argentina).

This study aimed to identify areas with the presence of pathogenic Leptospira in marginalized neighborhoods of Santa Fe, Argentina, through a participatory research approach. Additionally, we aimed to optimize a low-cost and sensitive detection method suitable for public sector laboratories in resource-limited settings. Three neighborhoods highly vulnerable to hydrological risks and leptospirosis outbreaks-Colastiné Sur, La Vuelta del Paraguayo, and Chalet-were selected. A series of meetings with local residents were conducted to discuss the risks of leptospirosis and to collaboratively map hi

Flood-induced microbial contaminants and quantitative microbial risk assessment over a riverine environment of the mid-Brahmaputra valley, India.

This study emphasizes the rarely explored quantitative and qualitative assessments of the microbial contamination influenced by the river floods and the associated human health risks through the application of quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) in the highly flood-prone mid-Brahmaputra valley. Bacterial pathogens were isolated and analyzed through the standard culture and molecular methods. For the entire duration of the study, the pathogens in the studied water sources consistently exceeded the safe limits for both drinking water (0 CFU/100 mL) and recreational water (200 CFU/100 m…

Community-based mental health screening & referral for flood-affected women in rural Pakistan: an intervention feasibility study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: South Asia carries the burden of a rapidly changing climate with floods and extreme heat. These disasters further translate into mental health distress, financial stress and detrimental effects on well-being, with women being the most vulnerable. This study aims to demonstrate that mental health screening, referral and resilience-building group sessions can be successfully administered by community health workers and primary health facility staff in a flood-affected rural population of women in Pakistan and provide evidence on the effectiveness of this approach for improving thei…

Flood-driven survival and growth of dominant C4 grasses helps set their distributions along tallgrass prairie moisture gradients.

PREMISE: Five C4 grasses (Bouteloua curtipendula, Schizachyrium scoparium, Andropogon gerardii, Sorghastrum nutans, Spartina pectinata) dominate different portions of a moisture gradient from dry to wet tallgrass prairies in the Upper Midwest of the United States. We hypothesized that their distributions may partly reflect differences in flooding tolerance and context-specific growth relative to each other. METHODS: We tested these ideas with greenhouse flooding and drought experiments, outdoor mesocosm experiments, and a natural experiment involving a month-long flood in two wet-mesic prairi

Post-flood soil geochemistry and arsenic mobilization following the 2024 YAGI storm in a transboundary river basin of northern Thailand.

This study investigates the impacts of the 2024 YAGI storm on floodplain soil geochemistry along the transboundary Sai River between Thailand and Myanmar. A total of 30 soil sampling sites, including 5 pre-flood (December 2023) and 25 post-flood (October 2024) locations, were analyzed to assess flood-induced alterations in trace metal and nutrient concentrations across stratified depths (0-30 cm and 30-60 cm). Multivariate analyses, including PCA and hierarchical clustering, revealed distinct geochemical signatures separating floodway, floodplain, and pre-flood soils, primarily driven by enric

Flood susceptibility mapping in arid urban areas using SHAP-enhanced stacked ensemble learning: A case study of Jeddah.

Flooding is an escalating hazard in arid and rapidly urbanizing environments such as Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where the lack of historical flood records and sparse monitoring systems challenge effective risk prediction. To address this gap, this study aims to develop an accurate and interpretable flood susceptibility-mapping framework tailored to data-scarce urban settings. The research integrates a stacked ensemble model-comprising machine learning: XGBoost, CatBoost, and Histogram-based Gradient Boosting (HGB)-with SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) to enhance prediction accuracy and model tr

Experimental study of pore-scale flow mechanism of immiscible CO2 flooding under in-situ temperature-pressure coupling conditions.

The flow mechanism of CO2 flooding serves as the theoretical foundation for examining the synergic integration of oil recovery and CO2 storage. Immiscible CO2 flooding has attracted considerable research attention due to its simplicity and cost-efficiency. However, minimal studies are available regarding the flow characteristics and EOR mechanism of immiscible CO2 flooding in in-situ temperature-pressure coupling conditions at the pore scale. Therefore, this study employed a modified high-temperature, high-pressure microfluidic system to simulate the in-situ CO2 and water injection processes i

Development of flood detection framework integrating Synthetic Aperture Radar polarimetry and machine learning for semi-urban vegetation systems.

Semi-urban vegetation system includes vegetation partly managed by humans and partly growing naturally. It plays a vital role in ecosystem stability but are vulnerable to floods across the world highlighting the need for strategies to enhance resilience to climate change. However, detecting floods is difficult using Earth Observation due to complex scattering between radar signals and varied surface conditions. To address this, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) polarimetry provides information to distinguish scattering patterns of flooded from non-flooded areas. The study proposes a flood detecti…

Adaptive response of prokaryotic communities to extreme pollution flooding in a Paleolithic rock art cave (Pindal Cave, northern Spain).

A flood event affecting Pindal Cave, a UNESCO World Heritage site, introduced a substantial amount of external sediments and waste into the cave. This event led to the burial of preexisting sediments, altering the biogeochemical characteristics of the cave ecosystem by introducing heightened levels of organic matter, nitrogen compounds, phosphorus, and heavy metals. The sediments included particulate matter and waste from a cattle farm located within the water catchment area of the cavity, along with diverse microorganisms, reshaping the cave microbial community. This study addresses the ongoi

Fe(III) stabilizing soil organic matter and reducing methane emissions in paddy fields under varying flooding conditions.

The role of iron (Fe) in soil organic matter (SOM) stabilization and decomposition in paddy soils has recently gained attention, but the underlying mechanisms during flooding and drying periods remain elusive. As the depth water layer is maintained in the fallow season, there will be more soluble Fe than during the wet and drainage seasons and the availability of oxygen (O2) will be different. To assess the influence of soluble Fe on SOM mineralization during flooding, an incubation experiment was designed under oxic and anoxic flooding conditions, with and without Fe(III) addition. The result
