A 54-year-old woman with known chest wall melanoma (post-wide local excision) presented for imaging after a yearlong therapy with nivolumab. F-FDG PET/CT was performed 1 day after she completed the immunotherapy. Maximum intensity projection images showed bilateral relatively symmetrical uptake in the facial region. On fused PET/CT images, the uptake was seen corresponding to subcutaneous malar prominence underneath the orbits (like eye-black stripe used in sports) with subcutaneous malar calcification. Repeat PET/CT performed after 3 months revealed significant decrease in the malar uptake. I

Respiratory motion artifacts may affect interpretation of whole-body 18F-FDG PET/CT scans, especially when lesions are localized between the liver and the lung. We report a case of a patient with breast cancer who underwent PET/CT after therapy and in whom focal 18F-FDG uptake of equivocal interpretation was observed between the liver and the pleura. A subsequent imaging acquisition of the right lateral decubitus showed that the lesion had a pleural location, thus improving the diagnostic accuracy of the PET/CT finding.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study is to investigate the hippocampal neurodegeneration and its associated aberrant functions in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients using simultaneous PET/MRI.
METHODS: Forty-two cognitively normal controls (NC), 38 MCI, and 22 AD patients were enrolled in this study. All subjects underwent 18F-FDG PET/functional MRI (fMRI) and high-resolution T1-weighted MRI scans on a hybrid GE Signa PET/MRI scanner. Neurodegeneration in hippocampus and its subregions was quantified by regional gray matter volume and 18F-FDG standardized up

BACKGROUND: The amnestic presentation of mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) represents the most common prodromal stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia. There is, however, some evidence of aMCI with typical amnestic syndrome but showing long-term clinical stability. The ability to predict stability or progression to dementia in the aMCI condition is important, particularly for the selection of candidates in clinical trials. We aimed to establish the role of in vivo biomarkers, as assessed by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) measures and [18 F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography (P

OBJECTIVES: We compared the diagnostic value of fully integrated 18F-FDG PET/MRI to that of clinical and serological markers for monitoring disease activity in patients with aortitis/chronic periaortitis (A/CPA) during immunosuppressive therapy.
METHODS: Patients positive for A/CPA at the initial and at least 2 consecutive PET/MRI studies were included for retrospective analysis. Imaging (qualitative and quantitative analysis), clinical, and serologic (C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate) assessments were determined at each visit, and their findings compared. OBJECTIVES: Although sleep disturbances are prevalent among patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), their neural substrates remain unclear. We aimed to clarify the neural substrates of sleep disturbances in patients with DLB.
METHODS: We evaluated sleep disturbances, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and brain glucose metabolism in 22 patients with probable DLB using actigraphy, the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI), and 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography, respectively. Total sleep time (TST) and average activity count per minute (AAC) during sleep were calculated for s

Limbic encephalitis is an inflammatory process involving the limbic structures of the brain, manifested with short-term memory deficits, confusion, depression and seizures. It is usually a paraneoplastic condition but it may also appear as a nonparaneoplastic syndrome. Patients with this condition may exhibit a variety of antibodies in their serum or/and cerebrospinal fluid targeting basement membrane components that bind to a variety of neurotransmitter receptors such as α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionic acid and GABA B and proteins associated to the ion channels such as LGI1,

Nocardiosis is an uncommon infection caused by ubiquitous environmental aerobic gram-positive filamentous bacteria, present in soil and water. Skin and lungs are usually the main targets of localized infections. Rarely, disseminated forms can occur in immunocompromised individuals. A 63-year-old man with a history of late-onset asthma and nasal and sinus polyposis treated with oral low-dose corticosteroid regimen presented with fever, headache, myalgia, skin erythematous plaques, and pustules. Brain MRI revealed multiple abscesses and pachymeningitis. F-FDG PET/CT was performed to assess the e

A 74-year-old man was admitted for evaluation of a pancreatic tumor. Abdominal CT revealed a multilocular cystic tumor with thickened septal walls and an enhanced mural nodule in the head of the pancreas, as well as enlarged para-aortic lymph nodes. FDG-PET revealed FDG accumulation in the nodule and in the para-aortic nodes. The tumor was diagnosed as intraductal papillary mucinous carcinoma (IPMC) with para-aortic lymph node metastases. After 2 courses of chemotherapy with gemcitabine and nab-paclitaxel, the tumor decreased slightly in size, but the lymph nodes did not change. Surgery was th

This study aims at assessing whether EANM harmonisation strategy combined with EQ·PET methodology could be successfully applied to harmonize brain 2-deoxy-2[18F]fluoro-D-glucose ([18F]FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) images. The NEMA NU 2 body phantom was prepared according to the EANM guidelines with an [18F]FDG solution. Raw PET phantom data were reconstructed with three different reconstruction protocols frequently used in clinical PET brain imaging: ([Formula: see text]) Ordered subset expectation maximization (OSEM) 3D with time of flight (TOF), 2 iterations and 21 subsets; ([Formu

Cardiac sarcoidosis (CS) causes lethal arrhythmia and heart failure and has a poor prognosis; therefore, early detection and early stage treatment are important. However, diagnosis of isolated CS may be difficult in some cases owing to the low sensitivity of myocardial biopsy. Herein, we describe the case of a patient with isolated CS, showing change from negative to positive fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (18 F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) uptake results within 9 months. The patient showed rapid reduction in left ventricular systolic function with sustained ventricular tachycardia.

Valid diagnosis of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is essential to establish appropriate treatment and care. However, the diagnostic accuracy is complicated by clinical and pathological overlap with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Cingulate island sign (CIS), defined as sparing of posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) relative to precuneus and cuneus on 18F-fluoro-deoxy-glucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG-PET), is included in the revised diagnostic DLB criteria. There are no guidelines for the visual grading of CIS, although visual rating is a fast-applicable method in a clinical setting. The o

A 49-year-old patient with metastatic melanoma was treated with nivolumab (Opdivo). An early F-FDG PET/CT after 2 cycles showed a progressive metabolic disease. A 4-month optimal follow-up F-FDG PET/CT showed a complete metabolic response. The treatment was stopped after 22 cycles because of immunotherapy-related pneumonitis. After discontinuation of treatment, PET/CT examinations demonstrated a metabolic complete remission during 2 years. The metabolic pattern on early PET was suggestive of pseudoprogression, which is a rare phenomenon reflecting an activation of inflammatory cells within the

Identifying whether patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are converting to Alzheimer's disease (AD) is clinically important, but there are still controversies and doubts. We aimed to develop a novel connectome approach which could accurately and precisely predict whether MCI patients are converted to AD using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET). In our study, FDG-PET images were acquired from 84 patients with MCI who converted to AD within 48 months and 109 patients with MCI without conversion within 48 months from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiat

An 18 years old man was admitted to our hospital for intractable oral ulcer and abdominal discomfort. Bulky soft-tissue masses were found in pathology speciments in the retroperitoneum from the twelfth thoracic vertebra to the fifth lumbar vertebra during an abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan. Then he was referred for fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/CT (18F-FDG PET/CT) due to suspicion of paraneoplastic pemphigus. On the maximum intensity projection image, a large, elongated mass was displayed in the right abdomen near the spine with slightly increased 18F-FDG

Positron emission tomography (PET) computed tomography (CT) with 2-[fluorine-18] fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose (FDG) has been established as an effective modality for evaluation of cancer. Interpretations of patterns of physiologic 18F-FDG uptake by the heart is particularly difficult given the wide normal variations of 18F-FDG metabolic activity observed. Atypical patterns of focal or diffuse physiologic cardiac 18F-FDG uptake and post-therapeutic effects after radiation therapy, systemic diseases, or cardiomyopathy may also be confused with malignant disease on 18F-FDG PET/CT. In this article, we
