Negative impact of chronic pandemic-specific financial stress on food security among college students.

Since the pandemic started, food insecurity has become a more serious issue for U.S. college students. The study goals were to evaluate whether pandemic-specific stress contributes to current food insecurity (as of February-March of 2022) and to determine which student characteristics are associated with food insecurity. We used the 2022 Spring American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment data (n = 620) collected at a public university. We estimated two multiple logistic regression models. The odds of having very low food security (OR = 8.65, 95% CI = 4.84:15.43) and …

Exploring the relationship between climate-related exposures and oral health outcomes in Pakistan: A community-based cross-sectional study.

Climate change is increasingly recognized as a contextual determinant of health in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Climate-related stressors such as water scarcity and food insecurity may influence oral health indirectly by disrupting hygiene practices, dietary patterns, and access to care. However, epidemiological evidence examining these relationships remains limited, particularly in resource-limited settings. This study aimed to examine the association between selected climate-related exposures and oral health outcomes among adults residing in climate-vulnerable districts of Pakis…

Exploring the Association Between Indicators of Socioeconomic Instability, Survival Sex, and Methamphetamine Use Among Young Adult Black Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Methamphetamine (Meth) use is a contributor to poor health outcomes among young Black American gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (YB-GBMSM). Emerging research indicates that socioeconomic instability may be a salient antecedent of meth use as men may be encouraged to engage in health-eroding activities, such as survival sex, to care for themselves, and then cope with instability-related stress via use of substances. We examined the degree to which indicators of socioeconomic instability, including homelessness and food insecurity, would directly, and indirectly, predict increa…

Associations between cooking self-efficacy, attitude, and behaviors among people living alone: A cross-sectional survey analysis.

Cooking-related literacy and attitudes may play important roles in preventing and reducing diet-related chronic diseases and nutrition disparities. People living alone are an under-researched but growing population who face above average food insecurity rates. This study's objectives were to 1) test how cooking self-efficacy and attitude are stratified demographically among a sample of people living alone, focusing on variations across gender, age, and food security, and 2) examine how cooking self-efficacy and attitude are associated with two indicators of cooking behavior - cooking frequency…

Food security status of patients with type 2 diabetes and their adherence to dietary counselling from selected hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Even though adherence to dietary counselling for patients with diabetes is essential for improving health and preventing complications, access to an adequate and quality diet is challenging for patients living in a food-insecure household. The availability of data in this regard is limited in Ethiopia. Thus, this study assessed the food security status of patients with type 2 diabetes, their adherence to dietary counselling, and contributing factors at public hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. METHODS: This was a facility-based cross-sectional study among 602 patients with Type 2

Regional disparities in food security and depression among single-person households in the Republic of Korea.

BACKGROUND: Single-person households constitute over 40% of all households in the Republic of Korea and are more vulnerable to food insecurity and depression than multi-person households. There is a lack of research on examining whether regional characteristics are associated with the degree of food insecurity and depression among single-person households. This study aimed to examine the regional disparities in food security and depression among single-person households in the Republic of Korea. METHODS: A total of 227,873 adults from the 2019 Korean Community Health Survey was included in th…

Social needs and health-related quality of life among hematologic cancer survivors.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have examined social needs (social determinants of health) among cancer survivors, but studies have not specifically focused on patients with leukemia or lymphoma. We examined food insecurity and other social needs among hematologic cancer survivors, including individuals who had completed primary therapy for leukemia, lymphoma, or multiple myeloma. A particular focus of the study was on the relationship between social needs and health-related quality of life. METHODS: We conducted a postal survey of a multiethnic cohort of hematologic cancer survivors who reside in…

Dysregulation and sleep in 12- to 18-month-olds with elevated behavior problems: The moderating role of material hardship.

Sleep problems, including longer sleep onset latency, frequent night wakings, and shorter nighttime sleep duration, are common during late infancy and are associated with elevated dysregulation, yet little is known about whether material hardship strengthens this association. The current study examined whether financial strain and food insecurity moderated associations between infant dysregulation and sleep outcomes in 200, 12- to 18-month-old infants with elevated behavior problems from a predominantly Hispanic/Latine sample. Caregivers completed measures of infant dysregulation, sleep, finan…

Providing Ethical Healthcare in Resource-Poor Environments.

The ethics of providing health care in resource-poor environments is a complex topic. It implies two related questions: What can we do with the resources on hand? Of all the things we can do, which ones should we do? "Resource-poor" (i.e., resource-challenged, resource-constrained) environments are situations in which clinicians, organizations, or healthcare systems have the knowledge and skills, but not the means, to carry out highly effective and beneficial interventions. Determinants of a population's health often rely less on disease and injury management than on recognizing and meeting th

Psychological Distress and Related Variables in Older Adults from Northeast Brazil.

Population aging is reshaping public health priorities across Latin America, yet most evidence on late-life psychological distress comes from high-income societies. Brazil's Northeast combines rapid aging with persistent structural deprivation. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of psychological distress among older adults in this region and to examine its association with food insecurity, sociodemographic position, and health-related behaviors. A convenience sample of 355 adults aged 60 to 94 years was recruited in Paraíba, Piauí, and Bahia. Participants completed a sociodem…

Associations of food security and food assistance with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality among postmenopausal women from the women's health initiative.

BACKGROUND: Prior research indicates that food insecurity is negatively associated with cardiometabolic health and plays a role in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, which also increases with age. Food insecurity disproportionately affects ageing women in the USA, who face higher poverty and economic insecurity rates than their male counterparts, increasing their risk for hunger, poor nutrition and chronic conditions. We examined the association of food security and assistance with CVD morbidity and mortality risks in postmenopausal women through a target trial emulation. METHODS: A retrospec…

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Adherence to Antihypertensive Medications.

IMPORTANCE: Nonadherence to antihypertensive medications is associated with uncontrolled blood pressure, higher mortality rates, and increased health care costs, and food insecurity is one of the modifiable medication nonadherence risk factors. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a social intervention program for addressing food insecurity, may help improve adherence to antihypertensive medications. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether receipt of SNAP benefits can modify the consequences of food insecurity on nonadherence to antihypertensive medications. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PART…

Dysregulation of miR-103a-3p in KGN cells and its targeting of KGN: potential role in polycystic ovary syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Rwanda, like many African countries, endeavours to overcome the food insecurity challenge with different initiatives. One such initiative is the 'one-cow-per-poor-family' programme known as the 'Girinka Programme'. With the introduction of every cow into the household, there is a resultant change in household bio-economics. Subsequently, some decisions must be made regarding either the consumption or the selling of milk, calves or manure. This study investigates the effect of household decision dynamics within the framework of this programme on food insecurity in Rwanda. The micro-…

Differential Health and Social Needs of Older Adults Waitlisted for Public Housing or Housing Choice Vouchers.

Affordable housing is an important form of income security for low-income older persons. This article describes characteristics of older persons waitlisted for either public housing or a housing choice voucher (HCV; previously Section 8) in Portland, Oregon. 358 persons (32% response rate) completed a mailed survey with questions about demographics, health and housing status, food insecurity, and preference for housing with services. Findings indicate that many waitlisted older persons experienced homelessness or housing instability, poor health, high hospital use, and food insecurity. Public …
