Integrating food loss and waste reduction policies with global dietary shifts: an economic modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Food loss and waste undermine the resilience and sustainability of global food systems, jeopardising progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Adopting healthier and more sustainable diets could help reduce global food loss and waste, but the potential trade-offs on food loss and waste trends and interactions with standalone reduction policies remain largely unexplored. We aimed to investigate the effects of reducing food loss and waste within the context of a global dietary transition by 2050, shedding light on the synergies and trade-offs between two crucial polic

Succimer-coated wooden spoons for in situ removal of heavy metals in food.

Heavy metals in food present significant health risks; however, consumer-level solutions for reducing exposure remain limited. This study presents a novel consumer-focused solution in which succimer (an FDA-approved chelation therapy) is stably grafted onto the surface of a wooden spoon. Using a standard coupling reaction, succimer is covalently attached to lignin in the wood matrix through ester bond formation. Succimer-functionalized spoons elicit improved metal retention compared to the pristine wooden spoon. To demonstrate the efficacy of this food contact device, we tested its use during

7-ketocholesterol as a critical oxysterol: Impact on human health and safety in food systems.

7-Ketocholesterol (7-KC) is a biologically active oxysterol formed through the oxidation of cholesterol, predominantly under conditions of oxidative stress. It is generated both enzymatically in specific tissues such as the brain and liver, and non-enzymatically via reactive oxygen species (ROS), especially in aging tissues and heat-processed animal-derived foods. 7-KC exerts multifaceted effects on human health, extending beyond lipid metabolism to disrupt glucose and amino acid utilization, impair mitochondrial function, and provoke endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. These disturbances contr

Innovative approaches to mitigating persistent toxic substances and their impacts on soil health and human well-being.

Persistent toxic substances (PTS), including heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and persistent, mobile, and toxic/very persistent and very mobile (PMT/vPvM) substances present an increasing menace to soil health, alimentary systems, atmospheric cleanliness as well as human health. Despite the large amount of literature on each of the individual groups of contaminants, there is still no unified model that connects the dynamics of the soil-atmosphere environment, bioaccumulation in the food chain, new detection techniques, and policy measures. This review presents an interdiscip

Artificial intelligence-enabled machine olfaction for volatile profiling and food quality decision-making.

Monitoring food quality and aroma evolution remains a major challenge in food chemistry due to the complex dynamics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Although machine olfaction and artificial intelligence (AI) have advanced rapidly, their integration for food quality assessment remains limited. This review summarizes AI-enabled machine olfaction for food quality evaluation, focusing on VOC formation and transformation in food matrices. Relationships between biochemical degradation, VOC profiles, and olfactory signals are discussed. Key sensing technologies, including metal oxide semiconduc

Sexed semen: current state-of-the-art in small ruminants.

The rising global demand for animal products, driven by population growth and limited agricultural land, necessitates more sustainable and efficient livestock production systems. Flow cytometric sperm sex-sorting remains the only reliable technology available to control offspring sex ratios, thereby enhancing productivity in food-producing mammals. While the technology was originally developed and widely adopted in cattle, its application in small ruminants, particularly sheep and goats, remains comparatively limited and is largely confined to research and early-stage commercial use. This revi

One-Step Platform for Maduramicin and Salinomycin Detection Based on Bispecific Monoclonal Antibody and Interpretation of Molecular Recognition Mechanism.

Maduramicin (MAD) and salinomycin (SAL) are the widely used poly(ether ionophore) antibiotics to control coccidiosis in animals. Due to their strong cytotoxicity, strict control over their dosage and residue in animal food is necessary. To improve the detection efficiency of the existing single-residue detection methods, a tetraploid tumor hybrid system was constructed using drug mutagenesis, and the bispecific monoclonal antibody (BsMAb) against MAD and SAL was obtained by hybridization-hybridoma technology. By optimizing the optimal working concentration of the tracer and antibody, a multire

Phosphoramidates and phosphonamidates (ProTides) with antiviral activity.

Following the first report on the nucleoside phosphoramidate (ProTide) prodrug approach in 1990 by Chris McGuigan, the extensive investigation of ProTide technology has begun in many laboratories. Designed with aim to overcome limitations and the key resistance mechanisms associated with nucleoside analogues used in the clinic (poor cellular uptake, poor conversion to the 5'-monophosphate form), the ProTide approach has been successfully applied to a vast number of nucleoside analogues with antiviral and anticancer activity. ProTides consist of a 5'-nucleoside monophosphate in which the two hy

OVA-Induced Food Allergy Leads to Neurobehavioral Changes in Mice and the Potential Role of Gut Microbiota and Metabolites Dysbiosis.

The neurobehavioral changes in food allergy mice have not been comprehensively studied, and the mechanism underlying them remains unclear. Our study aims to fully investigate neurobehavioral changes in OVA (ovalbumin)-sensitized food allergy mice and explore the potential mechanism via the gut microbiota-brain axis. We established the food allergy mouse (C57BL/6J male) model with OVA, evaluating the anaphylactic symptoms and the levels of Th2 signature cytokine and allergy-related antibodies in serum. Using behavioral tests, we measured anxiety, depression, social behavior, repetitive behavior

Incorporating Real World Experiences in an Undergraduate Biochemistry Laboratory CourseDetection of Gluten in Food and Beverages Using an Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay.

Celiac disease (CD), an autoimmune disease affecting 1% of the global population, is caused by the consumption of gluten. Gluten is a storage protein that is found in wheat, rye, and barley. The addition of gluten to food products imparts unique viscous and elastic characteristics in foods such as bread. The only recommended treatment for celiac disease is a gluten-free diet. The consumption of gluten-free labeled food products reduces the risk of an autoimmune response and other symptoms associated with celiac disease, including anemia, dermatitis herpetiformia, osteoporosis, muscle weakness,

Smart and Sustainable 3D-Printed Nanocellulose-Based Sensors for Food Freshness Monitoring.

Annually, about one-third of the food produced around the world is wasted due to spoilage. Food contamination and spoilage, along with the use and disposal of nondegradable packaging materials, impact human health and have huge economic and sustainability implications. Achieving sustainability within the food system requires innovative solutions to reduce the environmental footprint. Herein, we describe the formulation, scalable manufacturing, and characterization of three-dimensional (3D)-printed sensors prepared from a mixture of edible biopolymer hydrogels, 8% alginate, and 10% gelatin and

Evaluation of the emergency nutrition response in Malatya after Türkiye-Syria earthquake.

The Türkiye-Syria earthquake struck eleven provinces directly in Türkiye on 6 February 2023. Emergency nutrition care is indispensable for sustaining the lives of victims and rescue personnel. To optimally support their well-being, emergency food must be both healthy (i.e. aligned with dietary guidelines) and safe. However, globally, there is a dearth of research on the emergency nutrition conditions in shelters in the immediate aftermath of natural disasters. This lack of scientific evidence could limit the extent to which nutritional gaps can be identified and remedied for future relief effo

Evolutionary and neuropsychological perspectives on addictive behaviors and addictive substances: relevance to the "food addiction" construct.

It has been argued that food cannot be "addictive", unlike conventional drugs of abuse, because it is an essential part of life. In this paper, evidence is reviewed, largely from an evolutionary psychobiological perspective, that plant-based psychoactive drugs (such as those derived from the opium poppy and the coca leaf) and gambling-related behaviors were once adaptive for human health and survival in a similar manner as energy-based foods were for nourishment. "Evolutionary mismatch" viewpoints contend that certain behaviors were enhanced during the hunter-gatherer lifestyle - from which ou

From fruit waste to foods via fermentation.

The increasing generation of fruit waste represents a major environmental and economic challenge for the agri-food sector, while also offering significant opportunities for sustainable valorisation within the framework of the circular economy. Fruits rejected for cosmetic reasons, together with processing by-products, are rich sources of dietary fibre, sugars and bioactive compounds that can be converted into value-added products. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of microbial fermentation as a sustainable strategy for fruit waste valorisation, with particular emphasis on th
