Midfoot osteotomies have long been used for a wide variety of congenital and acquired deformities. Severe pes cavus often necessitates some form of surgical correction, and no single procedure can be used exclusively. Midfoot osteotomies may be combined with adjunctive procedures to form an appropriate strategy for the treatment of these deformities. The authors present an overview of pes cavus, including evaluation and classification of the deformity, as well as associated conditions. Several soft tissue and osseous procedures for correction of the cavus foot are discussed. Special attention

Fibular hemimelia presents with foot deformity and leg length discrepancy. Previous classifications have focused on the degree of fibular deficiency rather than the type of foot deformity. Published methods of surgical reconstruction have often failed due to residual or recurrent foot deformity. The purpose of this report is to introduce new classification and reconstruction methods. The Paley SHORDT procedure is used to stabilize the ankle when there is a hypoplastic distal fibula with a dynamic valgus deformity. It involves shortening and realignment of the distal tibia relative to the fibul

BACKGROUND: Painful feet and lower limb dysfunction are risk factors for falling. Toenail deformities are common disorders in elderly people, but the relationship between nail deformities and lower limb function remains unclear. The aims of the present study were to assess the impairment of lower limb function in patients with deformities of the great toe and to determine whether foot care treatment is beneficial in reducing the risk of falling.
METHODS: Functional tests of the lower extremities were performed in 263 adults, including patients with any of hallux valgus, ingrown nail, or pachy

A patient presented with a painful flatfoot deformity, which developed after the onset of a drop-foot secondary to a herniated lumbar disk. On examination, the only functioning muscles were her gastrocnemius-soleus complex and her intrinsic toe flexors. Her affected foot had taken the classic deformity seen with tibialis posterior dysfunction--a valgus heel, midfoot collapse and an abducted forefoot. Peroneus brevis was not functioning and therefore could not be implicated as part of the etiology of this patient's acquired flatfoot deformity. The mechanism in which the ground reaction force pr

The authors report on a new case of multiple pterygium syndrome (MPS) or Escobar's syndrome. Generally the seriousness of MPS is due to the severity of the flexion deformities of the joints and to the serious and evolutionary deformities in the spine. Our case is different from classical description of MPS for absence of spine deformities and for presence of bony lesions below the pterygia, for a bizarre aspect of the ears and for foot deformities.

Complex deformities of the foot and ankle remain a difficult problem for even the most experienced surgeon. Many techniques are available to provide correction and no single one is appropriate for all cases. Identical deformities often can be treated with different techniques with equally successful outcomes. Each deformity is unique and the surgeon should be capable of using multiple techniques to provide the most appropriate treatment for the patient and the deformity. Simple deformities often can be handled with simple techniques but more complex problems often require more complex solution

BACKGROUND: Congenital vertical talus (CVT) and congenital oblique talus (COT) are rocker-bottom foot deformities that have similar names and no objective definitions. This has led to confusion for practitioners, as well as scientific challenges for researchers. Our goal was to provide objective radiographic criteria to define and differentiate CVT and COT.
METHODS: We evaluated 62 pairs of maximum dorsiflexion and plantar flexion lateral radiographs of infant feet that had been clinically diagnosed with CVT. The dorsiflexion tibiotalar angle, the plantar flexion talus-first metatarsal angle,…

Hiking has become very popular due to the physical and mental health benefits it provides. Skin lesions may occur with hiking and various factors contribute to their development. Although some lesions may appear to have little importance, something as simple as chaffing can cause serious ulcers in people with at-risk feet. Few studies have analyzed preexisting physical characteristics in hiking and addressed the development of lesions in hikers. This observational and longitudinal study examines the development of foot lesions during hiking, taking into account the influence of existing skin d

Talocalcaneal bridge mostly occurs on the inner side of heel-talar joint, and accounts for the highest proportion of foot tarsal deformities … ssification is simpler and more comprehensive, and Blitz classification is recommended for combined foot deformities or osteoarthritis. In terms of treatment, conservative treatment is recommended for patients with mild symptoms;patients who fail conservative treatment could choose arthroscopic surgery to remove bone bridge, while patients with larger areas(>50% s …

The orthopedic manifestations in patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease include deformity and dysfunction of the extremities and spine. Conservative treatment is the first choice. Orthosis and rehabilitation can improve function, and are important for the prevention of joint contractures. Foot problems are most commonly observed and require surgical treatment. Foot deformities include pes cavus, cavovarus, claw toes, or drop foot. Single or combined surgeries selected for soft tissues are plantar release, tendon transfer, or Achilles tendon lengthening, and those for bones are osteotomies a…

Digital deformities continue to be a common ailment among many patients who present to foot and ankle specialists. When conservative treatment fails to eliminate patient complaints, surgical correction remains a viable treatment option. Proximal interphalangeal joint arthrodesis remains the standard procedure among most foot and ankle surgeons. With continued advances in fixation technology and techniques, surgeons continue to have better options for the achievement of excellent digital surgery outcomes. This article reviews current trends in fixation of digital deformities while highlighting

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and severity of foot pain and deformity and the associated risk of leg and low back pain.
METHOD: A cross-sectional postal survey was conducted among a randomly selected sample of 2100 adult Danish inhabitants (18-80 years of age). Participants reported 1-month period prevalences of foot, lower leg, knee, hip and back pain.
RESULTS: Responder rate was 79.6%. Prevalence of foot pain was 30.4% with a total of 55.9% reporting pain in the foot, leg or back lasting more than 1 day within the previous month. Foot pain lasting more than 1 month was experienced
