Total extrusion of a silicone encircling band through the muscle insertions presenting as orbital cellulitis.

INTRODUCTION: We present an unusual case of anterior migration of a solid silicone encircling band 9 years after scleral buckling surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An 83-year old woman presented with acute onset of pain and discharge in her left eye. She had undergone cataract surgery complicated by endophthalmitis and managed with pars plana vitrectomy nine years earlier. RESULTS: The patient was treated with transection and removal of the extruding encircling band. Pain ceased within two days. Two weeks postoperatively, the conjunctiva was well adapted without any discharge, ocular motility

Bizarre allegation of negligence in fabricated pin migration--a case report.

Kirschner's wires (popularly known as 'K-wires' or 'pins') are used commonly in various orthopaedic surgical fixations. Around the shoulder joint such pins are used for fixation of acromioclavicular joint, sternoclavicular joint, proximal humerus and clavicle. In such fixations, spontaneous loosening and extraction of pins would not cause as much anxiety and worry to the surgeon as a pin which breaks and migrates within the body. Such alarm is not just due to the potential damage that the migrating pin can cause, but also due to fear of misinterpretation of the event in legal suits as negligen

Ultrasonographic diagnosis of septic arthritis secondary to porcupine quill migration in a dog.

A 7-year-old castrated male German Shepherd Dog was evaluated for lethargy, icterus, and sepsis. Porcupine quills had been removed from the dog's face 1 month prior to examination; progressive right forelimb lameness had developed soon after removal of the quills. Septic arthritis of the right elbow joint was diagnosed and was unresponsive to antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory treatments. At the time of referral, the dog had developed endocarditis, septicemia, and disseminated intravascular coagulation. Via ultrasonography, a foreign body consistent with a porcupine quill was detected in the

Complications of retained internal bolster after pediatric percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy.

PURPOSE: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) has been widely accepted as an efficacious means of nutritional support in the infant and child. A well-described technique uses the Gauderer-Ponsky tube (CR Bard Incorporated, Tewksbury, MA) drawn antegrade through the gastric wall and secured by an internal and external SILASTIC (Dow Corning; Midland, MI) bolster. The majority of reported complications attendant to its use occur secondary to insertion. This report details a less well-described complication of tube removal. METHODS: Since 1992, 234 pediatric PEGs have been performed using a

Perfluorocarbon liquids in ophthalmology.

Perfluorocarbon liquids have been used to facilitate surgery in a wide variety of conditions, including proliferative vitreoretinopathy, giant retinal tears, drainage of suprachoroidal hemorrhages, diabetic traction, retinal detachments with a rhegmatogenous component, dislocated crystalline or intraocular lenses, and retinal detachment associated with choroidal coloboma. The clarity of perfluorocarbon liquids, with a refractive index close to that of water, allows the use of a conventional contact lens for vitreous surgery while the low viscosity facilitates tissue manipulation, injection, an

[Complications due to migration of a Kirschner wire from the clavicle (author's transl)].

The complications due to migration of a Kirschner wire from the clavicle are described. The major complication of a vascular and pulmonary kind were found in five cases. Migration of the wire into major vessels (aorta, subclavian artery) were seen twice and in three cases, the wire entered the lung. Removal of the wire from the aorta had a fatal result. Before removing displaced fixation wires, accurate localisation is necessary, if necessary using angiography in order to plan the subsequent operation. To avoid migration of the wire, one end should be bent to form a walking-stick shape, and th

Toothpick perforation of the intestines.

Toothpicks have been used since antiquity as instruments for mouth cleansing and as eating utensils. Toothpick injury to the gastrointestinal tract is often suspected only at the time of operation because patients rarely relate a history of swallowing toothpicks and most toothpicks are not radiopaque. The spectrum of toothpick injury to the gastrointestinal tract is illustrated by 5 patients who developed toothpick perforation of the gastrointestinal tract. Two patients died as a result of complications of toothpick injury, one of these presenting with recurrent gram negative sepsis with multi

Something Seems Fishy: Hepatic Abscess Due to Foreign Body Ingestion in a Pediatric Patient.

Pediatric hepatic abscesses are uncommon in children. They are usually preceded by intra-abdominal infections or caused by acute or chronic biliary disease. Cases of hepatic abscesses secondary to foreign body ingestion are even rarer but are most reported in countries such as China, where ingestion of fish and chicken bones is common. We report a rare case of an adolescent patient who developed a hepatic abscess after ingestion of a fishbone foreign body. He presented to the emergency department with emesis, abdominal pain, and subjective fevers of unknown etiology. Initial imaging of the abd

[Unusual forms of liver abscesses].

UNLABELLED: Liver abscess is a rare disease. In this paper we present five unusual cases of liver absceses. These cases represents 5.68% from all patients with liver abscesses treated in the First Surgical Clinic Iaşi, from 1977 to 2007. The ethiology of the abscesses was different: intrahepatic biliary duct migration of Ascaris lumbricoides, migration of a foreign body (toothpick) from stomach into the liver, infected hydatid cyst with a large biliary leak and cholangitis and, residual cavities after surgical treatment of hepatic hydatid cyst associated with foreign bodies. Another case was a

Ultrasound biomicroscopy in the assessment of penetrating or blunt anterior-chamber trauma.

Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) was employed in the assessment of the anterior chamber in patients affected by penetrating and blunt traumas. UBM detected correctly the extent and the localization of penetrating injuries and the presence of foreign bodies, IOL dislocation, and angular structures or ciliary body damages.

A Rare Delayed Bladder Migration of a Hem-o-lok Clip 5 Years after Robotic-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy.

Bladder migration of a Hem-o-lok® clip, due to robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP), is uncommon, and would form a foreign body in the bladder and present as lower urinary tract symptoms after the early postoperative period. We hereby report a rare, delayed appearance of a secondary bladder stone due to the migration of a Hem-o-lok® clip that occurred 5 years after RARP.

Misdiagnosis of thyroid penetration caused by fishbone ingestion: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Foreign body ingestion is a common occurrence. However, thyroid penetrating injury caused by fishbone migration is rare. CASE DESCRIPTION: In this study, we present a rare misdiagnosed case of a fishbone fixed in the thyroid with a negative diagnosis on laryngoscopy examination. A 52-year-old woman experienced severe and persistent left anterior cervical pain when eating fish. Laryngoscopic imaging at an external hospital, revealed a cyst with a maximum length of 2 cm on the epiglottis, and epiglottic cyst resection under a laryngoscope was performed. The pain was not relieved, an

Perforation of sigmoid colon by a migrated intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD), diagnosis and surgical management: a case report.

We describe the case of a 43-year-old woman presented with an 8-month history of intermittent non-specific abdominal pain. She had an Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (IUCD) inserted 4-years ago and the device was still in-situ. After initial gynaecological assessment, further clinical radiological investigations, computerized tomography imaging showed that the intraluminal part of the radiological foreign body was seen to be possibly perforating the sigmoid colon after having migrated. Diagnostic laparoscopy confirmed this and a laparotomy was performed to remove the foreign body (IUCD) foll

Migration of metallic acupuncture threads from the breast to the right ventricle: a case report.

This case report discusses the migration of a foreign body from the breast to the mediastinum, which is rarely reported, and highlights complications associated with Okibari acupuncture. This technique involves the insertion of metal fragments into the skin. A 53-year-old woman underwent mammography showing acupuncture-related metallic fragments in the breast. Cardiac evaluation revealed the presence of metallic fragments in the right ventricle and myocardium. Despite the fragments' location in the mediastinum, the patient remained asymptomatic, leading us to take a conservative approach. This
