Removal of Double Cavernous Angioma of the Frontal Lobe using a Three-Dimensional Printed Model: A Case Report.

Cerebral cavernous angiomas are vascular anomalies with dilated spaces. We report the case of rare double cavernous angiomas causing higher brain dysfunction. A 74-year-old man exhibited cognitive dysfunction. Magnetic resonance imaging showed two tumors with hemorrhage in the left frontal lobe. Preoperative diagnosis was hemorrhage caused by cavernous angiomas. A 3D model of the double cavernous angioma was made to confirm their association with cortical veins and tumors. Tumors were removed using a single small corticotomy. This is the first report of a rare double cavernous angioma and the …

Fasciculation and Elongation Protein Zeta-1 Expression in Reactive Astrocytes in a Rat Model of Frontal Lobe Injury.

There are reports that depression induced by frontal lobe injury (FLI) has a devastating effect on human mental health. We previously reported that fasciculation and elongation protein zeta-1 (FEZ1) was essential for astrocytic protection of dopamine neurons. Studies of glutamate-glutamine cycle in mental illness have been reported, whereas not from the perspective of astrocytes. This study was designed to investigate the roles of astrocytic FEZ1 and glutamate-glutamine cycle after FLI. A model of FLI was established by inserting a blade into the right frontal lobe of rats. Behavioral tests we…

Weight gain as a predictor of frontal and temporal lobe volume loss in bipolar disorder: A prospective MRI study.

OBJECTIVES: A sizable fraction of people with bipolar I disorder (BDI) experience a deteriorating clinical course with increasingly frequent mood episodes and chronic disability. This is believed to result from neurobiological illness progression, or neuroprogression. Excessive weight gain predicts neuroprogression across multiple brain illnesses, but no prospective studies have investigated this in BDI. The objective of this study was to determine whether BDI patients who experienced clinically significant weight gain (CSWG; gaining ≥7% of baseline weight) over 12 months had greater 12-month

Laminar distribution of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptide deposits in the frontal lobe in familial and sporadic Alzheimer's disease.

To determine whether genetic factors influence frontal lobe degeneration in Alzheimer's disease (AD), the laminar distributions of diffuse, primitive, and classic β-amyloid (Aβ) peptide deposits were compared in early-onset familial AD (EO-FAD) linked to mutations of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) or presenilin 1 (PSEN1) gene, late-onset familial AD (LO-FAD), and sporadic AD (SAD). The influence of apolipoprotein E (Apo E) genotype on laminar distribution was also studied. In the majority of FAD and SAD cases, maximum density of the diffuse and primitive Aβdeposits occurred in the upper …

Frontal and temporal lobe contributions to emotional enhancement of memory in behavioral-variant frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Emotional events gain special priority in how they are remembered, with emotionally arousing events typically recalled more vividly and with greater confidence than non-emotional events. In dementia, memory and emotion processing are affected to varying degrees, however, whether emotional enhancement of memory for complex ecologically-valid events is differentially affected across dementia syndromes remains unclear, with previous studies examining effects of emotion on simple visual recognition only. Here, we examined memory for an emotionally arousing short story and a closely matched, emotio

13C MRS of occipital and frontal lobes at 3 T using a volume coil for stochastic proton decoupling.

Previously, we devised a novel strategy for in vivo 13C MRS using [2-13C]glucose infusion and low-power proton decoupling, and proposed that this strategy could be used to acquire 13C MR spectra from the frontal lobe of the human brain. Here, we demonstrate, for the first time, in vivo 13C MRS of human frontal lobe acquired at 3 T. Because the primary metabolites of [2-13C]glucose can be decoupled using very-low-radiofrequency power, we used a volume coil for proton decoupling in this study. The homogeneous B(1) field of the volume coil was found to significantly enhance the decoupling efficie…

Reliable manual segmentation of the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes on magnetic resonance images of healthy subjects.

BACKGROUND: It is a challenge to reliably measure the lobar volumes from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. OBJECTIVE: Description of a landmark-based method for volumetric segmentation of the brain into the four cerebral lobes from MR images. METHOD: The segmentation method relies on a combination of anatomical landmarks and geometrical definitions. The first step, described previously, is a segmentation of the four lobes on the surface of the brain. The internal borders between the lobes are defined on the axial slices of the brain. The intra- and inter- rater reliability was determine

Major histocompatibility complex class II expression in the frontal and temporal lobes in the human fetus during development.

Antigen-presenting cells (APCs) that show the expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecules in adult persons are related to an early phase of immunological response. These molecules are responsible for the binding, transport, and presentation of a foreign antigen to helper T lymphocytes and determine the type of antibodies produced. They also stimulate the multiplication of specific B lymphocytes and participate in the elimination of autoreactive lymphocytes and maturation of T lymphocytes. Cells with MHC II molecules expressed on their surface were observed in the fr

Reduced frontal and occipital lobe asymmetry on the CT-scans of schizophrenic patients. Its specificity and clinical significance.

Frontal and occipital lobe width were determined in the computed tomographic (= CT) scans of 135 schizophrenic patients, 158 neuropsychiatri … pathological subgroup. Schizophrenic neuroleptic non-responders revealed a significant reduction of frontal lobe asymmetry (3%, p < .05), while no correlation between BPRS-subscores and disturbed cerebral laterality could be detected. In sum the present study demonstrates disturbed cerebral lateralisation in schizophrenic patients supporting the hypothesis of …

Gamma synchronization between the medial temporal lobe and medial frontal cortex for goal-directed visual attention in humans.

Goal-directed visual attention is a fundamental cognitive function that engages multiple brain regions, yet the neural circuit mechanisms in humans remain unclear. We addressed this question by simultaneously recording neural activity from the medial temporal lobe (MTL) and medial frontal cortex (MFC) during a goal-directed visual search task. We found that gamma-band synchronization between the MTL and MFC signaled target detection. Using two additional tasks, we dissociated the neural processes underlying working memory and search decision execution, revealing distinct patterns of synchroniz

Dendritic reorganization in the hippocampus, anterior temporal lobe, and frontal neocortex of lithium-pilocarpine induced Status Epilepticus (SE).

Status Epilepticus (SE) is a distributed network disorder, which involves the hippocampus and extra-hippocampal structures. Epileptogenesis in SE is tightly associated with neurogenesis, plastic changes and neural network reorganization facilitating hyper-excitability. On the other hand, dendritic spines are known to be the excitatory synapse in the brain. Therefore, dendritic spine dynamics could play an intricate role in these network alterations. However, the exact reason behind these structural changes in SE are elusive. In the present study, we have investigated the aforementioned hypothe

Voxel-based morphometry in Alzheimers disease and mild cognitive impairment: Systematic review of studies addressing the frontal lobe.

UNLABELLED: Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) is a useful approach for investigating neurostructural brain changes in dementia. We systematically reviewed VBM studies of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), specifically focusing on grey matter (GM) atrophy in the frontal lobe. METHODS: Two searches were performed on the Pubmed database. A set of exclusion criteria was applied to ensure the selection of only VBM studies that directly investigated GM volume abnormalities in AD and/or MCI patients compared to cognitively normal controls. RESULTS: From a total of 46 selected…

Decreased inhibitory neuronal activity in patients with frontal lobe brain tumors with seizure presentation: Preliminary study using magnetoencephalography.

BACKGROUND: Although 30-50 % of patients with brain tumors experience epileptic seizure as the presenting clinical symptom, and another 10-30 % are at risk for developing epilepsy in the later stages of the disease, the mechanisms of tumor-related epileptogenesis are poorly understood. We used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to investigate sensory evoked fields (SEFs) in patients with frontal lobe brain tumors as a means of evaluating the neuronal activity of peri-tumoral cortex. METHODS: Twelve patients with frontal lobe brain tumors underwent MEG. We calculated the equivalent current dipole st…
