In neuroimaging-based Alzheimer's Disease (AD) diagnosis, effectively integrating structural MRI (sMRI) and resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) data while preserving clinical interpretability remains a significant challenge. To address this issue, we propose a novel transformer-based framework that unifies heterogeneous imaging features into coherent region-level representations. Our approach uniquely leverages prior anatomical knowledge to guide attention toward AD-relevant regions while employing a learnable mapping mechanism that transforms sMRI spatial features into biologically meaning

The neurobiological mechanisms underpinning psychiatric disorders such as treatment-resistant major depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and substance use disorders, remain unknown. Psychedelic compounds, such as psilocybin, lysergic acid diethylamide, and N,N-dimethyltryptamine, have emerged as potential therapies for these disorders because of their hypothesized ability to induce neuroplastic effects and alter functional networks in the brain. Yet, the mechanisms underpinning the neurobiological treatment response remain obscure. Quantitative neuroimaging is uniquely positioned to pro

Neuroimaging research has identified significant effects of oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) on brain networks. A wide variety of approaches have been employed, largely in observational samples, with few converging results. This study therefore was designed to test for replication and extend this previous work using a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial of the effects of OCPs on brain networks. Using functional MRI, we focused on brain regions identified in prior studies. Our analyses did not strictly replicate previously reported effects of OCPs on functional connectiv

The effects of hallucinogenic drugs on the human brain have been studied since the earliest days of neuroimaging in the 1990s. However, approaches are often hard to compare and results are heterogeneous. In this chapter, we summarize studies investigating the effects of hallucinogens on the resting brain, with a special emphasis on replicability and limitations. In previous studies, similarities were observed between psilocybin, LSD, and ayahuasca, with respect to decreases in cerebral blood flow and increases in global functional connectivity in the precuneus and thalamus. Additionally, LSD c

Apraxic agraphia is a writing disorder due to a loss or lack of access to motor engrams that program the movements necessary to produce letters. Clinical and functional neuroimaging studies have demonstrated that the neural network responsible for writing includes the superior parietal region and the dorsolateral and medial premotor cortex. Recent studies of two cases with atypical lesion localisations in the left thalamus and the right cerebellum support the hypothesis that the written language network is larger than previously assumed. The aim of this study is twofold: (1) to provide a surve…

The introduction of neuroimaging techniques in the 1960s has revolutionized the study of the biology of psychiatric disorders with implications for psychiatric practice. These comprise structural (computerized axial tomography, magnetic resonance imaging) and functional (including neurochemical/neuropharmacological techniques such as single-photon emission computerized tomography, positron emission tomography, functional magnetic resonance imaging, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy) techniques. As a result, we now have a better understanding of the morbid anatomy, pathophysiology, and chemic

BACKGROUND: Essential tremor is regarded to be a disease of the central nervous system. Neuroimaging is a rapidly growing field with potential benefits to both diagnostics and research. The exact role of imaging techniques with respect to essential tremor in research and clinical practice is not clear. A systematic review of the different imaging techniques in essential tremor is lacking in the literature.
METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search combining the terms essential tremor and familial tremor with the following keywords: imaging, mri, vbm, dwi, fmri, pet and spect, both

Human neuroimaging studies of episodic memory retrieval routinely observe the engagement of specific cortical regions beyond the medial temporal lobe. Of these, medial parietal cortex (MPC) is of particular interest given its distinct functional characteristics during different retrieval tasks. Specifically, while recognition and autobiographical recall tasks are both used to probe episodic retrieval, these paradigms consistently drive distinct spatial patterns of response within MPC. However, other studies have emphasized alternate MPC functional dissociations in terms of brain network connec

Schizophrenia is a severe psychiatric disorder associated with both structural and functional brain abnormalities. In the past few years, there has been growing interest in the application of machine learning techniques to neuroimaging data for the diagnostic and prognostic assessment of this disorder. However, the vast majority of studies published so far have used either structural or functional neuroimaging data, without accounting for the multimodal nature of the disorder. Structural MRI and resting-state functional MRI data were acquired from a total of 295 patients with schizophrenia and…

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and its tomographic extension, diffuse optical tomography (DOT), offer portable and non-invasive measures of functional brain hemodynamics with great potential for everyday neuroimaging. However, the present scarcity of publicly available DOT data hinders deep learning model generalization and hence limits the development of its full potential. In contrast, functional MRI (fMRI) provides high-resolution hemodynamic data at scale. Here, we propose a cross-modal learning framework that leverages large-scale fMRI data to enhance DOT-based neural decod

Neuroimaging techniques have had a major impact on medical science, allowing advances in the research of many neurological diseases and improving their diagnosis. In this context, multimodal neuroimaging approaches, based on the neurovascular coupling phenomenon, exploit their individual strengths to provide complementary information on the neural activity of the brain cortex. This work proposes a novel method for combining electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to explore the functional activity of the brain processes related to low-level language proce

OBJECTIVE: Transient global amnesia (TGA), an abrupt occurrence of severe anterograde episodic amnesia accompanied by repetitive questioning, has been known for more than 50 years. Despite extensive research, there is no clear evidence for the underlying pathophysiological basis of TGA. Moreover, there is no neuroimaging method to evaluate TGA in real time.
METHODS: Here we used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging recorded in 12 patients during the acute phase of TGA together with connectivity and cluster analyses to detect changes in the episodic memory network in TGA.

Chemotherapy-associated cognitive impairment (CACI) is a common long-term complication of cancer treatment that predominantly affects attention, executive function, information processing, and working memory. Although considerable progress has been made in understanding its molecular basis, the relationship between chemotherapy-induced neurobiological alterations and the functional organization of working memory remains incompletely understood. This narrative review aims to integrate current evidence on the neuroanatomical organization of working memory, the molecular mechanisms underlying CAC

Neuroimaging offers a powerful means to assess the trajectory of brain degeneration in a variety of disorders, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here we describe how multi-modal imaging can be used to study the changing brain during the different stages of AD. We integrate findings from a range of studies using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), functional MRI (fMRI) and diffusion weighted imaging (DWI). Neuroimaging reveals how risk genes for degenerative disorders affect the brain, including several recently discovered genetic variants that may disrupt br

Alzheimer's disease (AD) starts at a molecular level possibly decades earlier than could be detected by neuropsychological tests (NPTs). Neuropathological and neuroimaging data suggest that amyloid accumulation precedes the clinical onset of AD. Disease-modifying agents would have to be used early to alter the course of AD. Therefore, preclinical diagnosis is necessary. Structural and functional neuroimaging are superior for detection of the earliest stages of AD. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) techniques, including amyloid visualization, will have ther…

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second leading neurodegenerative disorder in the world. The diagnosis of idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD) is mainly through clinical presentation of motor and non-motor symptoms. Motor symptoms include tremor, bradykinesia and rigidity. Atypical parkinsonism may pose a challenge in diagnosing IPD. Functional neuroimaging can assist in diagnosing IPD and in differentiating it from atypical parkinsonism due to other neurodegenerative aetiologies.
PATIENT PRESENTATION: We present a case report of a patient with atypical parkinsonism and mild neur…

Neuroimaging has greatly improved our understanding of phobic mechanisms. To expand on these advancements, we present data on the heterogeneity of neural patterns in spider phobia combined with various psychological dimensions of spider phobia, using spider-relevant stimuli of various intensities. Specifically, we have created a database in which 49 spider-fearful individuals viewed 225 spider-relevant images in the fMRI scanner and performed behavioral avoidance tasks before and after the fMRI scan. For each participant, the database consists of the neuroimaging part, which includes an anatom

The first author is a left-handed, 51-year-old nephrologist who experienced a neurologic event. She underwent neurosurgery complicated by hemorrhage. Postoperatively, she developed persistent vertigo and unilateral tongue pain which persisted for over 5 years. Early neuroimaging revealed expected encephalomalacia but no neuroanatomical basis for her symptoms. A functional neurological disorder was suspected, and she was seen by several psychiatrists and psychotherapists. However, she suspected a neuroanatomical lesion would better explain her unrelenting symptoms. After seeing many neurologist

Neuroimaging allows in vivo visualization of neuronal structures/processes to assess their involvement in bodily functions. This is particularly valuable for the assessment of complex, multilevel neuronal controlled functions, such as urine storage and micturition. Using positron emission tomography or functional magnetic resonance imaging, significant alterations of supraspinal lower urinary tract (LUT) control have been described in patients with neurogenic LUT dysfunction due to spinal cord injury, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis. Severity of such alterations often correlates wi

Introduction Tinnitus is an abnormal perception of sound in the absence of an external stimulus. Chronic tinnitus usually has a high impact in many aspects of patients' lives, such as emotional stress, sleep disturbance, concentration difficulties, and so on. These strong reactions are usually attributed to central nervous system involvement. Neuroimaging has revealed the implication of brain structures in the auditory system. Objective This systematic review points out neuroimaging studies that contribute to identifying the structures involved in the pathophysiological mechanism of generation
