BACKGROUND: Zinc phosphide is a highly toxic rodenticide that reacts with hydrochloric acid in the stomach to form phosphine gas. Ingestion of zinc phosphide can result in consequential toxicity even when ingested in small quantities. Clear guidelines are lacking on appropriate personal protective equipment for providers to avoid additional exposure.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a four-year-old boy who suffered mild gastrointestinal symptoms after an unintentional ingestion of zinc phosphide. After discussion with the regional Poison Control Center, providers wore powered air-pur

Organophosphate poisoning (OPP) was an important reason for admission of patients to the respiratory intensive care unit (ICU) at Tygerberg Hospital, Parowvallei, CP, during the period 1979-1985; a marked increase in the number of cases was evident over the last 2 years. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 61 patients with OPP admitted to the ICU over this 7-year period. Diagnosis was based on the history, clinical manifestations of OPP, and low pseudocholinesterase levels. Suicidal ingestion was the predominant cause of OPP. Of the 61 patients, 46 (75%) were under 40 years of a

BACKGROUND: Multivariate studies of specific suicide means are relatively rare, given the logistical challenges associated with the low base rate of suicide in the general population. Thus, information on individual characteristics associated with specific suicide means remains relatively wanting. The current study provided the largest examination to date of sociodemographic characteristics associated with different means of lethality among suicide decedents, using data from a multi-state population-based surveillance system.
METHODS: Multivariate logistic regression was used with data for 20

BACKGROUND: During ship transport of organic cargo e.g. soybeans in bulk or textiles in containers, there is a risk of pests damaging the cargo during transport as well as of unwanted global spread of organisms. Consequently, fumigation of the shipped goods is recommended. While aiming to protect the cargo from being damaged by pests during the transport time, fumigation constitutes a risk to the health of seafarers and port workers and even fatal cases are seen. Phosphine gas is increasingly applied for fumigation. Based on former experiences this article aims to describe the risk and to prov

RATIONALE: Hydrogen fluoride (HF) inhalation injury is a rare but life-threatening condition that can lead to chemical pneumonitis, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and systemic fluoride poisoning. Currently, standardized treatment protocols for HF-induced ARDS are lacking and the optimal management strategy remains to be established.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A middle-aged male patient was discovered after inhaling 53% hydrogen fluoride gas and transferred to our hospital within 5 h, presenting with respiratory distress, hypoxemia and diffuse pulmonary opacities on computed tomography (CT)

Catalyst deactivation by sulfur poisoning remains a critical barrier to widespread industrial application. In this study, MnO2/Al2O3 catalyst was prepared via a simple wet impregnation and in situ redox method. The abundant surface hydroxyl groups of Al2O3 facilitate the formation of Mn-O-Al bonds, creating an intimately contacted Mn-Al interface. Experimental and theoretical calculations reveal that the MnO2/Al2O3 catalyst with an engineered interface exhibits enhanced sulfur resistance and sulfur-promoted activity for benzene oxidation compared to pure MnO2. Interface structure alters the si

Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) is a bacterium that causes serious problems in humans and animals such as food poisoning, gas gangrene and infections. C. perfringens has three sialidases (NanH, NanI, NanJ) and inhibition of NanI constitutes an approach in the treatment of C. perfringens since NanI provides the carbohydrate source necessary for the growth of bacteria. In our study, the inhibition effect of some drugs belonging to different drug groups on NanI activity was investigated. Among these drugs, orlistat (0.21±0.05 μM) was determined to have a lower IC50 value than the positiv

Clostridium perfringens is an important human and animal pathogen that is the primary causative agent of necrotizing enteritis and enterotoxemia in many types of animals; it causes traumatic gas gangrene in humans and animals and is associated with cases of food poisoning in humans. C. perfringens produces a variety of toxins as well as many enzymes, including three sialidases, NanH, NanI, and NanJ. Sialidases could be important virulence factors that promote the pathogenesis of C. perfringens. Among them, NanI promotes the colonization of C. perfringens in the intestinal tract and enhances th

Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is one of the most toxic natural gas and represents a not rare cause of fatal events in workplaces. We report here a serious accidental poisoning by hydrogen sulphide inhalation involving six sailors. Three of them died while the other three survived and were transported to the emergency room. No greenish discolouration of the body, that could be a feature of these type of deaths, was observed at autopsy. Given that blood and/or urine H2S detection does not allow to discriminate if it is related to inhalation or to putrefactive processes, the determination of thiosulpha

We report a case of fatal intoxication caused by the ingestion of the herbicide Gesapax (an emulsion type), which consists of 25% ametryn (ametryne, ametrin, ametrine, and ametrina), and 75% other components (xylene and cyclohexanone). A female in her 70's was found dead in her bed. Forensic autopsy revealed no remarkable injury or morphological changes. In a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) screening test, ametryn was qualitatively detected in her stomach content. Then, the other components of xylene and cyclohexanone were detected by headspace GC-MS in the stomach content. The am

Clostridium perfringens is a Gram-positive bacterium responsible for bacteremia, gas gangrene, and occasionally food poisoning. Its genome encodes three sialidases, nanH, nanI, and nanJ, that are involved in the removal of sialic acids from a variety of glycoconjugates and that play a role in bacterial nutrition and pathogenesis. Recent studies on trypanosomal (trans-) sialidases have suggested that catalysis in all sialidases may proceed via a covalent intermediate similar to that of other retaining glycosidases. Here we provide further evidence to support this suggestion by reporting the 0.9

Total mercury (T-Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations have been measured in the muscle tissue of 16 fish species consumed in the Mojana region of Colombia. T-Hg analysis was performed by cold-vapor atomic-absorption spectroscopy (CV-ASS) and MeHg analysis by gas chromatography with electron-capture detection. Higher T-Hg and MeHg concentrations were detected in carnivorous species (T-Hg = 0.371 +/- 0.172 (microg g(-1) fresh wt, MeHg = 0.346 +/- 0.171 microg g(-1) fresh wt) than in non-carnivorous fish (T-Hg = 0.155 +/- 0.108 microg g(-1) fresh wt, MeHg = 0.146 +/- 0.102 microg g(-1) fre

Arsenic exposure from burning coal with high arsenic contents occurs in southwest Guizhou, China. Coal in this region contains extremely high concentrations of inorganic arsenic. Arsenic exposure from coal-burning is much higher than exposure from arsenic-contaminated water in other areas of China. The current status and prevention strategies for arsenic poisoning from burning high-arsenic coal in southwest Guizhou, China, is reported here. Over 3,000 arsenic-intoxicated patients were diagnosed based on skin lesions and urinary arsenic excretion. Non-cancerous toxicities and malignancies were

Despite the reported increased use of ketamine as a recreational drug, relatively few fatalities attributed to ketamine poisoning have been documented. Two recent fatalities in which ketamine was detected are described and compared with cases previously reported in the scientific literature. Concentrations of ketamine were measured in the heart and femoral blood samples using gas chromatography with nitrogen phosphorus detection. Ketamine concentrations in a 26-year-old man whose death was attributed to ketamine intoxication were 6.9 and 1.8 mg/L in heart and femoral blood, respectively. In th

A 55-year-old male Caucasian truck driver was dead at the scene after breathing hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) produced by an accidental transfer of sodium hydrogen sulfide (NaHS) from a tanker truck to a tank containing 4% sulfuric acid (H(2)SO(4)) and iron(II) sulfate (FeSO(4)). Autopsy of the decedent's body revealed pulmonary edema and passive congestion in lungs, spleen, kidneys, and adrenal glands. Postmortem biological samples were analyzed for carbon monoxide, cyanide, ethanol, and drugs. Since a potential exposure to H(2)S was involved, blood was also analyzed for sulfide (S(2-)). The analy
