"Counteract the gaslighting" - a thematic analysis of open-ended responses about what women survivors of intimate partner sexual violence need from service providers.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner sexual violence (IPSV) is a prevalent but misunderstood form of gender-based violence with significant impacts women's health and well-being. Research suggests that IPSV has a specific context and unique impacts, but little is known about how to tailor service responses. To address this gap, we explored help-seeking experiences and needs among IPSV survivors after disclosure. METHODS: This study draws on qualitative data from a subsample of women who participated in a cross-sectional survey about the service needs of intimate partner violence survivors. Women who …

Outcomes of substance use and sexual power among adolescent girls and young women in Cape Town: Implications for structural and cultural differences.

Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in South Africa experience contextual barriers to HIV risk reduction including incomplete schooling, unintended pregnancy, substance use, and gender-based violence. A cluster randomised trial in Cape Town allocated 24 Black and Coloured communities to a gender-focused HIV risk-reduction intervention or HIV testing, with 500 AGYW total enrolled. We evaluated intervention efficacy by comparing mean differences overall, by community population group (Black and Coloured) and among those with structural barriers based on neighbourhood, education, and employme…

Risk Factors for Violent Injuries and Their Severity Among Men in The Gambia.

A matched case-control study was conducted to identify risk factors for injury from physical violence and its severity in Gambian men. Study participants were recruited from eight emergency rooms and outpatient departments in two health administrative regions. Cases were male patients aged ⩾15 years who had been violently injured. A control patient for each case, matched for the hospital or health center, date of injury, gender, and age, was selected from those injured due to nonviolence causes. In total, 447 case-control pairs were recruited. Results of the conditional logistic regression ana

Dating Violence among Undergraduate Medical Students at a Public University in Mexico City: An Exploratory Study.

Gender-based violence (GBV) and cyber-aggression are growing problems in Mexico, but there is a dearth of information on their associated risks. We aimed to determine the prevalence of dating violence (DV) and cyber-aggression in a public campus and compared students' acceptability of abusive DV based on their sex and sexual orientation. We employed a cross-sectional design to survey 964 first-year medical students attending a public university. We analyzed who found "acceptable" abusive behaviors from a dating partner and carried out descriptive analyses of sample characteristics by sex. We i…

Reproductive rights and HIV/AIDS.

Reproductive and sexual rights are at the centre of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic through culturally defined gender roles, gender-based violence and limited access to quality health care. AIDS control is one of the Millennium Goals, and the '3-by-5' initiative [antiretroviral (ARV) therapy for all in need by 2005] is far from reaching its target. Apart from the reduction in morbidity and mortality due to antiretroviral (ARV) therapy, proven effective interventions for reproductive health include consistent condom use, voluntary counselling and testing, promoting earlie…

Incarceration and exposure to internally displaced persons camps associated with reproductive rights abuses among sex workers in northern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: While female sex workers (FSWs) face a high burden of violence and criminalisation, coupled with low access to safe, non-coercive care, little is known about such experiences among FSWs in conflict-affected settings, particularly as they relate to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and rights. We explored factors associated with lifetime abortions among FSWs in northern Uganda; and separately modelled the independent effect of lifetime exposures to incarceration and living in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps on coerced and unsafe abortions. METHODS: Analyses are based on

Influences of Gender-Based Stigma on HIV Prevention and Care Among Older Women: A Scoping Review.

Older women living with HIV are uniquely situated at multiple marginalized intersections because of their gender, age, and HIV status. However, research into how gender-based stigma (GBS) affects HIV prevention and care for older women is sparse. We conducted a scoping review to explore the relationship between GBS and HIV-related psychosocial, behavioral, and well-being outcomes among older women. Our systematic search yielded 25 articles describing 22 unique studies. We identified five main themes highlighting how GBS exists at individual, interpersonal, and societal levels to adversely affe

Social Determinants of Health Associated with Intimate Partner Violence in an Urban Obstetric Population.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is pervasive and can lead to severe health consequences. In the United States, 25% of women have experienced sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner. However, less is known about the frequency and risk factors for IPV in the obstetric population.Nested case-control study from a prospective cohort study of 606 parturients at a single academic medical center from 2011 to 2022. Structured questionnaires were administered to randomly chosen, consented patients during their postpartum hospital stay to gather information on social de

Sexual exploitation of children: Barriers for boys in accessing social supports for victimization.

BACKGROUND: The global evidence regarding sexual exploitation of children (SEC) is expanding, however, the majority of research continues to focus on girls. ECPAT International's Global Boys Initiative is a major contribution to broadening knowledge by exploring how sexual exploitation impacts boys specifically. OBJECTIVE: This discussion paper explores data from the initiative to better understand how boys and children of all genders may be impacted by sexual exploitation. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: During 2019-21, research was undertaken by ECPAT member organizations into the sexual exploit

Sex/Gender Differences in the Associations Between Traumatic Experiences and Mental Health Problems Among Adults Experiencing Homelessness.

Adults experiencing homelessness are disproportionately affected by mental health problems and the risk factors for them (i.e., adverse childhood experiences [ACEs], intimate partner violence [IPV], and cumulative trauma). However, little is known about whether there are sex/gender differences in the associations between ACEs, IPV, and cumulative trauma with mental health problems among this population. This study examined whether sex/gender moderated the association between (a) 10 widely studied ACEs or IPV or (b) cumulative trauma (i.e., cumulative ACEs, or cumulative ACEs and IPV) with ment

Intersections of Sex Work, Mental Ill-Health, IPV and Other Violence Experienced by Female Sex Workers: Findings from a Cross-Sectional Community-Centric National Study in South Africa.

Female sex workers (FSWs) are at increased risk of mental health problems, including mood disorders and substance abuse, and we need to unde … experiencing SW stigma. All paths from childhood trauma had final common pathways from exposure to gender-based violence (non-partner rape or intimate partner violence) to mental ill-health, except for one that was mediated by food insecurity. Thus, FSWs' poor mental health risk was often mediated by their work location and vulnerability to violence, substance abuse a …

Gender differences in the PTSD symptoms of polytraumatized youth during isolated phases of trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Gender differences in the development and severity of PTSD have long been observed, but much less is known about gender differences within the context of trauma-focused treatment. This study investigated gender differences in the PTSD symptoms of polytraumatized youth during Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). METHOD: The sample included child welfare-involved youth ages 7-18 (N = 138) who experienced a mean of 4.78 types of trauma and received TF-CBT at a trauma treatment clinic. Mixed ANOVA analyses assessed gender differences in PTSD symptoms from baseline to t

Interrupted gender transitions: underlying motivations as correlates of psychosocial risks.

BACKGROUND: Previous research on what is often termed "detransitioning" experiences among transgender and nonbinary individuals has frequently lacked conceptual clarity, failed to differentiate interrupted gender transition experiences by underlying motivations, and failed to examine correlations with psychosocial risks by the various motivations. AIMS: Utilizing a proposed conceptual framework that captures motivational differences between various interrupted gender transition experiences, this examination seeks to provide a more nuanced understanding of these interrupted gender transitions

[Racial and gender inequalities in health in Latin America: historical plots and daily challenges of Black women].

This study analyzes the social and health inequalities that affect Latin American women, situating Black women in the historical and structural bases of the coloniality of power, knowledge, and being. It aims to problematize how racism, sexism, and patriarchy - legacies of colonial modernity - shape the intersectional determination of health inequities sustained by political, economic, and symbolic systems that naturalize the subordination of racialized bodies. This theoretical-analytical essay articulates the critical literature based on decolonial and intersectional references and analyzes d

A Scoping Review of IPV Prevention Curricula and Their Implementation in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Implications for the Next Generation of Programs.

Curriculum-based programs are one of the most common and effective strategies for preventing intimate partner violence (IPV) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Yet relatively little is known about how curricula and their implementation compare across programs, limiting learning and innovation. This scoping review examined the design, content, and implementation of 55 curricula from 42 programs implemented in 23 LMICs between 2001 and 2024. Curricula were identified through screening systematic reviews, grey literature, donor reports, and professional contacts. Data on program charact

Socio-cultural challenges and mental health needs of female sex workers in Bangladesh: a call for culturally sensitive interventions.

Female sex workers (FSW) in Bangladesh face multifaceted socio-cultural, legal, and economic challenges that significantly impact their mental health and well-being. With an estimated population of 200,000, FSW enter the profession primarily due to poverty, trafficking, forced marriage, and gender-based violence. The legal status of sex work remains ambiguous, exposing FSW to exploitation, violence, and limited access to justice. Stigma rooted in religious and cultural beliefs leads to exclusion from community and religious life, while children of FSW face social rejection and educational barr…

Prevalence and factors associated with intimate partner violence experiences among young married women in Nigeria: a cross-sectional study.

In Nigeria, where early marriage and entrenched gender norms persist, evidence on intimate partner violence (IPV) among young married women remains limited and often narrowly focused on age-related risk. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of IPV and factors associated with IPV experiences among young married women in selected states in Nigeria. This household cross-sectional study was conducted among 872 young married women aged 15-24 years in Niger, Ondo, and Oyo States using an interviewer-administered questionnaire. IPV was defined as any experience of emotional, physical, or sexual

Examining the profile of couples attending a violence prevention intervention: A dyadic latent profile analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Existing research points to how increasing male engagement in public health interventions without addressing gender inequities can perpetuate power imbalances in a relationship which may lead to increased stress and anxiety for women. The aim of this study was to identify profiles of couples who attended a violence prevention intervention based on their attitudes toward gender norms and power sharing within a couple, determine if these profiles have different women's mental health outcome and examine whether male engagement moderates this relationship. METHODS: Using data from a cl
