Coastal streams and sewage outfalls: Hot spots of mercury discharge, pollution and cycling in nearshore environments.

The coastal streams (CSs) and sewage outfalls (SOs) are widely distributed and direct anthropogenic stress on global coastal ecosystems. However, the CS/SO-associated mercury (Hg) discharge, pollution and cycle in nearshore environment are less quantified. Here, we report that total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MMHg) concentrations in waters of CSs (n = 8) and SOs (n = 15) of the northern China were ∼102 to 103 times of coastal surface waters and 10 to 102 times of major rivers in China and other regions. The CS/SO discharges resulted in the increase of total organic carbon (TOC) contents, THg

Seasonal and spatial variations in microplastics abundances in St. Andrew Bay, Florida.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) cause approximately 25 % of microplastics (MPs) in the marine environment. While research on MPs in WWTP effluent has demonstrated that an abundance of particles enter the marine environment, little effort has gone to assessing MP abundances in coastal sediments to determine their seasonal and spatial variability. Here, we assessed MP abundances in sediments at sites of WWTP outflow and at non-polluted sites over six consecutive seasons within the St. Andrew Bay system in Northwestern Florida. We showed that MP abundances were highest at one of the WWTP site

Importance of hydraulic residence time for methylmercury accumulation in sediment and fish from artificial reservoirs.

Excessive methylmercury (MeHg) accumulation in dietary fish is a global concern due to its harmful effects on human health, however, environmental factors affecting MeHg accumulation in reservoir ecosystems are not clearly known. In this study, we aim to identify the main sources of MeHg in the water column and the critical factors related to MeHg concentration and methylation rate constant (km) in sediment and total Hg concentration in fish using five-year (2016-2020) monitoring data of the five artificial reservoirs. The preliminary mass budgets constructed using the measurement and online d

Evaluating the influence of seasonal stratification on mercury methylation rates in the water column and sediment in a contaminated section of a western U.S.A. reservoir.

Mercury methylation frequently occurs at the active oxic/anoxic boundary between the sediment bed and water column of lakes and reservoirs. Previous studies suggest that the predominant mercury methylation zone moves to the water column during periods of stratification and that high potential methylation rates (Km) in sediment require oxygenated overlying water. However, simultaneous measurements of methylmercury (MeHg) production in both the sediment and water column remain limited. Understanding the relative importance of sediment versus water column methylation and the impact of seasonal st

Mercury and other trace elements distribution and profiling of microbial community in the surface sediments of East Siberian Sea.

In this study, total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg), various trace elements, and microbial communities were measured in surface sediments of the East Siberian Sea (ESS). The results showed that the average values of THg and MeHg were 58.8 ± 15.21 μg/kg and 0.50 ± 0.22 μg/kg, respectively. The notable levels of trace elements present in both surface sediment and porewater were Al, Fe, and Mn. The enrichment factor and geoaccumulation index analyses found that both natural phenomena and anthropogenic activities contributed to elevated concentrations of metals in the ESS. The redox proxy met

Field study on short-term changes in benthic environment and benthic microbial communities using pyrolyzed oyster shells.

To evaluate the effect of pyrolyzed crushed oyster shells (PCOS) on the remediation of sediments and microbial diversity, a field study was conducted in Buksin Bay, Tongyeong City, Republic of Korea. It was observed that after treatment with PCOS, the concentration of H2S in the sediment of the control site was 287 mg/L. Furthermore, it decreased up to 0 mg/L and remained so until the end of the field study, that is for a period of six months. Moreover, the concentrations of NO2-N + NO3-N, NH4-N, and PO4-P decreased sharply, and the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) increased after PCOS trea

Iron rich glauconite sand as an efficient phosphate immobilising agent in river sediments.

The reductive dissolution of iron (Fe) (oxy)hydroxides in sediments releases phosphorus (P) to the overlying water and may lead to eutrophication. Glauconite sands (GS) are rich in Fe and may be used as readily available P sorbents. This study was set up to test effects of dose and type of GS on the P immobilisation in sediments under hypoxic conditions. Three different GS were amended to a P-rich river sediment at doses of 0% (control), 5% and 10% (weight fractions) and incubated with overlying water in batch laboratory conditions. Glutamate was added to the solution after 15 days to deplete

Acid volatile sulfides and simultaneously extracted metals: A new miniaturized 'purge and trap' system for laboratory and field measurements.

In natural environments, Acid Volatile Sulfides (AVS) contained in anoxic waters or sediments, are composed of dissolved sulfides and neo-formed sulfides colloids or particles. Under acidic addition, AVS emit hydrogen sulfide gas and release the so-called simultaneously extracted metals (SEM). The measurement of AVS coupled with that of the SEM enables to evaluate the metal trapping capacity of sulfides in the environment. Because AVS are extremely reactive to oxidation, the most accurate methodology to quantify AVS and SEM requires to be able to process the samples extraction on-site, directl

An integrated approach to characterize deep sediment toxicity in Genoa submarine canyons (NW Mediterranean).

The aim of this study was to evaluate deep sediment toxicity in Genoa submarine canyons (Northwestern Mediterranean), for the first time, by using an integrated approach that combined chemistry and ecotoxicology. Sediments were collected from the main submarine canyons in the Gulf of Genoa (Polcevera and Bisagno) and along the adjacent Western Open Slope. A multi-endpoint ecotoxicological approach was taken by exposing two crustacean larvae (Amphibalanus amphitrite and Artemia sp.). Lethal and sub-lethal responses (mortality, swimming behavior) were investigated. Chemical analysis showed that

Distribution of antibiotics in lake water-groundwater - Sediment system in Chenhu Lake area.

Antibiotics pollution in lakes has been widely reported worldwide, however rare studies were concerned about antibiotics distribution in lake water - groundwater - sediment system. Here, a total of 22 antibiotics and 4 sulfonamides metabolites were detected in lake water, sediments, and different depth of groundwater surrounding Chenhu Lake during the wet and dry seasons. N4-acetylsulfonamides (Ac-SAs), fluoroquinolones (FQs), and tetracyclines (TCs) were the main groups of antibiotics in the study area. In the whole lake environment, there were more types of antibiotics in the aquatic environ

Spatial and temporal distribution of toxic compounds in sediments and potential ecological effects on macrobenthic faunal species in Hangzhou Bay from 2003 to 2015.

The development of toxic compounds in sediment and macrobenthos species in Hangzhou bay (2003-2015) was evaluated. Concentrations were compared to Chinese sediment quality guidelines (CN-SQG) and risk assessed by the ecological risk index (ERI) and t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbour Embedding (t-SNE). To study seafood contamination, sediment and swimming crabs were collected. Chromium, copper, and arsenic exceeded CN-SQG. Organic contaminants did not exceed CN-SQG; however, t-SNE revealed a negative relationship with benthic species numbers. Since 2003, half of the benthic species have disappe

Risk assessment concerning the heavy metals in sediment around Taihu Lake, China.

The present study sought to determine the systematic pollution status of the heavy metals (HMs) found in the sediment around Taihu Lake, China. The concentrations and speciations of the HMs in the sediment were measured. The Ni and Cr concentrations exceeded the probable effect level (PEL), while the concentrations of the other HMs (except Hg) were between the threshold effect level and the PEL. The enrichment factor values for all HMs indicated slight enrichment. The geoaccumulation index revealed that the HMs represented light pollution, while the average contaminant factor value of the HMs

Evidence for Microbial Community Effect on Sediment Equilibrium Phosphorus Concentration (EPC0).

Batch equilibrium phosphorus concentration (EPC0) methods were applied to determine phosphorus capacity of sediments from three agriculturally influenced tributaries in southern Ontario - Belle River, Big Creek, and Nissouri Creek. Aliquots of sediments were amended with soluble reactive phosphorus and incubated at four temperatures (5, 15, 25, and 35°C). Batches of sediments from each location and temperature were also subjected to a treatment; gamma (γ)-irradiated at 28 kGy over 24-h (sterilized) and compared to non-sterilized biotic samples. Treatment showed a significant effect on EPC0 in

Effect of ferric chloride on phosphorus immobilization and speciation in Dianchi Lake sediments.

Immobilization of phosphorus in lake sediments and control of internal-loading phosphorus release have become crucial aspects of eutrophication lake management. In this study, the immobilization efficiency of phosphorus by ferric chloride in Dianchi Lake sediments was investigated. In addition, effects of the dosage of ferric chloride and contact time on the release of phosphorus from sediments were investigated. Laboratory experiments revealed that ferric chloride can effectively inhibit the release of phosphorus from sediments. At a ferric chloride dosage of 10 mg/g, the total phosphorus con

Preparation of the Lanthanum-Aluminum-Amended Attapulgite Composite as a Novel Inactivation Material to Immobilize Phosphorus in Lake Sediment.

In this study, a green solvent-free drying production method was used to prepare an attapulgite clay/lanthanum and aluminum (ACLA) composite as a novel phosphorus (P) sorbent to immobilize P in lake sediment. The prepared sorbent contained around 5% La and 2% Al. The maximum P sorption capacity of ACLA can reach as high as 34.6 mg P/g and is higher than most clay-based P sorbents. The addition of ACLA into sediment can effectively reduce sediment mobile P and simultaneously induce elevated inert P forms of HCl-P and NaOH-rP, which also can increase the stability of P in sediment. Long-term sed

Mercury and its form in a dammed reservoir ecosystem during the charging phase.

Throughout continents, reservoirs tend to have elevated methylmercury (MeHg) concentration transformed from mercury (Hg/total Hg). This impact may be pronounced in the reservoir with less velocity of water during the charging period resulted in the deposition of sediments. In sediments on favorable conditions, methylation may be enhanced by the decomposition of flood organic material, which can release Hg and enhance microbial activity. However, much less is known about the transfer ratio of Hg and its form MeHg from sediment to biota in the hydrological reservoir during the dam charging phase

Effects of mercury, organic carbon, and microbial inhibition on methylmercury cycling at the profundal sediment-water interface of a sulfate-rich hypereutrophic reservoir.

Methylmercury (MeHg) produced by anaerobic bacteria in lakes and reservoirs, poses a threat to ecosystem and human health due to its ability to bioaccumulate in aquatic food webs. This study used 48-hr microcosm incubations of profundal sediment and bottom water from a sulfate-rich, hypereutrophic reservoir to assess seasonal patterns of MeHg cycling under various treatments. Treatments included addition of air, Hg(II), organic carbon, and microbial inhibitors. Both aeration and sodium molybdate, a sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) inhibitor, generally decreased MeHg concentration in microcosm w

Microbial communities are sensitive indicators for freshwater sediment copper contamination.

Anthropogenic activities, such as mining and agriculture, have resulted in many freshwater systems having elevated concentrations of copper. Despite the prevalence of this contamination, and the vital ecological function of prokaryotes, just three studies have investigated prokaryote community responses to copper concentration in freshwater sediments. To address this, the current study investigated these communities in outdoor mesocosms spiked with varying copper concentrations. We profiled the prokaryotic communities at the taxonomic level, using next-generation high-throughput sequencing tec
