Cleidocranial dysplasia is associated with the formation of many supernumerary teeth which usually fail to erupt. In later life, cysts may form around the embedded teeth. The following report describes the management of such a case with a method which promotes satisfactory prosthodontic rehabilitation.

The relationship between self-reported medication use (exposure to one or more drugs with anticipated gingival effect--antidepressants, diuretics, antihypertensives, hormones) and four measures of gingival conditions (plaque index, gingival index, calculus index, maximum CPITN score) was examined among 594 patients in 35 dental practices in two North Carolina counties. Idiopathic myelofibrosis is a myeloproliferative disorder of unknown origin. The bone marrow becomes fibrotic with an associated decrease in hematopoiesis resulting in anemia, bleeding problems, splenomegaly, and other secondary abnormalities. Epidermolysis bullosa presents a wide range of clinical symptoms. In this case, a patient had recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa that required dental treatment. Standard protocol modifications and medical considerations were required in preparation for general anesthesia. Postoperative follow-up, including monitoring the relationship of the patient's disease state to dental health, is recommended.

Intraoral Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a lesion seen commonly in patients with AIDS. These lesions can interfere with both speech and mastication. The dental team should be aware of the various treatment modalities for KS and the complications associated with these treatments. Oral mucositis associated with head and neck radiotherapy can substantially hinder completion of cancer therapy. Alleviation of this often severe stomatitis can provide enhanced patient comfort and facilitate appropriate care. Dental patients with severe and profound mental impairments may engage in behaviors that adversely affect their oral health. Based on experience in a residential care facility, this report sensitizes dental practitioners, who are unfamiliar with the problems of these patients, to consequences of these behaviors.

There is controversy regarding the safe use of local anesthetics in patients who are susceptible to malignant hyperthermia undergoing dental treatment. This article reviews the literature for reports of malignant hyperthermia reactions under local and general anesthesia, and suggests a protocol for the management of these patients in the dental office.
