Background Tuberculosis is a chronic granulomatous disease and an enormous health problem. Oral lesions are relatively uncommon, however, pulmonary tuberculosis may manifest with the involvement of the gingiva as the only primary finding.Case description The present case study reports tuberculosis of the gingiva manifesting as gingival enlargement. The diagnosis was based on sputum examination, histopathology and immunologic investigations. Anti-tubercular therapy was carried out with remarkable changes in gingival health within four months.Clinical implications and conclusion Gingival tubercu

Idiopathic gingival enlargement is a proliferative fibrous lesion of the gingival tissue that causes esthetic and functional problems. Both genetically and pharmacologically induced forms of gingival enlargement exist. This case report addresses the diagnosis and treatment of a case of idiopathic gingival enlargement in a 13-year-old female. The patient presented with generalized diffuse gingival enlargement involving the maxillary and mandibular arches extending on buccal and lingual/palatal surfaces and covering incisal / occlusal third of the tooth resulting in difficulty in speech and mast

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a rare finding in the adolescent population, with most cases occurring in patients with underlying heritable diseases or immunologic conditions. Moreover, the incidence of oral SCC in this age group is extremely low. While isolated cases of adolescent oral SCC have been documented, most have been primary tongue or lip lesions. We report 4 cases of gingival SCC occurring in otherwise healthy adolescent patients. The preliminary clinical impressions ranged from factitial injury to inflammatory tissue. Microscopic similarities, including overlap with pseudoepithel

BACKGROUND: Clinical and radiographic measures are gold standards for diagnosing periodontitis but offer little information regarding the pathogenesis of the disease. We hypothesized that a comparison of gene expression signatures between healthy and diseased gingival tissues would provide novel insights in the pathobiology of periodontitis and would inform the design of future studies.
METHODS: Ninety systemically healthy non-smokers with moderate to advanced periodontitis (63 with chronic periodontitis and 27 with aggressive periodontitis) each contributed at least two diseased interproxima

The pigmentation is the physiological or pathological accumulation of a pigment in a tissue. Physiological pigmentation in gingiva which is a part of masticatory mucous membranes depends on the activity of the melanocytes. These non keratinocytic cells include the melanosoma where an endogenous pigment, the melanin, is synthesized. Quantitative or qualitative disruption of mucous pigmentation leads to the apparition of pigmented lesions. When melanocytes are directly concerned, the lesions can be of intrinsic origin, such as oral mucosa melanoma, the nevus, pigmented oral lichen planus etc. Pi

A 48-year-old woman presented with rapid onset hypertrophy of both the upper and lower gingiva. A detailed history and a diet nearly void of fruits and vegetables raised the suspicion of a possible deficiency of vitamin C. An estimation of the serum ascorbic acid level confirmed our suspicions (<0.12 mg/dL; normal range, 0.4-1.0 mg/dL) and a diagnosis of scurvy was confirmed. A course of 1000 mg/d of ascorbic acid was initiated that caused a dramatic resolution of the gingival lesions. Gingival hypertrophy has a large differential diagnosis; however, it is also known to be an extremely rare ma

Idiopathic or hereditary gingival fibromatosis is a benign oral disorder characterized by enlargement of the oral gingival tissues. This article describes a case of a female child who exhibited a generalized gingival overgrowth in both arches at birth. Other causes of gingival overgrowth and the clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic characteristics are discussed. Treatment consisted of surgical removal of the hyperplastic fibrous tissue in a series of gingivectomies. Medical history, clinical examination, and histopathologic and genetic findings were essential to rule out other systemic

Generalized gingival enlargement can be caused by a variety of etiological factors. It can be inherited (hereditary gingival fibromatosis [HGF]); associated with other diseases characterizing a syndrome; or induced as a side effect of systemic drugs, such as phenytoin, cyclosporin, or nifedipine. HGF, previously known as elephantiasis gingivae, hereditary gingival hyperplasia, and hypertrophic gingiva, is a genetic disorder characterized by a progressive enlargement of the gingiva. This review will focus on diagnosis, treatment, and control of HGF. The pattern of inheritance, the histopatholog

BACKGROUND: The metastasis of oral cavity is rare. We report a gingival metastasis in the course of low grade phyllode sarcoma of the breast which is usually little metastatic.
CASE-REPORT: A 44 year old woman was operated two years ago for a phyllod sarcoma of the breast histologically confirmed. She presented for a mandibular exophytic tumour associated with haemorrhagic, necrotic, ulcerated and bulking gingivitis surrounding at the level of the maxillary and mandibular gingiva. The examination revealed multiple nodular lesions of the trunk and the scalp. The histological examination confir…

BACKGROUND: A relationship between occlusal forces and gingival recession has been postulated in the past. However, minimal data are available to demonstrate a causal relationship between occlusal forces and recession.
METHODS: The records from a private practice limited to periodontics were reviewed to find patients who had complete periodontal examination records, including occlusal analysis and gingival width, that were recorded at least 1 year apart. Patients who fit this criteria were divided into those who had none of the recommended treatment (untreated, n = 30), those who had only non

This study was conducted to determine the occurrence, severity, and risk factors of gingival enlargement in children treated with valproate and other nonvalproate antiepileptic drugs. A cross-sectional study was carried out in which data obtained from 68 epileptic children under treatment were compared with those from 50 controls. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data on patients' demographics, dental and oral hygiene practices, and medication history. Gingival enlargement, gingival index, plaque index, and probing depth were measured to assess periodontal health. The chi-square

Lichen planus is a dermatologic disease that affects both skin and mucosa. Here we report five cases of lichen planus that presented as the oral component of the vulvovaginal-gingival syndrome. Four of the cases were associated with biopsy-proven oral lichen planus, and all five patients had oral lesions that clinically resembled lichen planus. Three patients were taking medications that are associated with lichenoid drug reactions; four patients were postmenopausal; and all five patients had desquamative vulvovaginitis. Clinicians may see these patients when they show persistent signs and sym

Clinical observation of our patients forms the basis of the dental examination, along with other more complex diagnostic tests. In this case, the gingival bleeding episode of one patient was initially diagnosed and treated as an acute periodontal episode. When simple therapy failed to resolve the bleeding, a full haematological investigation was ordered. This revealed the presence of a life-threatening disease. The patient was immediately referred for medical management of acute myeloblastic leukaemia, but died some months later. Dentists should always be on guard to observe any unusual clinic

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Hereditary gingival fibromatosis is characterized by various degrees of attached gingival overgrowth. It usually develops as an isolated disorder but can be one feature of a syndrome. A case of a 38-year-old female is reported who presented a generalized severe gingival overgrowth, involving the maxillary and mandibular arches and covering almost all teeth. The clinical differential diagnosis included drug-induced overgrowth as well as idiopathic gingival fibromatosis.
TREATMENT: Excess gingival tissue was removed by conventional gingivectomy. As the gingival enlargement was

Periodontal plastic surgical techniques to obtain root coverage traditionally have utilized autogenous soft tissue grafts. Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) increasingly is being used as an alternative to soft tissue grafting in attempting root coverage. Resorbable membranes in GTR therapy prevent the need for a second surgery to harvest donor tissue. GTR membranes composed of collagen are effective barriers that add to the thickness of the overlying gingiva and possess platelet-aggregating properties that may help in early wound healing. The cases presented here demonstrate the treatment of gi

BACKGROUND: Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is a rare, chronic, intraepithelial bullous disease with a potentially fatal outcome. Oral lesions are a hallmark of PV and occur in almost all cases, and represent the preliminary symptom in more than half of the patients. Gingival lesions are very common and, when solitary, often first recognized by periodontist.
METHOD: In the literature, gingival localization of PV are usually described as desquamative gingivitis (DG) and/or as vesiculobullous lesions of the free and attached gingiva; in our experience, early lesions only rarely appears as extensive ery…

Amalgam tattoos occur when small particles of dental amalgam, composed largely of silver (Ag) and mercury (Hg), are inadvertently implanted into oral soft tissues during dental procedures. Metallothioneins (MTs) are ubiquitous, low molecular weight, cysteine-rich, metal-binding proteins that are inducible by many agents including metals and may be involved in the detoxification of toxic metals such as Hg. In this study, the correlation between MT expression and amalgam tattoos in human gingiva was investigated using energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX) and immunohistochemical techniques

Surgical treatment of gingival recession defects aims at obtaining soft tissue coverage of exposed root surfaces and/or augmentation of gingival tissue dimensions. A variety of protocols have been developed to manage these clinical problems. Since one goal of periodontal therapy is the regeneration of the lost attachment apparatus of the tooth, full restoration of defect should be accomplished following mucogingival procedures. This implies regeneration of all periodontal structures, including formation of new cementum with inserting connective tissue fibers, alveolar bone regeneration and rec
