Global athlete mental health screening: cross-cultural validity of the athlete psychological strain questionnaire.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health screening is important across sports cultures, yet recommended tools primarily exist in English. Several translations of the Sport Mental Health Assessment Tool-1 have been published and supported by validation studies; however, it is the Athlete Psychological Strain Questionnaire (APSQ) score that determines whether athletes should continue with the screening process. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the validity of the Romanian APSQ within a representative population and examined the associations between the APSQ score and a range of well-being measures. METH

Viral pathogens in urban rats: A one health systematic review of global surveillance evidence.

BACKGROUND: Commensal rats (Rattus norvegicus and Rattus rattus) thrive in urban environments worldwide, where they live near humans and may act as reservoirs for viral pathogens of public health relevance. Although rats are increasingly recognised as sentinels of urban environmental health, the diversity and distribution of viral infections circulating in urban rat populations remain incompletely characterised within a One Health framework. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review synthesises global evidence on viral pathogens detected in urban rats, focusing on rat hepatitis E virus/Rocahepevirus

Macroeconomic shock-response functions of health system resilience and equity: a global simulation study.

To quantify how macroeconomic shocks propagate into health system resilience and equity, we develop a globally comparable stress-testing framework isolating within-country responses to standardised shocks. Using a panel of 205 countries (2000-2022; 3,009 observations) with harmonised World Bank data, we construct three indices: Economic Shock, Health System Resilience and Health Equity. Symmetric ±5%, ±10% and ±20% shocks generate counterfactual scenarios, with responses estimated via simulation and validated using linear elasticity, Random Forest and XGBoost. Macroeconomic shocks produce pred

AI-driven health misinformation in Somalia's digital era: A neglected crisis demanding global action.

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) and generative technologies is transforming global health communication, but it is also accelerating the spread of health misinformation, particularly in fragile and low-resource settings. Somalia, characterized by limited digital health literacy, weak regulatory frameworks, and increasing reliance on social media for health information, represents a highly vulnerable context for AI-driven infodemics. This Letter to the Editor examines the emerging threat of AI-generated health misinformation in Somalia's digital landscape, highlighting its p…

"GLP-1 Agonists vs. Bariatric Surgery: A Global Health Network Analysis of Panniculectomy Outcomes".

BACKGROUND: With the rise in medically assisted weight loss, procedures like panniculectomy are increasingly common. The surgical impact of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists remains unclear, particularly compared to bariatric surgery. OBJECTIVES: To compare panniculectomy outcomes and perioperative lab values in patients with prior GLP-1 use versus bariatric surgery. METHODS: TriNetX Global Research Network was queried to identify patients who underwent panniculectomy following either GLP-1 use or bariatric surgery. Cohorts were formed using codes such as CPT and ICD-10 and p

Psychedelic- and Substance-Assisted Therapies in Global Mental Health: Bridging Cultures, Evidence, and Access.

Psychedelic- and substance-assisted therapies, including MDMA, psilocybin, and ketamine, are gaining attention for conditions such as PTSD and depression, yet their development and implementation remain largely concentrated in high-income settings. This graphical abstract summarizes the central argument of the commentary: while these interventions may hold relevance for global mental health, particularly in conflict-affected and humanitarian contexts, their equitable use is constrained by cultural, ethical, regulatory, and resource-related challenges. Responsible implementation requires cultur

The complexity of inequity: rethinking global health through lived experience, power, and structural vulnerability.

Global health’s persistent inequities reflect not just gaps in resources or care, but the operation of complex, multi-level systems that inscribe power, vulnerability, and embodied experience. Prevailing frameworks remain too narrow, neglecting how health emerges from intersecting histories, adaptive institutions, and the lived experience of marginalized populations. This perspective advances a complexity-informed rethinking of inequity, integrating insights from structural vulnerability, epistemic justice, intersectionality, and the capability approach to illuminate how reductionist solutions…

Global Assessment of Health Utilities Associated with Pneumococcal Disease in Children-Targeted Literature Reviews.

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal disease can significantly impact the quality of life (QoL) of children. Health utilities are used to measure the disease burden and calculate quality-adjusted life year (QALY) estimates. These estimates provide critical inputs in economic evaluations of pneumococcal vaccines in children. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to synthesize utility values used in cost-utility analyses (CUAs) of pediatric pneumococcal vaccines and to summarize published utility studies on pneumococcal disease and post-meningitis sequelae (PMS) in children on a global scale. METHODS: Two targeted

Bickerstaff encephalitis: a comprehensive narrative review of pathophysiology, clinical features, and global health considerations.

INTRODUCTION: Bickerstaff brainstem encephalitis (BBE) is a rare autoimmune neurological disorder first identified in 1951. It shares clinical and immunological features with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and Miller-Fisher syndrome (MFS). BBE, characterized by brainstem dysfunction, often after infection or vaccination, is characterized by immunopathogenesis involving microbial antigens and neural gangliosides, with anti-GQ1b IgG antibodies as key biomarkers. METHODS: A comprehensive narrative review was conducted by searching PubMed, Cochrane, Global Health Library, and Google Scholar for re…

Global Epidemiology and health risks of Bacillus cereus Infections: Special focus on infant foods.

Bacillus cereus is a common pathogen responsible for gastrointestinal and other complicated disorders, yet epidemiological data and public health measures remain scarce. To bridge these gaps, a bilingual search spaning 50 years identified 266 relevant studies on global B. cereus infection, encompassing 6,135 cases. The global mortality rate for B. cereus infection is 0.9 %. Food poisoning cases account for 94.31 % (5786/6135) of the total infections, with a mortality rate of 0.05 %. B. cereus infections were primarily reported in East Asia, Europe, and North America, with frequent studies in e

Global health systems strengthening: FIGO's strategic view on reducing maternal and newborn mortality worldwide.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate that successful health systems strengthening (HSS) projects have addressed disparities and inequities in maternal and perinatal care in low-income countries. METHODS: A comprehensive literature review covered the period between 1980 and 2022, focusing on successful HSS interventions within health systems' seven core components that improved maternal and perinatal care. RESULTS: The findings highlight the importance of integrating quality interventions into robust health systems, as this has been shown to reduce maternal and newborn mortality. However, several challe

Interview study exploring how global health partnership principles are enacted and recommendations for practice.

BACKGROUND: Effective global health partnerships can strengthen and improve health and healthcare systems across the world; however, establishing and maintaining effective partnerships can be challenging. Principles of Partnerships have been developed to improve the quality and effectiveness of health partnerships. It is unclear how principles are enacted in practice, and current research has not always included the voices of low-income and middle-income country partners. This study aimed to explore how The Tropical Health and Education Trust's nine Principles of Partnership are enacted in pra…

Depression risk in chronic tonsillitis patients underwent tonsillectomy: a global federated health network analysis.

Background: Tonsillectomy is a common surgery in the US, with possible postoperative complications. While small studies indicate postoperative depressive symptoms may occur, large-scale evidence is lacking on the tonsillectomy-depression link. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX US collaborative network, offering de-identified electronic health data from 59 collaborative healthcare organizations (HCOs) in the United States. In this study, people being diagnosed of chronic tonsillitis between January 2005 and December 2017 were enrolled. Patients deceased, with

Spatial Dynamics of Chickenpox Outbreaks in Rapidly Developing Regions: Implications for Global Public Health.

OBJECTIVE: The occurrence of chickenpox in rapidly developing areas poses substantial seasonal risk to children. However, certain factors influencing local chickenpox outbreaks have not been studied. Here, we examined the relationship between spatial clustering, heterogeneity of chickenpox outbreaks, and socioeconomic factors in Southern China. METHODS: We assessed chickenpox outbreak data from Southern China between 2006 and 2021, comprising both relatively fast-growing parts and slower sub-regions, and provides a representative sample of many developing regions. We analyzed the spatial clus

From 'making up' professionals to epistemic colonialism: Digital health platforms in the Global South.

Platforms have been studied in terms of their impact on knowledge production and generation of social value. Little however is known about the significance of the knowledge they transfer to the recipient communities-often in faraway countries of the Global South-or its potential perceived colonizing effects. Our study explores the question around digital epistemic colonialism in the context of health platforms involved in knowledge transfer. Using a Foucauldian lens, we study digital colonialism as a phenomenon that emerges from platforms' underpinning power/knowledge relations. Drawing upon a

Low self-reported penicillin allergy in South Africa-implications for global public health response.

OBJECTIVES: In high-income countries, up to 25% of inpatients have a self-reported penicillin allergy (PA). After testing, 95% of these self-reported PAs are incorrect. These incorrectly labelled PAs increase the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, and drive bacterial resistance. The epidemiology of PA in low- and middle-income countries is unknown. We aimed to describe the epidemiology and delabelling outcomes of self-reported PA in South African (SA) inpatients. METHODS: We conducted point prevalence surveys between April 2019 and June 2021 at seven hospitals in Cape Town, South Africa. A te
